[LPC] Grief Bringers Captain & Command Squad

Rogue Trader

Recommended Posts

For the Librarium painting challenge, I've set myself the target of painting up an HQ unit to accompany my two tactical squads and dreadnought (previously seen here) and thus give me a painted playable (if somewhat bare bones) army.

The challenge miniatures consist of a captain plus his command squad, consisting of apothecary, standard bearer, company champion and two veterans. I've gone for a static command squad, since my troops tend to be dynamically posed, and I thought it would be a challenge to find interesting static poses. Each of my squads has a theme or a role in the battle, and the command squad are standing, surveying the battlefield.

First up is the Captain:

I've since added a bionic eye and altered the left arm slightly.

Company Champion:

Apothecary:

Veteran 1 (communications):

Veteran 2 (scanning):

Right hand needs fixing so it holds the scanner better.

The standard bearer is also built, but I'd undercoated him in black before I remembered I needed to take pics :P

There's not likely to be much progress over the next few days as I'm starting a run of night shifts, but if I do get any time next thing on the list is bases for these guys. I use a swamp basing scheme, which takes some time to make, but is worth the effort, I think:

Comments, criticisms and witticisms welcome, as always, and I'm relying on you guys to hassle me enough to actually complete the challenge! :)

Actually I think I might recognize the scanner mabob. Is it possible we have a Tau boy here? In otherwords its the Tau Tank Commander bitz that you get when you buy any of the tanks I tink. Then again I have a Hammerhead so that explains it.

  • 3 weeks later...

really really like the basing. been mulling over ideas for bases on my 2 new armies (brettonians and marine renegades), would love to try something like this for one of them... any chance of either a link to the tutorial you used, or a wee tutorial from yourself?

edit: if not a tutorial, just a run down on the colours for the mud, as it's the first realistic mud i've seen.

Thanks for the kind comments :)

I'm hoping to be able provide the second WIP update later today, but meantime, I'll just answer a couple of the comments that have come up

mind explaining how you achieved that scanner arm unit for the communications marine in that unit? Thatd be an excellent way to model the targeter on a devastator sergeant.

I'll put together a quick tutorial on him once the challenge is over - it can count as my Librarium article when I fail to complete them in time ;)

Nope, no Tau bits involved, the binoculars scanner is just a cut down chaos vehicle searchlight.

The basing technique was adapted from a method shown on the excellent Brushthralls site. In terms of colour choices, the mud is just Graveyard Earth, with a very light Bleached Bone drybrush. Before drybrushing, I tend to mix a bit of Camo Green and GE then water it right down to the consistancy of a wash and use that to break up the uniformity of the colour a bit.

wow these are great love to see what the cpatains bionic eye looks like

Quick WIP of the captain (poorly lit, and slightly blurry, but I can't be bothered setting up the light box and camera properly :))

Nice conversions!!!

Don't forget to grind off the small U at the bottom of Marneus Calgar's sword on your champion!

Btw, what does the acronym [LPC] stand for?

cheers

Librarium Painting Challenge?

Why it's in the front of the thread title may be a way to alert people what catagory the thread is refering to.

is the commander's head sculpted? if so you have massive skill! and what did you use for the guy's communication wrist thing?

Adding a bionic eye is about the limit of my sculpting ability, sadly. The head was originally IG - I use them as I feel the scale is slightly better than the marine heads. Re: the wrist communications panel - I'm going to do a proper how-to once I've finished painting these guys ^_^

looks like you copied the old RT-era Marine, expertly done!

I wondered who'd be the first to spot that :P In fact, both veterans are homages to RT era marines, the first the 'sensor' marine:

and the second the bike rider with scanner:

I spotted those immediately as well :D. Has Brother Argos' comms marine anything to do with the final design of yours too maybe? he did one inspired by the RT era one as well, some years back.

What are the bitz used on the comms marine?

I love all your conversions, especially the Champion one; that pose has been filed for future reference ;) This will look great all painted up. We require a picture of the entire Grief Bringers force at the end of the LPC of course.

Good to see you at it once more btw; haven't seen you around for a while. Here's to hoping your GB army will reach a playable state this year (and my FL after that :D )
