Just Tacticals and rhinos

What would you guys think of the idea of having just tactical squads and rhinos running all over the board.

 

Just have them with different weapon configurations to deal with certain things

and maybe just for fun have 2 devastator squads running around in razorbacks and have everybody fill out different roles.

 

What do you guys think

Tactical squads in rhinos are very good at what they do, but run as the only unit type is a mistake,

you need to run specialised troops as well.. Assault squads etc...

 

A half company is a great choice, 3 tac squads with rhinos a dev squad and assault squad with chappy in about 1500 points, i used this against Tau and had a lot success with it.

It generally works out pretty well...the only problem is it's EXTREMELY BORING to play. It's the same, monotonous play: combat squad, deploy heavy weapons and ablative wounds in cover...put cc serg and other guys in rhino, rush rhinos forward, provide cover fire, assault, game over. I boarded a Tau opponent using this configuration. It was HIDEOUSLY dull to play, however.

Add in some tanks (a Vindie or a cheap Predator or two) to take some of the heat off your Rhino transports.

 

Also, Razorbacks and Bike Squads make for excellent supporting units to the Crash of Rhinos tactic.

 

Dreadnoughts don't work so well for the assault force, but a long range firepower Dread can make for a good support/cover for your stay at home combat squads.

I've thought about similar armies for Chaos and I think they have an easier time pulling it off, being able to take 2 Special Weapons.

However it would work for Loyalists too, especially since you have alot more Transporting options. Rhinos/Drop Pods for full 10 close combat/rapid fire squads and Razorbacks for fire support and/or combat squads.

 

A combination of Heavy Bolters/Missile Launchers and Multi-Melta will handle most anything at range, especially backed up by Melta/Plasmaguns.

I think it has a lot of potential; I typically run a core list of 3-4 tac squads in Rhinos, with Lysander and some terminators or something. The devestator squads can provide good cover fire, though I think you'd have a tough time with monstrous creatures.

 

My recommendation if you played this list would be to keep all the rhinos together and not combat squad the marines; this way you bring the maximum force to bear on your opponent.

I run with 4/5 tactical squads in rhinos with flamer and missile launcher.

The tacticals don't perform overly well on their but in co-operation with an assault squad, sternguard or even a dreadnaught their ability to take out other units gets significantly higher.

They also benefit severely from a special character, such as my favourite Pedro Kantor.

 

@tedwin183: It depends on how you play. I personally enjoy using my vehicles to affect what my opponent thinks I'm doing, which in turn affects how they will play their own army and gives me an advatage I can use.

 

@minigun762: I really want to recreate my loyal force as chaos because you are fully correct, they are just better at these tactics.
