This is the reason why I do not attempt to compete at a Games Day painting event... Well done sir!

I second that remark, both parts.

Lovely job on the captain, you should at least place with this piece. Good luck at Toronto

Really awesome work.

Would i be right in thinking you're using an airbrush for significant portions of this?

If so i would love some pointers from or, or links to tutorials you find worthy, as i cant manage anything smaller than a Dread with my AB and i'm sure it's all down to pressure settings and technique that i just don't have

The airbrush in this case was used to apply the base color on the cape and the cloak as well as a first shadow. As for pointers... well it all depends what airbrush you have in the first place and the size of your needle. The smaller one is usually the best for this kind of exercise. Mine is 0.2mm. But as usual, most of the work on this mini was done with a brush and thinned down paint.

wow, fast reply, thanks :P

I have two one is a .2 and the other a .5, the two problems i've had in the past are firstly air pressure, its either blowing a gale and not feeling under control, or not transferring pigment, not for the small fine lines required on a single figure.

the second problem is that usualy any paint i brush over an airbrushed section spoils the "finish" no matter how thin the paint. I can clearly see you dont have the problem of paint finish, as your work is flawless, have you ever encountered it?

The best tip I can give you is to never retract your needle to the maximum. Always go little. Furthermore working with an airbrush is like working with a brush. It's a succession of thin coat that will give you your finish. Don't expect to get full coverage at your first passage. After that if you plan to retouch with a brush you need to be able to do nice blended colors with a brush if you do not want to mess your airbrush finish. I do not know what is your level so I can't say for sure but if you have issues with blending your problem is probably there.

If you are a planning to go to GENCON I'm giving 2 classes on airbrushing and figurines.

a bit far for me unfortunately :/

I'm back into the hobby after a quite long absence, bot a "pro" but no novice either, and i can usually manage reasonable blends but something goes a bit wrong with the finish over airbrushed work, wet blending looks to "coarse", glazing looks a bit "grainy" both these things are unnoticable normally, but the hyper smooth finish of the airbrush shows them up.

as you say most likely shortcomings in my technique. if i could blend to the quality of finish of my airbrush however, i would be really happy :)

Cheers for your words so far, i'll slink off now and stop hijacking your thread with questions :)

consider your blog Fav'ed though

So the major work on gold is done. There will probably be some finition here and there but so far so good. Now on to the 21 skulls and the face...

my goodness do those golds look nice? question, what brand gold metallics do u use?

It's a mix of GW Mithril Silver and Shinning Gold as a base. Shadows are Umbral Umber and Thamar Black from P3 and highlight is pure Mithril Silver. GW metallics are simply the best!

We have a head! I'll rework the bottom lip and the gums to make them redder/pinker. I had no gloss varnish handy, another post-fire syndrome, so I'll get some at the store tomorrow and fix that. Otherwise I had some issues capturing all the nuances with the camera. The light flattened pretty much everything so when all the various parts should be more defined and have a forehead a little bit more yellow well we have this... Anyhow!
