Rise of the Imperium (formely Rise of the Emperor)

The ‘Octavius’ was a like a blue spear through the void of space, its massive size however was nothing compared to the star that illuminated it. The insignia that decorated the mighty Battle Barge showed that it belonged to the Ultramarines Legion. Several smaller vessels surrounded the Octavius, the strike cruisers escorting the warship to the rendezvous point. In the distance silhouetted against a distant planet were seven ships, the biggest of which was only marginally larger than a Strike Cruiser, their Xenos design a world apart from their Imperial counterparts. Behind them the faint outline of objects could be seen orbiting the distant planet, the defence installations had their weapons trained on the Astartes fleet no doubt.

“The ‘Ravens Claw’ is soon to drop out of the warp and the ‘Spear of Terror’ will follow suit. Guilliman turned around and looked at Tigurius whose head was wreathed in the energies of the warp. The Chief Librarians face was like stone as he manipulated the warp to do his bidding.

“Thank you Tigurius, we will wait before we approach the Tau fleet.” Guilliman replied, placing his hands on the rail, looking out through the viewing screen.

“Sire, my I speak?” asked Cato Sicarius.

“As you wish” Roboute nodded.

“This… This whole thing is… Stupid, Sire. With respect, we are warriors, not diplomats and these Tau have dared to encroach upon the Imperial space for too long! And now you wish to broker a peace treaty?” Sicarius ranted, his knuckles turning white as he squeezed the metal rail.

“You would question my Wisdom? The wisdom of the Emperor too?” Guilliman asked, still staring at the distant planet.

“No, never sire…” Guilliman waved his arm silencing the Captain.

“I know what you’re saying Captain but think about it this way. There are for my pressing threats facing the Imperium; the barbaric Ork and the swarm like Tyranids and then there are those who have turned from the light of my Father. Why do we seek to make enemies at every corner and over stretch our military forces? Would it not make sense to discuss a treaty or negotiate with a race that is willing to enter into such things? We can contain them whilst we deal with more pressing matters.” Guilliman looked directly at Cato, who met his Primarchs gaze and could not help feeling so small in the presence of his gene-father.

Cato bowed his head in acknowledgement. Outside in space where there was nothingness before there were two more Battle Barges; one was as black as space itself with a white Raven emblazoned across the ship at various locations. The next ship was a midnight blue, a colour that reminded Sicarius of Calths deadly blue star. Real space was cut open as the mighty war vessels

Guilliman turned around a look of worry etched across his face, Tigurius was the first to notice.

“What is it my Lord?” the Chief Librarian asked.

“My brother, Curze. He is unpredictable and his temper uncontrollable. You would do well to remember that” Guilliman warned, looking at the 2nd Captain.

“Shall I alert the rest of the companies?”

Guilliman chuckled slightly, “No you need not fear for Curze Is no wild beast but such outbursts as earlier may not go down too well with my brother.”

***

"I cannot believe you would consort with Xenos! Nor can I fathom as to why!" snarled Konrad Curze, ignoring Roboute’s outstretched hand. The Night Haunter was menacing, fear and terror incarnate, his armour still bored evidence of fighting, the Primarchs armour was a finely crafted and baroque suit of armour. However there were no gold furnishings or parchments; the only other colour than the deep blue was red. Sicarius could imagine the sheer terror Konrad invoked within an enemy and was thankful he was a loyal son of the Emperor.

Guilliman remained impassive, ignoring his brother’s insult and jibes, his gaze now focused upon the Thunderhawk as it approached the Octavius’s embarkation deck. Twenty Honour Guard of the Ultramarines First stood to attention, each held an Axe of Ultramar; relic blades of an age gone by. Their artificer armour glinted of the star light, the Banner of Macragge fluttered gently as distant fans buffeted air. The whine Thunderhawk engines filled their ears as the Raven Guard craft landed upon its landing skids, with a loud ‘clang’ the exit ramp descended and in one stride Corax had walked down it, ten figures clad in armour, the White Raven stood out on their shoulder guards.

