Blood Raven Land Riader Ares

Here is another conversion I worked all night on just prior to a local Apocalypse campaign game. Sadly, it was destroyed on Turn 4 by a wandering Laserdestroyer shot from a Warhound Titan. But I'm not bitter... This is also conversion number two for my Blood Ravens force.

This is a basic Land Raider Reedemer kit combined with a Vindicator kit. Yes, I used Balsa Wood to anchor the cannon itself. No matter how much I shaved or cut the Vindicator front plate, it just wasn't going to fit. Funny thing is, after I completed the Land Raider, I poked around on the GW websight and found more pictures of the Dark Angels Land Raider Ares. Seeing the top shot of the studio conversion, I instantly saw how they did it. Next time I guess. Why did I use Balsa Wood? I find Balsa to be much cheaper then Plasticard and much easier to work with. During the painting process, I'll have to add a few extra coats to that area as Balsa soaks up a lot of paint. I also have to "break" the Dozer Blade and come up with a better way of securing it- or at least make it look better.

When I do another one of these tanks, it'll look a lot more like what the GW Studio guys did. I'll even be able to move the Cannon up and down! So if anything, this was a "trial run" and I might even attempt to sell it so I can buy the parts to make my next one.

It's performance during the game was fantastic! I think I have found my new favorite tank in 40K.

Comments are always welcome!

in my opinion you should add more armor to cover the door hatch the vindicator cannon is mounted on.

how effective is this tank? the weapons are kind of all over the place, i dont see any real speicalty 9except the lovely pie plate lobber)

Too small? THose are the redeemer flame cannons, a perfect size...

Nice job, I'm contenplating constructing one myself, bit worried about chopping up over £60 of tank though...

As for the weapons....specialised in pure anti-infantry, at least thats how I see it....

Tamwulf,

Excellent job. I too have one of these lined up as a project a little later in the year. A couple of comments:

1. I noticed that you did not add the dual fans in the back, per the GW version. Was that due to lack of parts or was the fit more troublesome than the article indicated?

2. I noticed that you included the standard LRC frag launchers on this model. It seems like they would just expend themselves against the back side of the dozer blade. Also, is the Ares capable of transporting infantry? For some reason I thought not, which would be another reason to leave off the frag launchers.

3. It does not appear that you extended the sides of the dozer blade, per the GW version. Did you or did you just attach it to the front without extending the blade sides?

Cheers and excellent model.

Man that looks freakin awesome  .

Just a quick note, see your chronus guy The hatch is suppossed to cover his legs.

I.e you assemble him by putting the legs down first, then the hatch,

then you attach his arms and stuff

1. I did not see the full version of the GW Conversion until after I assembled mine. Rest assured, next time, I'll add it. :)

2. The complete rules for the Land Raider Ares tank can be found Here at the GW Websight. In a nutshell, it's a Land Raider with two twin linked heavy flamers, a twin linked assault cannon, Demolisher cannon, and dozer blade. It cannot transport anything. I included the Frag Launchers to just add more bling to the tank.

3. No, I did not extend the sides of the dozer blade for game play reasons- it would block the placement of the flamer templates. Again, I mearly mounted the blade in a quick and dirty fashion so I could play with it the next day during an Apoc Campaign game.

Just a quick note, see your chronus guy The hatch is suppossed to cover his legs.

He is not actually glued to the hatch. I was in a hurry, and decided to use Chronus right before the game started. Come on, a Land Raider with a BS 5 Demolisher Cannon? Sweeeeet! B)

As to how it performed? Well, the Apoc game was a three sided affair with 10,000 points per side (Xeno, Traitor, and Imperial)- for a total of 30,000 points. The Ares racked up...

8 Traitor Chaos Marines

15 Hormagaunts

6 Ork Nobs

8 Deamonettes

1 Soul Grinder

Wounded a Keeper of Secrets

It was sadly destroyed in Turn 5 right before unleashing a Hellish Barrage on a Keeper of Secrets, Masque, and more Daemons than you can shake a fist at. I said earlier that it was destroyed in turn 4, but it was actually turn 5. I'm not too keen on the new blast template rules in 5th Ed. Just seems lame that a Warhound Titan has only a 30% chance of hitting the target it is shooting at. :P It would have been nice if my Imperial Team Partner had waited for me to shoot my Ares first...

This was an Apoc Game, and there where some more juicy targets to shoot at then my Ares, though it withstood two shots from an Obliterators Multi-melta and the Soul Grinder spitting at it. For me, it was totally worth it to see the expression on everyone's faces- "Is that a Land Raider with a Demolisher Cannon on it? OMG!" I totally sent it on a suicide run on turn five against the Keeper of Secrets and Masque, as they where sitting on an objective. Thanks to the wandering Laserdestroyer shot, the Masque and Keeper survived and popped it's Apoc Datasheet ability, rolled some dice, and EVERY INFANTRY UNIT within 44" was moved upto 6". Very nasty and pretty much won the Traitors the game. :o :D

Is it worth it? Well, it costs almost the same amount as three Vindicator tanks. Armor 14 is a tough nut to crack, and Power of the Machine Spirit means at least one shot of something every turn. Anything that gets within 24" of it will die though. :D
