Hvy Support Q

Many people go by the standard "if you are going to take one ....take two, esp as it applies to hvy support.

I could have all 3 HS slots filled by havocs if I wanted, I have 2X2 oblits, 2 preds, but only have 1 LR, 1 vindi, 1 defiler, and am looking to expand by getting a second of one of these.

So which is best of these to have 2 of ???

the way i see it...

defiler- ord + hth ability but AV 12 is kinda on the weak side + large hard to hide.

vindi- ord. with that all important 13 AV + lower profile, but shorter range and no hth

LR - the best AV of the 3 + troop transport, but the most expensive

-

looking for opinions ??

-

as to what kinda army I run, unually a good balance, but the shooty to CC ratio does vary some from list to list.

I never use lash.

suggestions welcome, b4 I buy.

with one being longer range and the other one being short range +defilers are mostlly used in walker hvy lists , while people try to use vindicators in normal ones]. the many different targets rule is ok for a hth army [like chaoszilla or a LR zerker build] , but most chaos armies are not pure hth armies , they are short range assault .

I think that the spam rule is important , more synergy in the list is always better , then 3 different ones .

as the what to get thing . go for a LR , you never know when you want to play with a LR rush army and for that you need 2 .

I'd say that 2 Land Raiders get the most bang for that second buck, as AV14 all around is still rather difficult to kill without a dedicated Melta squad.

2 Vindicators (with DP) is probably the second best as everyone is scared of their pie plate and DP means they have to be destroyed or lose their weapon before the are no longer a threat (sometimes immobilized works, it depends where).

2 Defilers also works, but I think its less dependant on having a copy.

For me, both Drudge and Jeske are correct. Spamming 2-3 of thing exact same things is the easiest way to incorporate redundancy in your army. However it looks kinda boring (this is all up to the person) and it possibly could hurt you on comp scoring.

Having 2-3 units that are equivalent or attract the same kind of attention (read: you shoot them with the same weapons) can also work, good example of this is 2 Vindicators:1 Land Raider

As for what to purchase, I think a Land Raider is always welcome. Like Jeske said you never know when you'll want to play a Raider rush force.

Or squeeze in that 4th vehicle and give your Terminators a ride.

Yeah I pretty much agree with the guys above me. I would definately choose the land raider. I personally think its a great model too, and that with the above reasons...

2 vindis are kinda boring in a chaos army methinks and a defiler is quite expensive cash wise...

I always build from whats important. In this version its troops, so when I pack a certain type of troop I run my heavy support like its pun. As support.

So if I run with ranged troop warfare that can move and shoot, I try to pack some blast/ord to scatter the enemy and force his 24" range weapons to spread thin. If I run a static (unlike sonic/sons) firepower troops then I pack some diversionary heavy support that will take hits, (usually 3 predators) until they get their position or objective. If I run melee/short ranged(transports) then my heavy support will be very cheap and mean looking like a few vindicators, maybe a defiler and melee dreadnought as well.

When I run havocs as of recent, I make them 20 strong with 4 meltas and a powerfist totting an icon with a few support daemons, all the while the few daemons/troops will hold their objective. Havocs are my "Expendible Shock Troops" along side my chosen that outflank for their advance kitted out similarly.

I run obliterators often with my noise marines, for their 3 blast plates and their mobile firepower, to make use of that 4+ cover save then move my noise marines out of the way for an unhindered AP2 barrage. My defilers run a bit more advanced version and I always run two or none, they sit in each corner to try and blow the enemy away. At the very least to contest any objectives near the end of the game, and charge forward when opptertunities present themselves. If I want a melee defiler, I pick something thats 1/3rd less in cost(dreadnought) and free up a heavy slot.

If I run predators, that means my troops lack in something heavily, like a ton of berzerkers, or otherwise lacking. If I run with a bunch of rhinos, then I always throw one vindicator in to take hits and be their big bro escort. It's just there to take hits, rarely ever get a shot with it. When I run with 3 vindicators, its normally in a thousand sons force.

My land raiders, never use them anymore. When I do I get yelled at... Apparently they dont like my tank shock and ram with 6 land raiders in 2k. Well hey, go big or go home right? Its funny to watch 3 whirlwinds get rammed to death by the same raider. (3 terminators+transport)
