Strictly speaking, neophytes don't get the cross according to the fluff. But if you want to paint them then this is a good place to look

Hmm, where did you read that? I just read through the codex on the parts about neophytes and couldn't find anything that talked about it. It is somewhere else in the codex that maybe I missed?

Also on the painting guide page it shows the shoulder pad insignias for the different ranks of BT and Neophyte is specifically listed

The first chappy looks "over average"-good. If you've painted the rest in the same quality you'll end up having an army looking better than most i've encountered.

The white parts (shoulders and terminator helms mainly) could be improved upon tho. I'd suggest using a very thin off-white coat over the entire area and see what that give. It won't do anything radical in appearence, more like subtle gradients in the white taking away some of that chalkyness.

i know i need to do a little on the white so as it dosnt look so vibrant. i was thinking of doing what i did with the termie chest eagle that i did in white and shadow it with a dark blue, but i dont know yet if this will work the way i want it to. looks good oh his chest but on the shoulders i think i may have to go with a more earth tone lowlight. i will play around with it and see what works best on more plentiful models than my pride and joy terminator chaplain. i hope to progress in painting soon and i want to try my hand at shading more with the blacks, seems a bit like cheating that all i have to do is spray krylon black on them then just paint a chest eagle some eyes then highlight them. figure i first need to pick where the source of light will be coming from and trying to make maybe some eye glow and plasma glow effects. More pictures to come soon.

:)

those minis are incredible for your first painted i mean wow.. my first painted minis looks more like terminators than regular marines, but shortly after i learnt to water down my paints.. lol

might i suggest trying some highlights on the land raider crusader?, because from the picture there appears to be none (it might just be me),

just a simple drybrush should do the trick :)

Once I get my camera back from my buddy hopefully this weekend I will take some more photos of where I am.

I have started on one of my Sword brethren, the one with the lightning claws and I did a little freehand nothing spectacular on his cape to learn to do it a bit better before i try banners.

I have been painting for years and I wish my first marines looked as good as yours.

learn how to use washes and how to highlight and you will be far along than most of were when we started.

Keep up the good work

Just saw your post !

The dreadnought is my favorite, looks "second-hand" if you see what I mean, I love it.

The assault marine and twin lightning claws guy(I like how you did the cloak) both need more highlight. The chaplain is nicely highlighted, you should do the same with all of them.

I meant the chaplain with the normal face not the skull one.

The guy with the plasma pistol seems to have lost his jumppack... :P ,

Also the termi's helmet is too white, you should try to put some sort of grey on it to give it more depth.

I did the same white hlmets on my assault termies and then i did shooty termies with some grey and they look better IMO

First ones

Recent ones particularly the both guys on the right.

I'm not showing off or anything but I thought it would be clearer with the pics.

If those are your first minis, I can't wait to see more pics from in the future, it's promising !

Good Luck !

Seriously any comments.... like telling me the bathroom lighting blows or anything :S

The lighting blow.

I really like your chaplain (helmetless) and the Dreadnought that looks like he has seen a load of action. Very nice. Some close ups of the paint work on the Dreadnought would be appreciated.

now that i see your minatures in slightly more detail i can offer a little more advice.

Firstly with painting gold, it is clear to me that you have simply slobbed on some shining gold which dosen't loook terrible but can be improved with some technique, heres how i do it.

Step One:

Basecoat Your gold area with Scorched Brown.

Step Two:

Heavily Drybrush the area with a mix 50 - 50 Scorched Brown - Shining Gold

Step Three:

Do Large Highlights with straight Shining Gold

Step Four:

Do Small Highlights with 50 - 50 Shining Gold - Chainmail

Step Five:

Do Extreme Highlights with pure Chainmail (when i say extreme i mean EXTREME)

Also i see you have attempted to do some nice highlights with your robes and capes, looks okay but heres how i do it.

How to paint awesome bone coloured robes

Step One:

Basecoat with Khermi Brown

Step Two:

Heavily Drybrush with 50 - 50 Khermi Brown - Dheb Stone

Step Three:

Highlight With Pure Dheb Stone.

Heres a pic so you can see how the results turned out, along with all 5 paints used.

Excuse my messy drybrushing i was in a rush = )

Also uhh buy a fine detailed brush or perhaps a vice. = )

I dont know if im feeling the stone colored robe personally. And as for the gold it actually is gold then washed in Gyph sepia then highlighted with burnished gold. you cant really see with that lighting but inperson it does give the gold more depth. but i will give you gold a shot and see what the result looks like. I will also try to get a bit more shadows on my termie heads.

From what I can tell your guys are painted to a nice table top standard...nothing award winning but can clearly see the effort and dedication put into your guys. I really like your Chaplain in Terminator armour. Looking forward to seeing some more progress on your crusade and please post up any info on battle reports.

Cheers, Messanger

N.B. some tips on photography that you don't seem to be doing are: turn flash off as it drowns out colour and details, put a piece of white paper behind your guys (make it so it has a curve in it), and use 2 or more desk lamps to provide source of light. Another important thing is to avoid having a light source behind your miniatures as well as avoid leaving paint pots or your next project in the shot as they can affect the quality of the picture. Here is a link to a guide if you have photoshop.
