Modified Bolters MkII [Lpc]

Recommended Posts

Well I finally decided on a scheme and figured I would start a new thread. All the fluff has been changed and I'm fairly happy with it now. For my challenge I need to paint up my Chapter Master (and write fluff for him), paint half a tactical squad. That's a lot of work if you're lazy B) .

So I wrote up fluff for my Chapter at the same time (Some of it anyway), and started converting Chapter Master Kal'bn, who wields a Shotgun and a Relic Blade. He's based on Sicarius with an Iron Hands head, a nice Power Sword (Unsheathed), and a converted shotgun. :) Should get up some WIP tomorrow evening. Needs greenstuffing. Lots of it. Here's the fluff anyway. There's more to come at some point. I'm really tired so it's probably riddled with mistakes and such, and most of this probably doesn't make sense. I'll edit it later. After sleeping time. Oh wait the fluff yeah...

The Steel Fists Chapter

The Steel Fists are a successor of the Iron Hands Chapter, based on the small hive world of Thalass. Thalass is a planet with over 90% of its surface covered in water, meaning that the hive city’s are packed closely together. Of these hive cities there are three central ones, which are key to the planets survival, being the only ones with Space Ports. Therefore they generate much of the planets wealth, selling large quantities of the minerals and ores mined from under the huge oceans.

The Steel Fists Combat Doctrine

Unlike the Iron Hands who trained the first of them, the Steel Fists rarely use bionics except for the treatment of actual injuries. They instead focus on their weaponry, each weapon being different and suited to the user’s combat style. Because of this nearly every marine in the Chapter has at the least a basic knowledge of how most imperial weapons work, and there are a large number of fully trained Techmarines. Unlike other Chapters the Techmarines are not outcasts often train with the other marines. In addition to their daily combat training, each marine is granted greater amounts of free time to attend to their wargear. This often includes the modification of their weaponry, adding scopes, grips, grenade launchers, stocks and all manner of even more exotic upgrades to their weapons. Some even go as far to take apart their weapons completely and rebuild them from scratch in attempts to increase their effectiveness. Shotguns and sniper rifles are not limited to scout squads only, being a common sight in tactical squads. The result of this is that each marine takes to the field of a battle with a weapon that suits his style, with increased effectiveness, and makes for a devastating combination.

The Steel Fists Organisation

The Steel Fists are organised slightly differently to other Space Marine Chapters. Firstly there is no Captain of the First Company; it is led by the Chapter Master himself. Secondly the 10th Company is a company of fully trained Battle Brothers, rather than Scouts. Scouts are assigned to a company by the Chapter Master when they are recruited, and will stay with them until they are fully trained. When a Scout becomes a fully trained Battle Brother, he may choose from a selection of weapons, having tested many during his training, and has access to more powerful ones. He may also keep his weapon from his scout training, which he may have altered somewhat. Because there are 10 Companies of full marines, the Chapter has a strength of about 1100, 1000 Full Battle Brothers, and about 100 Scouts, 10 assigned to each Company. Note: This doesn't include the chain of command.

Current Chapter Master Kal’bn

The Current Chapter Master Kal’bn, is what you could call a true leader. He maintains that the only way to lead is from the front lines, and does so often. In combat he is devastating wielding a compact Sniper rifle combined with a Shotgun, and a large Powersword. The rifle has a powerful scope and can be fired as a semi automatic Sniper rifle (Solid bullet) or a powerful Shotgun (Fragmenting Shell), depending on the ammunition it is loaded with. He sports a jump pack to able to lead from where he is needed most.

C&C very much welcome, would love some, sorry for any errors and actual pics tomorrow. Promise. :)

EDIT: Removed the crusade rubbish, dunno what I was smoking when I wrote that. I think I'll rework the idea later, but I didn't like the day I'd wrote it, needed proper dates Etc. Anyways, Pics are taken with the old Tactical squad from the previous thread. One marine is nearly painted. Will upload them in a sec. For now though I'll stick with this fluff. Pics coming in the next hour. :)

Looking forward to the WIP Chapter Master.

I suggest you post the fluff in Liber Astartes, where your likely to get a lot more feedback on it. It looks really interesting. I especially like the individuality the marines have with their weapons.

Just counts them as bolters in the Tac Squads. Not too hard to remember in battle really. They just look cool. Mostly why I chose this fluff actually, so I can do some nice conversions. Only got one standard ish bolter in the first Tactial Sqaud. I'm gonna stick all the old pictures from my old thread in this post, then updates in the next one. Enjoy :(

Enjoy that whilst I go eat and upload some more up to date ones. :)

Also I may put the Fluff in IA at some point, it's not that important, but if I could get a couple of opinions here that'd be enough. :)

Curses, double post. :P

Ahwell here's the updated stuff. For the squad I have half done as close combat style marines, with the other half as long range fire support marines. The heavy goes with the long ranged fire support, the special goes with the close combat marines, who will also go in a rhino. These first 5 marines are the close combat ones, and the ones I'll be using for my Vow.

