Warhound Titan - COMPLETED!

I accepted a commission to paint up a Warhound Titan in a theme that matches the Grey Knights. While I'm not sure that concept makes sense fluff-wise, it's what the customer wants. Here's how the beauty arrived:

I'll have to do some touch up work and a little bit of "re-primering", but otherwise it should be good to go. The customer requested a Standard Quality project from my menu (see the link in my signature), with lots of washes and drybrushing. My goal is have it look as clean as possible for the tabletop, while standing up to close scrutiny. It is likely that I will be tackling another Titan in the future under the Show Piece Quality, so this will be a good test to find out what techniques will ease the process, as well as overcoming any issues with time, resources, and detail management.

Tonight will be the first night of the project, so I had better get ready!

I'll try to keep this updated often, but my work time consists mostly of nights and weekends.

Okay, so here are some photos of a test-run of the paint scheme. I haven't finished brightening up the gold yet, but the grey tones have finally reached a level I am pleased with. It took about three different tries.

The customer's scheme is a little different, but FW Titans seem to be far more textured than regular GW models, so the drybrushing technique employed on his Grey Knights turns out a little different here.

Anyway:

Again, I still have to work on the gold. The grey I tried to achieve was that of an ancient, almost made of stone appearance. It grants a bit of an archaic appearance to the giant machine.

I hope you guys, and my customer, enjoy this so far.

You mean, how did I do it?

Here are the GW equivelants.

COLOR

Chaos Black

Adeptus Battlegrey

Badab Black Wash (recesses only)

Shadow Grey

Shadow Grey + Space Wolves Grey

Space Wolves Grey

Space Wolves Grey + Fortress Grey

Fortress Grey

Asurman Blue Wash (very lightly)

line with Skull White

GOLD

Scorched Brown

Devlan Mud Wash

Shining Gold

Gryphonne Sepia Wash

Shining Gold again

The gold I might change.

It's a little different because the customer performed the scheme on a single Grey Knight Terminator. The surfaces are a little smoother, and he used a few different colors and techniques. Forgeworld models are highly textured, so there's more of a stone finish than the smooth metal plates of terminator armor. I decided to work with it. It's a little different, but the effect seems nice.

Hey everybody! I apologize for the delays. I had an ill daughter, and my wife was on her spring break this week (she's a teacher), so I had to do a lot of family time. I did manage to get some more work done, however, so without further ado:

As you can see, I have action going on all over the model. It's been quite an attraction at my FLGS. The customer and I agreed on a Standard Quality (tabletop) method, with lots of washes and drybrushes. I've managed to get the primary color on all of the large armor plates, and the base metal is down. I'm going to be working on the gold trim tomorrow, as well as cleaning up the metal. After that, it will be on to the servitors and pilot crew, as well as any little pipes, markerlights, and Inquisitor symbols.

Thanks for viewing!

I never realy realized just how large those titans are, but seeing just a part of the leg in your hand puts it into perspective. that thing is massive, i dont think i could build one let alone paint it.

are you brush painting it or airbrushing? if your using a brush, my hat goes off to you my friend, that is courageous

It's all by hand, mate. I used to have access to an airbrush years ago, and I should probably make the investment again someday.

As to the model's size: yes, it's huge. Whenever I take up space in my FLGS to paint for a few hours, it always becomes the center attraction. I usually bring an Imperial Guardsmen or something for scale. :)

Oh yeah, and I actually have pretty big hands, so that should tell you just how massive this thing is.

Anyway...

As it currently stands, I have nearly completed all of the gold trim. Unforunately, my camera was left at my wife's place of work, so I likely won't have it back until Thursday. I will get some pictures soon.

Next up will be the bone and crimson details, followed be "re-blackening" areas primered and left black, or that were hit by the onslaught of boltgun metal.

yea the reason the titan looks more textured is because the original prime job was gritty...

usually id reccomend stripping the scrubbing the whole thing cuz you wont be able to get a smooth paint job but...if youre goin for the stone look...the grits perfect lol

Okay, so after a long hiatus courtesy of Easter and other family happenings, here are some updates.

Some weathering detail is coming to life on the exhaust. Again, as it's a "Standard Quality" project, I will only take it so far.

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/doogansquest/P4152987.jpg

The gun looks ready to shoot a thousand rounds a minute.

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/doogansquest/P4152989.jpg

I've just laid the basecoat on the tabbard/ribbon thing, as well as on the Inquisition symbols throughout the model.

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/doogansquest/P4152993.jpg

Smile for me!

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/doogansquest/P4152994.jpg

As always, C&C is welcome.

I've also just accepted three further commissions, including a squad of Eldar Rangers, a 10-man squad of Blood Ravens Assault Marines, and potentially an entire Eldar army behind that. Not to mention I plan on having a Gamesday entry ready for Chicago in July. Busy summer!

Well, here's the final pictures of the Warhound Titan, painted to tabletop standard. Hefty project, to say the least.

That looks hot:

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/doogansquest/P4212996.jpg

Woah doggy, he's big.

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/doogansquest/P4212999.jpg

Better make that arrow count, man of Bretonnia...

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/doogansquest/P4213000.jpg

Well, hopefully I won't be doing anything massive like this again anytime soon, at least until I get an airbrush kit and a better camera. It's hard to do this wonderfully detailed model the justice it deserves without such tools. I couldn't take a picture of the pilot, for example, without a really bad shadow and flash combination. I'll work on that for the sake of showing the completed project.

Thanks for watching. I've started a new project painting 5 Eldar Rangers to look just like the ones on page 76 of the Eldar Codex (per customer request), and a 10-man unit of Kasrkin/Stormtroopers.
