Codpiece. ;)

The red eyes look amazing. In the first image, I actually initially assumed that it was a Photoshop effect. Closer inspection revealed it to be painted, of course. Brilliant suggestion of source material, by the way. My only complaint about that mini is that the eyes, being one of the first features one notices in the photograph, set a standard that the rest of the mini doesn't quite live up to. The painting isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn't pop like the smooth, bright eyes you've assembled.

As far as the matter of the hammer goes, I say stick with what you've got. A more ornate hammer would detract from the composition, in my opinion. The simpler hammer lends a tough, businesslike, no-nonsense appearance to your commander.

For this being your first 40k army, you seem to have a good deal of experience with converting and using greenstuff. I didn't think there was as much call for that in LoTR but I guess thats just my mind telling me that out of sheer ignorance.

I especially like the fact that you tossed some terminator arms on a non-terminator model. i did the same thing with my chapter master and really liked the results. You mentioned in the initial post about the wargear not being optimal for a commander, but I've always gone with fashion over function where modeling is concerned, thats probably why I do strange things like giving all my assault terminator squad members thunder hammers and reserving the lightning claws for the sergeant.

And a dreadnought leg armor plate as a shoulder pad? That is sheer genius!

In the minds of a 40k player there is idd not much to convert, since almost all the mini's are one piece. However that never stopped me from chopping my models

Anways, here is the LPC wip pic, 1st one. I vowed to finish at least 1 rhino, 1 Emperor's Champion, 2 magnetized Marshalls/Castellans, 1 Dreadnought, 10 Marines, 5 neophytes and 2 Terminators. There are missing 3 neophytes and 1 Castellan on this picture, but they aren't even build yet, so they will come later on :D

Expect some painting updates this week. Exams are over and I'm free for a lil' over a week.

Damn.. a strong fever got me.. just when I got about 2 weeks off. I recovered a few days ago, and went on painting!

I have a lil more painted (touched up the powerfist dude for example), but the light isn't good atm, so I sticked with these. Enjoy!

I began with a neophyte:

Update on the feet/base of the Dreadnought, almost finished:

And also began on the EC!

Any C&C welcome!

More! More! In the Name of the Holy Emperor WE Demand More!

Are you undercoating white first ... then painting black? Would it not be easier to undercoat black to start with?

Keep up the awesome work! Love the glowing eye lenses on the Initiate.

Thanks guys, if I find the time I will update tomorrow ;)

Well I undercoatED white first. I'm not a fan of black undercoat. Did it before on another system I played (still do, LotR) but never bothered on painting that much. However with this new army I want to focus a bit more on painting, and a light undercoat gives the colors that are not black, a way brighter and warmer feel (if you know what I mean :D). This also saves me the pain of painting 5 layers of Codex Grey or Desert Yellow when painting the whites/bones.

The reason I mentioned 'undercoatED' is because I undercoat Grey now (as you can see on the previous images). I will keep white for very light models, but grey also works very well for the light colors.

I really don't mind paying those extra 3-5 minutes painting the black armor if it gives me nicer colors and saves me the frustration of painting numerous layers to get the lighter colors on!

love the EC, great mix of BT tabard clipped to fit with the DA robes! Only thing I think you should add is give him a shield over his bolter, or use a bolter shield hand. That will truly be more epic.

and where is the sword from again? I can't seem to place it

Sword is from the WFB Empire General.

They are really nicely painted love the face by the way what bases are you using ?

Thanks! The bases are from Scibor.

Days are still very dark, I come home late and I don't have a good light setup. So until I can finely post some pictures in daylight you peeps have to do with the slightly worse photos! :)

This pic shows the bone a lil better, as the face. As you can see the Chainsword isn't yet finished here

Recent pics with finished sword:

I really like painting this model. It isn't finished yet but I have done some things I haven't done on other miniatures before. The face is done on another method then I previously did (and the result is very good!), I have done the yellow/black Chainsword and have already tried some weathering on the base to let it look more interesting. He's almost done (perhaps one more hour of work) and then I can focus on the EC!

Neophyte is finished! I will add some static grass/high grass, but not until I have finished some marines.

Other pics will come up soon, my brother is a few days on a trip and needed the cam, so I didn't fixed any photo's yet of the WiP marines. On a side node.. the Dreadnought base/legs frosted when varnished.. :P I will try to fix that tomorrow.. bah first time this happened to me.

Oh btw, I will do some freehand on the scroll/tabard thingy, but I just couldn't get my head to do that right now. I will leave the shoulderpads blanc though ;)

Thanks ;)

While I update my blog with minor painting updates more often, I thought I might aswell update this thread aswell, even though I have bad pics this time.

So the EC is still on hold, I want to finish some initiates first, then I can paint the EC, as a reward! Since I'm no real batch painter, I think I can push myself this way to paint them marines!

So, after debating some on the club, I'm going along with the GT this year. As I'm not the fastest painter on the planet, I will focus on the GT from now on, still have plenty to do! My goal is to get atleast a nominee for the Best Painted Army, winning it would be best though, although that might be just to high.

So here are the 4 initiates I'm working on atm, the lightning isn't best, but I didn't do my best on that part. I hope I can update it on the end of the week, but as I'm going to get a surgery tomorrow.. I'm not sure :ermm:

The tabards still need some highlights, ah well, any C&C welcome!

Well the tabards do look better in RL, it really is the lighting in the pic. Other then that, the tabards aren't finished yet. You will see in a few days (I hope.. depends on my recovery!)

Thanks :P

I am planning to do a tutorial on the tabards on my blog, but that will come with the next batch. The recipe is simple, Graveyard Earth to Bleaced Bone, only these 2 colors are involved. As you see on the pic the pure BB hasn't come yet, the last highlight on the tabard was 1:2 iirc.

Wow... some seriously stellar posing and painting both, my friend. I love the cloth work on the tabards and the neophyte's pants. As a guy who just can't stand to leave his models without some personal touch to them... and usually going over board, I'm loving your work so far. Definitely paying attention to this thread.

Hey thanks FireLizard :o

So, recovery is going good from the hospital. While I can't go to work or school atm, I found some time to paint a lil' bit more on the marines. Also did some more modelling, but didn't take a pic of those. First off, the marines!

As you can see I painted the back of the tabards red ;)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/sleepybear/Image83.jpg

So, the shoulderpads aren't totally finished yet. One more highlight of white needs to be done, so are some details on the pads themselves. Here pics of 2 of the Right 'Veteran' shoulderpads, the termie pads that I stuck on some of the initiates. Couldn't help myself when I saw them, just wanted to give some of the initiates a more 'bad ass' look. I know the BT's don't do stuff like veterans in squads, but what the heck, my guys are doing it!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/sleepybear/Image4-6.jpg

I hope to get started on other marines soon, as atm I'm quite fed up with these.. since I've done quite allot wrong (modelling wise). These 4 were mainly to figure out the colours. Things I learned are that you don't want to glue the backpacks on already, and I'm leaving the shoulderpads off as well on the next batch of marines (that way I can also prime black! :P).

Any C&C welcome!

Seeing that I have to make pics for the LPC, I might as well post these pics here as well. I have stepped from the OSL on the lenses, I want to do some 'helmet paintings' on the marines, and I tried it with the OSL but that didn't looked that well. So I just let go off the OSL and go with normal lenses (as seen on middle boltermarine).

I haven't finished the 4 tabard marines yet, but I just wanted to get started on the other 4 marines. I haven't attached them to a 'holder' which I regret now.. I just couldn't wait yesterday to paint them. Ah well, almost finished. The lenses on other 3 marines and the Powerarmor and these guys are finished.