EDIT: Note: The highlights aren't this sharp in person. It's just the flash on my camera. I'll go take some non flash pictures now.

Now for the long ranged half of the squad. Still missing one marine.

This one is kind of a sniper, he has a zoom screen on the back of his bolter inspired by the halo sniper rifle, so he can fire it accuratly from the hip without having to pull it up to eye level.

"Plasma Cannon". My experimental weapon, counts as a plasma cannon.

http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo38/Snozzbucket/DSC00712.jpg

And last but not least my captain. I had trouble fitting the sword arm on past the cloak, so I cut and filed a large chunk out of the cloak, glued on the sword and hand, and will resculpt the cloak with green stuff, flowing around the new hand at the same time as I remove all the Ultramarines Iconography. The sword is the commander chainsword hand (Bionic one, fits with the fluff of steel fists), with the Assault Marines powersword blade stuck on the top. The shotgun is made to be shorter and more compact for wielding in one hand, and will have a scope added soon. The jump pack will need to be greenstuff so it will fit over his shoulders. It is basically modelling the bottom so it sits higher up on his back and clears his shoulder properly.

http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo38/Snozzbucket/DSC00688.jpg

http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo38/Snozzbucket/DSC00691.jpg

The shotgun / sniper rifle will be held up at about 45 degrees about horizontal if that makes sense. If not the barrel will be angled upwards but forwards at the same time. Lots of green stuff is required. :P

C&C very much welcome. :)

Thanks guys <_<

@SpeakerfortheDead - Thanks a lot, now that you mention that I spy a mould line on that model. Will sort that out later.

@Skull_Lord - Cheers :)

@Ra1stl1n - Thanks, if you mean the ones on the plasma cannon, they are from the tactical squad sprue. I think you might get them in some other sets aswell, had them lying around in my bitz box.

On another note Sicarius has to be converted up by Sunday for a little painting session down at Bromley GW. So expect finished pictures on Saturday Evening latest. :)

Thanks :). To make the underslung bolter: Remove the Iron sight on the bolter with a knife, take one of the gunner arms from the tank accessory sprue and shave the bottom down and the cross bar bits that connects it to the other arm, until it looks like a trigger. Remove the trigger and grip from the bolter, add a second magazine, glue together and you're good to go. Bit of greenstuffing might help though, depends how neat your cuts are. :)

Finished off the Chapter Master the other day and took him down to Bromley GW today for a bit of painting. Might try for an Iron Halo. :)

Here's pics, forgot to take any of the original greens, just got a couple of bits done on him. :)

Last two are with no flash, just to show that the highlights are so chalky in real life.

And here is the first finished marine based. Just need to finish off the chapter symbol. :)

EDIT: Just saw a couple of slip ups that don't matter too much, but have been painted over now. There was plastic showing in one place and silver paint which had strayed onto the armour elsewhere.

:)

Also I've touched up that unsightly bit of plastic showing on the Chainsaw Marine, and touched up a few other slips. Written a bit of fluff more in case you're interested.

Chapter Organisation

The chapter is divided into ten companies like any codex chapter. Each company consists of 100 marines and a small number of scouts each, usually around ten per company. This gives the chapter a strength of 1100 men, not counting the chain of command. Each company is led by a Captain, or the Chapter Master in the case of the first company, and each Captain is responsible for how each of his squads are trained. This means each company will have different tactics and consist of a variety of squad types. Company colours are displayed on the right knee pad along with squad number, squad type symbols are not displayed. Marines always stay in their company until they die, they are never promoted to a different company unless either one company has been nearly destroyed and marines are transferred there temporarily to keep it alive until it has regained its strength or when the Chapter Master dies, in which case a captain from another company will be promoted to Chapter Master (First Company).

C&C Welcome. :)

I like most of these bolters, the only one that bugs me is the one with the bull pup extension on it from the tau gun, built that way it has two seperate pistol styled hand grips and two trigger areas. Looks somewhat funny, if you're simply aiming to extend the butt of the bolter maybe trim it a tad shorter and get rid of the second hand grip. If it's meant to be a secondary trigger for a seperate weapon built in like an underslung grenade launcher etc it make s a bit more sense, but since the rest of the bolter is stock it doesn't quite mesh IMO.

I like the other design quite a bit.

@Terminatorinhell: Thanks, go for it :(

@Paulson Games: The trigger has been greenstuffed over now, so it doesn't have two anymore. Though a grenade launcher couldn't hurt. Will have to do one of those at some point. :)

Other little things I've done now that I forgot to mention are all the barrels are drilled out properly, and the Experimental Plasma Cannon has a proper ammo type thing made from a melta bomb. Didn't do pics for these yet, will show when painted.

in basic companys, only the battle company (60 tactical marines, 20 assault 20 dev's) are counted in the "100 marines per company" thing. (in the event of 6th and 7th, 10 tac, ext.

this means command squads are not counted in this, and im not entierly certain on weather rhino drivers/ tanks and other vehicals are counted.

IE, a chapter at full strength is probably already at 1100 marines. i only mention this because you gave an accurate number, thought you should know theres also the chain of command and such.
