Bloodthirster Upgrades

The GUO has breath and since he's a MC he rolls 3D6 for S&P, so it isn't all that crippling. Breath is there for a good first turn drop or in case he gets bogged down. The big booger is there to go after other MCs and characters with noxious touch, in addition to soaking up stupid amounts of fire.

I'd probably run him with just Cloud of Flies, keep him really cheap and yet threatening.

I have looked at the Aura of Decay but honestly its only useful against massed T3 units and even then it only wounds on a 5+

Aura of Decay is pretty laughable. "ooh, ahh...I wound grots on 4+!"

I think the GUO's real selling points are the low cost and the high durability. I mean, the odds of getting triple 1's on 3d6 are pretty low. They happen, but on 3d6, you should do well. Get Cloud of Flies to recieve the charge, and you're genrally good.

As a rule, I NEVER expect to get flamer templates off with footsloggers unless they're coming out of a transport. Everyone knows you've got it, and they can avoid it or charge you before you get there. Honestly, if I have a choice between eating a Breath of Chaos and a charge from Mr. GUO, and charging it? I'd rather cut down on the shots and his extra attack.

The GUO isn't really designed as an all out assault unit, imo he's more like a giant distraction. Stick him up front to screen your more valuable units, and watch as the enemy pours fire in to the guy. Oh, and I agree with Raptor, you're never gonna get that template off, he's just too slow, and like Raptor I always assault units when I can, no sense letting yourself get charged.

True, the best you can do is use him like Tyranids use a Melee Carnifex.

Hit a unit with a fast moving squad (Daemonettes, Seekers, Flesh Hounds etc) and wait for the big guy to wander over and finish the job. Or you could use Pavane to bring things closer.

While very true, most players are smart enough to keep their MCs away from the big guy with the poisoned weapons, and as the slowest MC out there, he hasn't got a great chance of catching them. There are ways of course, such as tying the MC up with another unit, but it's not easy against competent players.

Yeah, the GUO is good IF you can hold his target in place. Nurglings are great for that, since it's a lotta wounds to cut through.

He's a slow-moving hammer-type unit, to be honest.

Bloodthirster is the FAST hammer, but he's a good 100 points more (past upgrades) than Mr. GUO. You pay that for the ability to put him where you want, when you want him there.

Bloodthirster is also much, MUCH faster. I have to say it again; after a turn he's got 12"+6"+d6 of assault range, that d6 being the RUn on the turn you rserved in. GUO gets d6 + Move Through Cover + Move Through Cover.

Slight difference, there.
