Why Horus instead of Dorn?

I seemed to be under the impression that Sanguinius had a bit of a "lamenting" phase when he found out about the Heresy, but I suppose I could be wrong as I freely admit that I haven't read much Blood Angel fluff as the chapter does not aesthetically appeal to me. Also wasn't Sanguinius really into poetry and philosophy and whatnot? Ah well, sorry for impinging upon the honor of you red folk, I understand you must be touchy after your primarch got strangled and tossed aside ;)

Blood Angels generally have an appreciation for art, similar to what the Emperor's Children had, as well as a talent for crafting arty things, but specifically poetry and philosophy and sitting in a dark room because no-one understands you and you just omg have to express your individuality by wearing all black and being sullen...?

Nah, he wasn't that bad! Though I appreciate that him being an angellic goody-goody with wings who likes paintings will get him some flak :P

Anyways, why not Dorn? Because he was a grumpy old geezer - old at heart - completely the wrong man to lead a galaxy-spanning Crusade.

Actually, I see Dorn more as someone who was way, way too hard on himself, almost masochistic. I could more imagine that him being placed in command of the Great Crusade would cause him to burn out pretty fast, blaming and then punishing himself for every setback the crusade encounters.

Yeah, that seems to be one of the most often recurring feelings/comments amongst 'W0H40Kers'. Its no surprise that the pretty boy with wings gets some grief. :P

Myself, I'm more like one of the Baal citizens before being a SM - ugly and twisted. :P

The Blood Angels were originally described as being artistic and appreciative of aesthetically pleasing things (and hence famous--or infamous one might say--for their skills at architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.) because they were meant to evoke a quasi-Italian feel (see their names: Dante, Mephisto, Tycho, Morleo, Corbulo, etc.)... hence the Renaissance-era tie-ins.

Emo, though? No. The Blood Angels and their successors have long been plagued of a fell reputation for savagery in battle, and the Horus Heresy novels imply that these assault-focused Astartes were that way long before Sanguinius died. Sure, the Black Rage and Red Thirst made matters worse, but there's a reason why at one point they are compared to the World Eaters of that era...

Another reason to dismiss the idea that Sanguinious was all "Woe is me, etc."? Look at his homeworld. The new Dark Angels novels have led people to decry Lion El'Jonson for supposedly not caring about the people of Caliban, but consider what we know about Sanguinious. Baal Secundus was a radioactive wasteland that guaranteed a short life of pain, toil and mutation for its inhabitants, but Sanguinious never made a move after being found to alleviate the people who worshipped him of any of their misery. I'm not trying to start an argument here, but Sanguinious actions and favored mode of warfare don't really indicate some sort of "emo" guy.

Cheers,

P.
