How to paint an electrically charged powersword

Ok, first you need these (citadel) coulours: chaos black, regal blue, ice blue, skull white, hawk turquoise, and dark angels green.

Alright then, Step 1:

After basecoating your sword with chaos black, mix up a 1:1 mix of regal blue and ice blue and paint your initial lines

Make sure to keep the lines thicker than you intend to, since you will have to paint inside of them later on. Make sure you think out a pattern which will make sense, as well. For the pictures here, I used an electrical-looking pattern, with many jagged edges and sharp angles. I will post an alternative pattern at the end of the article.

Step 2: Apply pure ice blue within the original lines which your have just panted

make sure to keep your paint thin and try and cover the lines in two coats or so, just to keep things clean (you will notice I could have done a better job at this, but I've recently been slammed with tons of work lately...)

Step 3: Highlight the lines with a 1:1 mix of ice blue and skull white, making sure to paint where multiple lines intersect, as they would logically be brightest, as well as any significant details in the sword (for my sword, i paid attention to the runes)

Step 4: With a glaze of 1:1 hawk turquoise to dark angels green, paint over the entire sword

Step 5: Apology in advance for no photo of this side when it is finished, my camera just died... I'll post this sword from the other side. Anyways, just highlight the places listed in step 4 with pure skull white, barely more than a dot at the intersections. Keep it THIN!

Alternatively, this pattern is more mellow, like water in a way; this is here just to give you other ideas.

These are all nifty, but I think they'd be more suited to a force sword, or force weapon. Keep up this nice paintin'!

Thanks for the great tutorial. I've struggled in the past to paint this. Especially seeing the Eavy Metal version shown in the Space Hulk edition of white dwarf. Within 15 minutes of trying the steps i have got far far better results than previous attempts!

That's always such a gorgeous technique, it works with so many colours too!

I'm gonna try and upload pics on the mirror/crystal swords I'm doing, one in every colour of the rainbow!

They look so cool and you can use any colour you like!

Great work dude!

A glaze is very thin paint (sometimes with a specific medium - eg Vallejo's glaze medium, though just water is fine) applied very thinly - sort of like a wash, but using far less paint on the brush and spreading it out rather than allowing it to pool in recesses.
