Showcase: Terrain, Scenery, and Fortifications

Recommended Posts

I scratchbuilt this piece a couple of months ago. I made the steps of the stairs big enough so a round base could fit. A bit more peaceful part of the grim darkness of the far future :P. Sorry for the bad pictures, it's a combination of poor lightning and a bad camera.

That's a nice bunch of terrain - I smiled at the space marine outpost obviously being heavily inspired by the buidings and structures in the Dawn of War video games.

Had you meant this to be a general showcase for terrain for all posters to use, or just for your terrain?  Either is fine, but if it is the latter we should change the title to remove the word "showcase" - that term is typically reserved at B&C for threads in which any member to  is encouraged to post their work.

Not inspired, they are the buildings from the DOW video games, war scenery has them all, imperial guard, space marines, sisters of battle etc....

For everybody, i am interested to see what others have come up with. like i said having been into the hobby for more than 20 years all my armies are pretty much complete so i am really focused on terrain now.

Adding to that....here is the war scenery imperial guard defense line/bunker and aquila strongpoint sets-

I really dig those Dawn of War structures, they give a decent sense of scale when you're mostly familiar with ruined corner sections. In the games when a Leman Russ pops out of a factory almost the same size as it it looks a bit daft but when looking at it from the perspective of cover that terrain looks pretty imposing.

Also as an aside that Monsterpocalypse table looks great. I only recently heard of the game but it's one of the non-GW games I've been really curious about and that's mainly due to it's miniatures.

That scenery is fantastic. I'd love to print some stuff like that but for some reason I've been struggling to get the prints to work properly lately.

A little different layout for the strongpoint for todays game-

And how it looks when overrun by demons and chaos word bearers ala 3.5 edition chaos codex in our 5th ed hybrid games facing salamanders (5th) with allied demon hunters.

the demonic incursion is real.

Any tips for doing similar?

I'm making another tile now, so I'll take some photos tonight and start up a thread if I remember.

But overall, any areas painted grey for concrete, that is xps foam. The buildings/shacks are foamcore. Much use of corrugated card for making roofs/scrap metal. Mixed in some MDF (mainly walkways) and a few bits of GW kits. thick card (cant remember the exact name of it now) was used to make the steel girders, edging and detailing, along with some plaster casts of random pipes and detailing.

Each tile was then painted/sealed with a modgepodge and tile grout mix to seal it all and give some texture. Then the entire piece was sprayed black, dark brown, dark red, silver (each layer getting less). Then It was a sepia and burnt umbra (and a splash of yellow) put into a cup of water to make a filthy wash that was liberally pasted over the entire thing.

That gave the base over which I painted the gray concrete, and then identified anything that was being painted to break up and give some spot colours. These were sponged with a latex masking stuff. Once that was dry, I used art acrylic paints (bright ones) to do the colours, then when it was dry you rub the latex mask off and that gives the rust/worn look, which then had streaks of rust applied around/below using the same burnt umba/sepia wash as before.

Finally it was details picking out, grafiti added and posters to give that lived in feel.

Oh, this was all spawned from watching Eric's hobby workshop on youtube, he made a single video about creating a shanty town underhive thing, which I loved and made me want to do similar, so I started with the left corner tile as a version inspired by his vid, and the rest grew from there

A quick shot from a (very dramatic) Kill Team game over the weekend, showing the back 1/2 of a terrain piece, as well as a custom objective marker I made.
