Imperial Fists WIP

My only complaint is that they are too well painted. Strip them and start from scratch.

I really love the yellow. It has a lot of contrast and warmth to it, and the red looks just as nice. The fully faced flesh head doesn't look as nice as the one with the mask. Something about the mouth and nose just looks a tad off. Then again, I dislike most fully fleshed faces.

Care to shed some light on how you painted your yellow? Did you use an airbrush to spray on the basecoat of the yellow? I just ordered one and I am waiting for it to come in. I'm going to try out Starks333 technique that he did on his Desert Scorpion army, and I was wondering if I could test out your method if you did, in fact, use an airbrush for the yellow.

Yeah the basecoat was done with an airbrush. It's two thin coats of GW Golden Yellow. It's over a GW Skull White Spray undercoat. Then onwards with the brush.

It's awesome to get the basecoat done with so u can get down to the business of shading and highlighting.

I'm a bare head fan! All except for the One that comes with the Rhino!

Btw Alpha, the full yellow method I used is in an earlier post on this thread. Cheers.

More WIP of my GB entry. Jump pack is almost finished except fr the purityseals and stuff.

Almost done now.

Been having second thoughts today though about scrapping the whole thing. I've been looking at the same mini for too long!

Might see if I can finish off my chaplain and then decide which to enter.

Anyways here's where i'm up to. Just need to finish the head and a couple of touch ups here and there. C&C welcome as always!

(sorry for the pic heavy post again, i really need to get off my butt and start resizing my pics!)

IT looks fantastic, and the chrome on the servo-skull is superb!

Now, to be as super critical as possible :) .....

1.) The banner/scroll things on top of the jump pack are too static, and do not seem to be moving with the model.

2.) The helmet seems out of place in such a non-static pose. If he were charging into combat, or running, why would he be carrying his helmet and not his pistol?

3.) How are you going to paint the inside of the helmet with such things as HUD's and other techno-goodies?

Commander Alexander:

1. Agree with u 100%. Don't know why I added those.

2. Again, agree with u. I think I couldn't decide between a bare head or a helmet and so went with both ;)

3. Haven't totally figured that one out yet. I guess with the helmet off, it's possible that the HUD is switched off?

Thanks for the feedback mate, I appreciate it. The things you've brought up have been bugging me for a while but I should have given them more thought before putting paint to them!

I am glad that you can take the (hopefully) constructive criticism, especially from someone who can only dream of painting to your degree . And those comments were me trying to be as critical as possible, because I am sooooooooo jealous and impressed by your painting skills, and it truly is a beautiful model.
So I have to say that this is THE best representation of yellow I have seen in my twelve years of gaming. Its so rich and beautiful and I cant stop looking at your models. I have one question to ask of you... I would really love to use this color set up but for a Howling Griffons or if I decide Imperial Fists project I have stirring so I must ask if you can tell us how you achieved the red. Keep up the amazing work!

Hey all,

Thanks for all the kind words and constructive feedback.

I've finished now and i'll be sending the pics in tonite, so hopefully i can stop worrying about any changes i should make or whatever! B) These r the pics i'm sending. They're from my iPhone, but its all i've got to take photos.

A couple of you asked about how i did the red and the thrusters, so for anyone insterested, here it is.

Red:

It's just basically P3 Khador Red Base (or GW Blood Red) for a basecoat.

Then highlighted by adding more and more P3 Menoth White Base (or GW Bleach Bone although it's a tad lighter in colour).

The chest eagle (and any other red sections that require deeper shading) are shaded down with VGC Terracotta (or any earthy red) and then the deepest recesses shaded down with RMS Imperial Purple (or any dark purple you like)

Any lining can be done with watered down RMS Deep Red.

Jumppack thrusters:

Over white u/coat, basecoat with VGC Foul Green. (not sure what a GW equivalent would be)

Shade down with RMS Burnt Orange. (or any kind of dull orange tone)

Shade down with RMS Blushing Rose (basically any sort of redish flesh tone).

Highlight with VGC Foul Green adding RMS Ice Grey (any sort of cooler white will do) until you basically get to pure Ice Grey for the spot highlights.

As you can tell, I use mainly Vallejo and RMS paints, but there are GW equivalents of everything that will work just as well. Just need to work out the right water:paint ratios for whatever paint u use.

Cheers!
