Chaos Dreadclaws

Recommended Posts

I was surprised yesterday to recieve a baneblade kit as a gift.

So naturally, my Iron Warriors are going to corrupt that tank and I have plans to use this in my Iron Warriors Apoc list, or in larger doubles games with friends.

Now I stated to think about what other units I'd like to employ in a strictly apoc setting or with friends. Besides my IW Basilisks and Baneblade I was thinking on including 3 dreadclaw assault pods. Using an image search on google I came across a Death guard pod which was converted from the plastic drop pod. Now spending about 70 bucks on ebay for a set of 3 pods and converting them is much more to my liking than paying the forgeworld price for a unit which can not be used in standard games.

So I was wondering if anyone has done this, and if so was there any tips to share other than put the fins on upside-down?

Well... technically you CAN use Dread Claws in normal games, using the Forge World rules and consent of your opponent. I only find it fair, if a Space Marine user can use Drop Pods, I should be able to use Dread Claws. Let's not forget as well, Drop Pods were also quite common Pre-Heresy, so using them as normal Drop Pods is okay, too. I need to pick up more Dread Claws, though...

As far as turning a Drop Pod into a Dread Claw ala Forge World's design, I don't see it being done easily. The Dread Claw is quite larger then the Drop Pod and its design is a lot different. One I could might see it work is if you extend the fins down past the bottom and add smaller stabilizers to the sides. Of course spikes and such all about. But their designs are completely different from the get-go so... good luck, lol.

I saw a quick conversion done using the plastic kit on google image search. The fins extended down past the bottom, elevating the actual pod. There were hooks and other chaos bits attached to the doors and all.

As you pointed out there are several design difference between the two pods. The dreadclaw doesn't really open as there is an airlock hatch on the bottom and the dreadclaw rises on its fins to give enough room for marines to disembark from underneath the pod.

Given the difference I think I'll try once a conversion once the rest of my troops and the Baneblade are finished. The tempation to have a few for about 30 bucks each is to great to ignore. also have to get my hands on the forgeworld rules, which book are they in?

You can find them in Imperial Armour 6: The Siege of Vraks Part II, and Imperial Armour Apocalypse. IA:6 would be better though, and it has army lists to play a Lost and the Damned-esque force (really fun!).

In the world of Games Workshop, nothing is free.
All the rules for specialist games are! :)

I'd be eager to see some good plans for converting, as I'd also like to do this.

Not even those are anymore.

Huh? Some of the expansions are gone, but they now offer MORE free games than they used to, afaik.

Necromunda - still up ther

Epic - ditto

Mordhiem - ditto

Battlefleet Gotic

Blood Bowl - ditto (was this free before?)

Warmaster - also newly free

Inquisitor - Yes, you can get the INQUISITOR rules for free!

For all Specialist "resources" (ie, free rules)

Yeah, you can't get Battle of Five Armies free... probably something to do with thier LotR liscense. But if you go to the Out of Print Games page, you can get Brewhouse Bash, Gorka Morka, Pit Fighter, and more of the "what ever happened to" stuff!

I am in the same scenario but I don't wanna just put the fins on upside downish and rely on my rather sucky conversion skills, you can find good templates online like I did, PM me if you fancy them if not I'd reccomend the drop pods Farseer just posted they look to be pretty good and can be bought in a combo pack of 3 for 60 Australian Dollars!.

They're made out of wood. My LGS has one for usage, and it's pretty neat. The hull is slightly bigger than a standard drop pod, just like a dreadclaw, though the fins stay the same.

Thanks,

I was wondering how they looked as they are MDF. I want them to blend into the Iron Warriors army and not have a noticable grain in the metallic finish.

The conversion of the plastic pod I've seen looks like this:

It's neat, but it really doesn't do it for me. I'd rather just buy Drop Pods as they were used Pre-Heresy, or save up cash and buy more Dread Claws... even though they're a pain in the ass to assemble.
