BulldogUK
Recently got a nice selection of hot foam tools from evilbay. Having wanted some decent scenery for a while I decided to cut my teeth and get some practice by making some! First off the blocks will be an imperial Fortress, if this goes well I may build a partial city to sit inside it's walls for some nice urban combat. I figured these easy geometric shapes would be a good warm-up for some of the bigger and bolder plans I have in the near future! Anyhow, got to work Sunday evening and came up with the basic shape, based on the FW scenery I probably wont go OTT with the detail on this one, practically speaking I really don't have anywhere to store it so chances are it will be going on evilbay ASAP! It stretches neatly accross a 4 foot table and stands 2 feet to the top of the spires, below is the basic shape, lots of shaping and a few arches here and there to add, will probably make up a few destroyed sections to replace in game to represent breaches Will probably slap a little textured paint over then use the airbrush to add some depth. oh the thing breaks down into seprate wall and tower section and I have to add a gate of course! The primary building blocks.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress2604.jpg Towers on the up http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/fortress2704.jpg Most of the ground work done now, note Odin's ex AA guns fit perfectly on the flak towers! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/fortress28043.jpg This shot shows a Baneblade and Reaver Titan for scale http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/fortress28044.jpg The top of the towers lift off to allow access for troops http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/fortress28046.jpg There is plenty of room on the walls for a defensive garrision also http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/fortress2804.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167198-imperial-fortress-scenery-n-stuff-hot-foam-heaven/ Share on other sites

ShinyRhino
This looks great so far. Care to share a shot of the tools themselves? Amazing that you can achieve such clean, flatlines with a foam cutter. Also, do those defense guns fire gerbils, or something larger like rabbits or capybara? HIMSA
That's totally awesome. Should be interesting how much strength the textured paints lends to the foam though... Particularly around the rampart type areas... GumbaFish
I think it is looking really nice. My only question is the durability of some of the thinner pieces like the railings or the top of those towers you have marines in. Foam isn't exactly the most stout material especially when thin, perhaps consider making them out of plasticard or thin mdf? Then again I am a bit of a clutz so I know I would break them by accident at some point, but perhaps you are more agile than I am =) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167198-imperial-fortress-scenery-n-stuff-hot-foam-heaven/#findComment-1970755 Share on other sites
Chaptermaster Graymantle
Looks quite good already. With some smaller details, Imperial Eagles and texture, followed by a neat paint job, it could be superb! Very inspiring! - Keep it up! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167198-imperial-fortress-scenery-n-stuff-hot-foam-heaven/#findComment-1970868 Share on other sites

BulldogUK
Tools are pictured below, just ebay 'hot foam cutter' should bring a large selection up. This initial set cost about 50 quid, quite an expensive outlay however I new I was gonna be doing some major large scale projects so it was worth it for me, heck already saved about £500 on this Fortress ;D Anyhow, tools from left to right, standard wire cutter, engraver (think this is gonna come into its own when doing the Bio-titan, etc and finally on the right the hot knife. Don't believe anybody when they say size doesn't matter, this thing is awesome, 4.5 inch blade allows you to drill/cut at any angle, a lot more versatile than the bog standard cutter. Also they are mains powered which means no expensive batteries and nice constant power supply http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress29044.jpg Btw, here the main materials used, poly insulation board, poly ceiling tiles and poly lining paper, about £15 worth in all and plenty left for other projects! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress2904.jpg Anyhow, started adding a little detail, still wanting to maintain my cheap n cheerful approach I chanced upon the foam paper liner, about 4 quid for a roll as long as an MP's expense sheet (loooooooooong) First I made card templates for the commonly used shapes http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress29042.jpg Transfer these patterns onto the foam and carefully cut out, cuts easy and is very relaxing! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress29043.jpg Finally dab of glue on the reverse and lay them down over the structure, this is gonna be one of those lobotomy mind numbing processes which unfortunately there is no way around! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress29045.jpg Oh, which brings me to the subject of the glue, I used evostick solvent free impact adhesive, pretty much like the rubber copydex glue but worked out cheaper by volume. Sticks this foam like the proverbial sh*t to an army blanket, most DIY stores stock it Oh, one more thing, I discovered that the whippy red ruler things GW includes with games would make great columns for the fortress, I only have two if you have any spare please give me a prod, I can paypal postage if your willing to part with them! Cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167198-imperial-fortress-scenery-n-stuff-hot-foam-heaven/#findComment-1970974 Share on other sites

paulson games
Very impressive, I am in awe of your projects yet again. Are you lining the exterior with the thin foam? Or just leaving the foam as is? My only concern would be that the surface could get scratched or damaged during game play. Other than that it looks perfectly dead on with the forge world design. I wish I was able to see this stuff in person. Spagunk
So how are you looking to paint the things? I ask because i've tried using foam similar to what you have using primer and the primer ate through the foam. Are you looking to brush on your base coat? BulldogUK
Jaysus fellas, quit with the pressure, it might end up a real bag-o-bollocks! In which case I aint posting any pictures ^_^ Spagunk, it's gotta be solvent free paint, you can buy foam safe sprays but they tend to be expensive. I have gone for blackboard paint as its cheap, covers well and fills a few gaps here n there if your generous with it, oh and of course its water based. Anyhow! Did a little work on the details over the weekend, just a few more pillars to add here n there and then it's onto the painting! The 'pillars' are made from the measuring 'whippy' sticks and old plastic sprues http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress0605093.jpg I have created some buttress mounted defences from card and a few old weapons I found loitering in the bits box http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress0605095.jpg The larger arches will hold a statue (details later) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress0605096.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress0605097.jpg The gate detail is done too, it's a simple slide in and out job via a slot at the top of the wall http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress0605094.jpg First stage of painting will be to paint everything in two generous coats of blackboard paint, this will seal the foam and fill any minor gaps. I'm going to experiment with some textured spray from here-on. If my theory isnt correct this time next week I will either be presenting a pristine off-world Imperial Fortress or a pile of gloopy slag that looks like it has been nuked from orbit ::) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/BulldogUK/Fortress0605092.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/167198-imperial-fortress-scenery-n-stuff-hot-foam-heaven/#findComment-1978780 Share on other sites

Severus6
Excellent work. The look and feel of this beast is perfect. Its the little pieces that really make this thing, the vambraces and outlines on the walls. Its all excellent.
