Greetings one and all...

Lol, thanks Dark Rage. I appreciate it.

So, I'm still working on the Angel of Blades (see my WIP thread), but till that is ready to go, here's a quick and dirty Cypher I painted up.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/RSCN1475.jpg

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/DSCN1466.jpg

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/DSCN1465.jpg

I still love the classic model. Unfortunately, this one had several coats of old paint on it, which I didn't have the wherewithal (nor the patience) to strip. Bearing that in mind, I didn't spend a whole lot of time on it, but I think he looks ok for a rush job.

I have one question for you though - if you've read this thread, you'll know all my Marines (DP, TDA and PA) have black armour. They also wear black robes. I have seen pre-heresy and Fallen DA looking very good with white robes but it's always struck me as unfluffy.

I've been in the hobby since the days of RT and 2nd Ed - before the mysterious 3rd Ed change to green PA. Because of this (HH knightly order fluff aside), in my mind pre-heresy DA should be black on black. That being said, this model made me seriously consider giving him white robes... it might make the armour and his hair pop more.

So, the question... do I leave him as is, or repaint the robes? Any thoughts?

The Angel should be finished by the weekend. I also have a custom Cypher coming - I'll be spending more time on him.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker

I went with gray robes for my own Fallen DA as a way to distinguish them from the black armor.

Thanks for the comments folks. It really helped me with my dithering.

@Teetengee - absolutely. If I paint another classic Cypher, that'll be the rational I use. It occurs to me that I have another back at home (I'm abroad right now), posing as a Chaplain in my Black Templar army. In true Templar fashion, he wears black armour and white robes. I do like the way he looks, but it's just not Fallen to me :D But, if I get enough non-black robes in the army, it could look pretty cool.

@Grand Master Belial - nice looking Fallen you have there, sir.

@ Grand Master Belial & SpiralingCadaver -thanks for the suggestions guys. That is basically what I (attempt to) do already. The armour is highlighted with blues, while I use grey on the robes. Which I think leaves to the solution for my problem...

I need to take better pics, or at least pics in better light.

I took the newly painted Cypher into daylight earlier and actually quite like the way he looks. The detail is delineated quite well, it just doesn't appear in the pics above. I'll try and get some photographic evidence later.

Thanks again for all the comments, I really appreciate the input.

Cheers,

Widowmaker

Edit - And speaking of photos...

Still not brilliant pics, but they're an improvement... and they show the blue vs. grey highlights better.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker.

Great looking Fallen sir!

I have been working on a batch myself. I'm actually staying away from too many robes personally. I want my Fallen to represent the Terran born part of the legion and I figure most of the robe stuff came along once they found their Primarch.

The black on black looks good IMO, I'd stick with it.

Thanks for the comments folks...

@GMB - Cheers! Although to be honest, it's the same highlights, just better lighting.

@CaptainStabby - thanks man. I appreciate it. I look forward to seeing your take on them. Fewer robes could work well...maybe just on the sergeants? Lots of Fallen starting to pop up lately, which is awesome!

@A Kvlt Ghost - cheers buddy! I appreciate it! Always glad to hear when folks think I managed to capture the look and feel of the Fallen properly!

@Thousand Eyes - thanks for commenting - and it took a little longer than planned, but see what you think of this...

My take on Cypher, the Fallen Angel...

Not a million miles from the original, but I think the way he turned out works ok.

Thanks for looking... The Angel of Blades well be up next.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. He was a lot of fun to do. I'm gonna try and lay my hands on the DV Librarian for another conversion... but that'll be sometime in the future.

Almost done with the base of the Angel of Blades... and I've got 2 squads of Fallen on their way as well.

Stay tuned.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker

Alrighty then... are we sitting comfortably?

My last post was eaten by the crash, so I wanted to repost the Angel of Blades. He took a little longer than planned to finish, but I'm pretty happy with the result.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/DSCN1708.jpg

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/DSCN1709.jpg

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/DSCN1711.jpg

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/DSCN1712.jpg

I'm not 100% happy with it... the model itself I like, but

1) I didn't take the heraldry and iconography as far as I'd planned. The arrows on the helbrute chest and onager legs made it more difficult (read painful) than I wanted deal with. I might go back and revisit it though.

2) The base is a lot bigger than I'd planned for, so it feels kinda empty to me. Again, I might go back and redo it, or at least add to it in the future.

I hope you like it. It was fun to work on. Up next will be two squads of Fallen Marines. As always, comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker

PS - if anyone has any thoughts about how I can use the Onager body in a manner befitting the Fallen, ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • 2 weeks later...

@Teetengee - Yeah, I looked at that... unfortunately, I no longer have spare dread legs... they went to my Night Lord Daemon Prince. Also,I think that the body of the Onager might be a little long for it to look good on two legs... I might see if I can find a big tank to put it on. Something orky maybe? I appreciate the suggestion though.

So, if everyone is sitting comfortably, I have an update. It took a little longer than planned to finish these guys, and true to form, as I was cropping the pics I found a whack load of details I missed. However, see what you think.

Apologies that the pics might be a little dark. Weather is not conducive of taking photos today, and in a long way from my light box.

Other than that, as always, comments and criticism are welcome.

@Chronosvulcan597 - cheers mate, I appreciate it.

Greetings folks,

Ok, so I'm back with another installment... a Chaos Lord, and another Chaos squad - 1st squad this time. As before, unfortunately the photos aren't the best. I don't have my light box to hand and I lost the light before taking the pics.

Still, they're good enough for government work...

When I bought it, I truly intended to make the DA Chappy into a true DA Chappy... Unfortunately (or, perhaps, fortunately for my Fallen) somewhere along the line, it morphed into what you see above. What d'ya think?

And individually...

I love the new DA upgrade sprue. I think they give a DA Army an "older" vibe, which coincidentally makes them good for a Chaos army.

As usual, while posting these, I found a bunch of things that I had missed while painting - skulls, arrows, swords, base rims, drilling bolters... the normal. Annoying, but I'll fix them soon.

Probably :D

Anyway, that's all for now. I've got another Fallen Ravenwing squad in the works. Should be up in the next couple of days.

Until then, as always, comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker

Thanks Teetengee, I appreciate it. Glad you like the Chappy conversion.

So, up next is the second of my Ravenwing squads... as before, the photos aren't the best, but they'll do for now...

Having seen them enlarged, I'm less pleased with the heraldry on the shoulder pads. There are also a few bits I see still to do... bolters needing drilled amongst others. Other than that, what d'ya think?

It.... is.... ALIVE!!!!!!!

Thanks Tyrannicide. I will admit to being a little cross eyed by the end of that.

One post per year for this army is pretty poor by any standard, but I've finally got some bitz and, me importantly, some time on my hands so hopefully I might get done work done on these guys.

My (new) local GW is having a "Death from Above" painting competition this weekend, which gave me the excuse to put this guy together.

The photos aren't great in afraid, but you can get a pretty good idea of where I was going with this. I've had the idea for a while now, and I'm pretty pleased with the way he turned out.

Stay tuned for more.

I really like it! What kit is it from?
