A movie for warhammer?

Recommended Posts

Problem with a TV show is that I think because of the nature of 40k it would need the highest per episode buget of all time. Star Trek ran on a $1 mil per episode buget and the never did anything like real power armour. Then you would have the same kinds of scale issues shooting marines next to normal people that LOTR had with dwarves and hobbits. Not sure anyone would want to tackle that. Maybe the boys over at the BBC doing Doctor Who right now.

No. The BIGGEST mistake would be making it "live action" the absolute BEST medium for it would be pure CGI, and not that crap like the new Star Wars thing, more like the CGI quality of that old Final Fantasy movie (The Ghosts Within) where people were originally calling up to find out who the actress was thinking it was real instead of CGI at first.

Hell, I would put my 3d Skills to work for them for half the industry price just to see it done!

The movie should be shot with a combination of live action and CGI. It needs to come out looking something...like...this (in terms of CGI quality):

Agreed, a Warhammer movie with CGI would be fantastic. I would disagree though that it wouldn't be even better if it was given LOTR style treatment with budget, acting, and special effects and handling of the source material. If done properly a live action 30k movie would be fantastic.

I doubt there is an actor, or even a human, who could play a Space Marine, let alone a Primarch. At least in LOTR hobbits, dwarves, and elves all look essentially similar to real people. Space Marines are just too gargantuan. It wouldn't work to just make someone look taller, like if Gandalf stands next to a hobbit. With a marine, they're not just bigger humans, all their proportions are gargantuan.
I'd rather have it in CGI simply because i cannot think of any actor with a face perfect enough to match an Astartes or Primarch.

Michael Ironside could pull it off but he'd be better as a Commissar or a Guard Colonel

Or even Inquisitor Eisenhorn.

I honestly don’t think space marines are the way to start a movie or a series of movies. The spectrum is to great and that’s a whole lot of fluff to cram into someone’s mind if they have no prior knowledge of 40k. I say they start with the Eisenhorn series. Eisenhorn's retinue is much more identifiable to the general public and the first book Xenos is a fantastic starter into the 40k universe.

I have to agree, Eisenhorn would be the way to go for a movie. Unlike the Horus Heresy, it's self-contained, rather than requiring dozens of really long movies to explain everything.

I mean, with the Horus Heresy, sure you could focus just on Horus, but then you'd leave people unfamiliar with the setting wondering why the hell the other Primarchs turned, instead of "plot requirement".

Awesome as the HH is for those in the know, in the incredibly unlikely event that GW was to make a 40k based film it would make far more sense (from a business perspective at the very least) to start off with something more identifiable than the Astartes. Gaunts Ghosts or Eisenhorn (depending on the kind of movie they were going for) would probably make a more logical starting point.
I agree that a Gaunt's Ghost movie that is live action would be VERY do-able. I think if it were done like Beowulf with the actors wearing those weird crazy suits and having their faces transposed over to the animated bodies. I say this just to make things blend in easier with the background graphics. Does anyone else have anything that might work better than this? I could see Michael Ironside as Gaunt, but who else could be the other people and which novel would you start the whole story? From the beginning of the formation of Gaunt's Ghosts? I think that would be the ideal choice of where to start.
Gaunts Ghosts would work equally as well if done in a Band of Brothers style, as it doesn't require very much background knowledge of the 40k world, even the chaos enemies are never linked to any specific diety.

Incorrect.

The Blood Pact are mentioned early on to be a Khornate Chaos force.

The spin offs could number into the double digits easily. I would dare say that it could be a very well done weekly series if GW would go ahead and let it get developed. Writing for a book and writing for a Television show are VERY different. I am learning that in Screenwriting class at this time. As for getting the 40K universe out to people, I agree that Gaunt's Ghosts would be the one to turn into a show. Chaos marines would have to be in the first episode to show the destruction of Tanith. I forgot which chapter(s) was/were involved in that.

Haven't read it for ages so I'll take your word for it, but they never came across as particularly ott khorne-ish, they have IC snipers for crying out loud :P

The rumours were true..

So the question begs. Is it going to be based on Graham McNeill's Ultramarines books? Or (hopefully) the Battle for Maccragge.

EDIT:

On another note we now have Empirical evidence that GW in fact, does not, read forums.

They tried doing a CGI move years ago, late 90s' if I remember correctly, think it was base on a comic strip called Blood Quest. it got a far as some CG tests, space battle, Ork dread and that was it.

Correct. It was Exile Films and they went under like a ten ton boulder after GW put it on indefinite hold.

if there is (ever) going to be a 40k film, it'll have to be like StarWars A New Hope, a good self contained film, just enough explenatoin to let un-initiated know what's going on, simple story line and nice strong characters, all beat up in less than 120 minutes. not an easy recipey to get right, I've seen some real sh** box turkeys over the years (starship troopers 2+3, I let 1 off because it was entertaining(ish)).
