Noi
Hi, I've been lurking here for a few weeks now after deciding to get back into the hobby after a 15 year hiatus. Wow things in 40K have changed, where did Necrons and Tau come from! Anyway, I picked Imperial Fists because way back then there was hardly anything for them (even getting a transfer sheet was hard) and I always liked the fluff. Here is my WIP stuff so far, none of it could be classed as finished yet, it's just basic stuff so I could get the models on the board. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/2009_0106newcameratest0122.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/2009_0106newcameratest0123.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/2009_0106newcameratest0124.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/2009_0106newcameratest0126.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/2009_0106newcameratest0129.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/2009_0106newcameratest0133.jpg Sorry about the quality of the photos, years of caffeine abuse haven't been kind to me in the shaky hand department! HVNSNTSOLDIER
Awesome! For someone who just joined the hobby again, and has a shaky hand problem, these paintjobs are amazing! Especially that nice, even yellow coat. It's very rare to find a paintjob that smooth, mostly with yellows. Great job, dude, keep it up! Do we expect to see any custom heroes/conversions in the near future? Noi
Thanks, I definatlay plan on doing some conversion work in the future but for now I'm just trying to get my painting level up a bit. Did a bit more work on the librarian today and tried to get some better photo's but I really need to read the manual for my camera! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0127.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0128.jpg And a slightly better photo of the wip AOBR captain http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0123.jpg Critique and suggestions more than welcome! IronDuke
Very nice looking minis, esepcially liking the blue highlighting on the rear of the librarian. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1924653 Share on other sites
Noi
Thanks, I was trying to follow where the light from my lamp fell on the armour, I think a few extra layers might have helped though. Noi
Did a bit of work on the Rhino today, and tried a little bit of freehand on the side. I think it's alright for a first time try but there's a lot of scope for improvement http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0138.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0140.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0142.jpg Still a few coats of yellow to go on! Captain Pugno
they are very nicely painted - some nice freehand, although you said it could be better, it is much better than I or probably quite a few board members culd acheive :) I particularly like your HQ's Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1927220 Share on other sites
Noi
Thanks, the librarian is for a competition in my local GW on Saturday, not expecting much after 6 weeks back in the hobby but we learn from our defeats! Nearly finished with the rhino, just a little bit of detail and the transfers to go for it to be battle ready http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0145.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0146.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0147.jpg Tried to do another bit of freehand on the front but didn't have any reference material so can anyone see what its supposed to be?? Boomsly
it looks like a plant wrapped around the vehicle/squad number, am i right? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1929542 Share on other sites
stinkenheim
it looks like a plant wrapped around the vehicle/squad number, am i right? i'd aree with that... or else it could be vines around a column, kinda represnting the fortification side of fists through a stylised piece of architecture... or am i just reading to much into it :D loving the work btw, great painting considering how little time you've been back in the hobby also great painting on the rhino door :) +edit+ came up with another idea based on the column theme... it represents them supporting the imperium in the aftermath of th horus heresy and that they are pillars of the imperial ideal :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1929982 Share on other sites
Noi
Thanks guys, yeh it's a roman 2 with vines wrapped around it! Glad it wasn't too indistinguishable! Just discovered the joys of the homemade wet palette today and that is really helping, especially when using the foundation paints! Edit @ stinkenhiem - your interpretation sounds much cooler, so yeh that's what it is :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1930129 Share on other sites
Noi
I have done about ten hours work on my Vanguard Vets over the past couple of days, anyone else have a unit that everything seems to go wrong with? Here's how they look so far http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0150.jpg Not completely happy with how they are turning out but I'll persevere, I want them and a predator finished by Monday so I can start learning how to play! And an Intruder on the painting table! I'm thinking of turning it into a Stegadon......... http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0153.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1931389 Share on other sites
Boomsly
i like the legion relic you have there :) but i do have to ask what is your recipe for the yellow as it is so nice and vibrant, also how did you do the white on the veterans as it looks very smooth. overall i say you are making very good progress even though the vangaurd are going wrong Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1931398 Share on other sites
Noi
Thanks. The yellow is just a black undercoat, 3 thin coats of Iyaden Darksun, some watered down Scorched Brown in all the recesses and lots of coats of Sunburst Yellow on top! The white is simply Codex Grey base-coat with a couple of thinned down coats of Skull White on top. Its the Scorched Brown in the recesses that makes the yellow stand out. I hasten to add no hamsters were harmed during the making of this post..... :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1931410 Share on other sites
khairney
i dont know if its just me, but your hamster looks freakishly large... the army is looking really good man! iv been thinking about starting up a fists army for a while now, so i might just nick your yellow recipe! mwahaha. Noi
Thanks, the hamsters not huge, the desks just small, lol! Been cracking on with the librarian. Its due in to my local GW for a panting comp at 4pm tomorrow and I still have a fair bit of detail and highlighting to do ...! Here is how it looks with the deadline 16 hours away http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0160.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0161.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0162.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1932667 Share on other sites

PlagueBearer
Welcome back to the Hobby!!!I like your hamster!!! But lets talk about your modelling-painting skills... THEY ARE GREAT!!! Have you really been away from the hobby for 15 years???I cannot believe it!!!And you can still paint like that?Did you stop playing 40K and continue painting or did you have nothing to do with the whole hobby for 15 years?Your painting skill are amazing! The yellow is so nicely and neatly smooth and the highlights are great!I have seen yellows before but rarely so well painted and with the correct highlighting. The vanguard look well too.The white is again smooth and well painted and the yellow too.The freehands on the rhino are exceptional and your scouts and librarian are also great! Seems you made a great reentry in the hobby!Keep it up and keep posting!!! -PlagueBearer- Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1933189 Share on other sites
Noi
@ Karitas - Lol! @ Plaguebearer - I stopped playing when I was 14/15, I'm nearly 28 now, not quite 15 years exactly but close. Not touched a paintbrush since, and I can't say I was any good back then, more a splash and dash painter. I've kind of surprised myself a little to be honest. Thank you for your feedback! Managed to get the Librarian in with an hour to spare although there are bits I'm not too happy with and other bits I would have done differently. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0163.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y108/johnynoi/DSCF0164.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1933299 Share on other sites
blood_raven_240
Liking the 'Hamsterdon' Anyway, I hope your Painting Competition goes well. Try and take some pictures of the competition, if you can! When you return from the Competition, we'll re-judge the results, and tell you if you should/shouldn't have won. Anyway, you've just inspired my next Fan Fiction piece. 'March of the Hamsterdon' Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/163589-imperial-fists/#findComment-1933303 Share on other sites
Noi
Ha, I'd like to see that piece of fan fiction  The judging/voting isn't until tomorrow, I just had to register and take the model in today for display, I really wish I'd thought of taking my camera down! blood_raven_240
Well, if I get enough motivation behind me, maybe I will  No bother about the Competition. Couldn't you take some pictures when you're collecting your miniature (and hopefully your prize)?