“Welcome aboard the Octavius brother; it is good to see you again” said Guilliman, the two Primarchs shared a warriors hand shake. Corax’s black suit of armour clashed with the Lord of Macragge’s armour that’s by comparison could be viewed as ostentatious at worst, splendid, exquisite, well-crafted, beautiful and a dozen more words at best. The gold Aquila filled his breast plate, a reminder of the favour he held with his Father, a fact that caused tension and resentment with some of his brothers; a fact he ignored.

“Konrad” Corax nodded in acknowledgment.

“Greetings” Curze replied.

Even saying a simple greeting the Night Lords Primarch sounded menacing mused Sicarius, as if he had trouble restraining his darker side. Unease fell over the Captain. He looked onwards as the Primarchs stood together, even from this distance he could feel and see the tension between his own gene-father and Konrad.

He felt the Honour Guard stiffen as the warriors -if that’s what they could be called- that accompanied became more evident. “The rumours of the Weregeld were true then” he thought to himself. Corax looked directly at him, as if penetrating his soul.

“Do not look upon my Sons as monsters Captain for in us all there lurks some thing dark.”

Sicarius took a step forwards, “They are aberrations Lord Corax, a crime against the works of the beneficent Emperor!”

In one graceful leap Corax was in front of Sicarius, the Captain had no time to react as he was hoisted into the air by his neck.

“Do not lecture me on my Fathers works, boy” Corax spat, “Do not insult my legion or its warriors who have shed blood in the name of the Imperium and Emperor”.

“That will be enough Corax, I will not allow you to shed the blood of any of my warriors; especially in my presence” growled Guilliman. With that Sicarius fell to the floor, clutching his neck.

“And do not think that you will not be chastised appropriately Captain” casting an angry look at him.

Konrad smirked, “I thought your legion was famed for is discipline?”

Guilliman ignored the jibe, “Shall we head for my chambers? There is much to discuss.” suggest Roboute.

“And who made you Warmaster?” Curze snapped.

“He is right, the quicker this charade is over the quicker we can get back to our legions and the war against the Tau scum” Corax exclaimed.

“You think I do not wish to make war?” Guilliman asked rhetorically.

The Night Haunter snorted with laughter “Ha, you’re no warrior! you’re a diplomat and bureaucrat, the likes that would have made Malcador proud. Whilst you have been sitting in Ultramar playing Empires our legions have shed blood!”.

“Is that so?” Guilliman took a step forwards, anger in his voice.

Curze smiled, delight in his eyes as he provoked Guilliman; one of the only beings to have ever done so. He took up a combat stance. The Ultramarines Honour Guard encircled their Lord, their weapons raised against the Night Haunter. “Even now you let others fight your battles. I would slay you fools before you had even realised!” Konrad laughed.

“Stand down Marines” Guilliman commanded.

Curze smiled even more now, preparing himself for combat. His face was as stern as stone and his voice like thunder, “ Do not mock me Konrad” he warned.

“Or what? Will you sign for my death? Have the Custodes hunt me down?” he mocked.

“That is the line Brother, do not cross it”

“Going to run to Daddy now are we?” Konrad’s menacing and chilling laughter boomed around the embarkation deck. Curze’s pupils had were diluted and his iris was red; the Night Haunter was in control now. Guilliman cared not, no one would insult his Father, the Emperor.

He took another step towards Konrad, his clenched fists white. Curze continued to smirk, Sicarius felt a shiver of unease run down his spine.

"No matter what we protect out Lord" Sicarius commanded over the vox-net. Twenty Honour Guard sent confirmation chimes to him. Corax stood between the two arguing Primarchs, "konrad, Roboute calm yourselves; you know fighting will not solve anything".

"Perhaps not but it will make me feel better" laughed the Night Haunter, pursing his lips and narrowing his eyes; studying the Ultramarines Primarch. Corax remained statue like between the two Primarchs, unwilling to move and let blows commence. The Ultramarines Honour Guard had now formed up behind their Primarch and once again raised their weapons in preparation for a fight. Corax snorted and returned to his Stormbird with his 'Honour Guard'.

"Even your own men doubt your abilities" Curzed taunted, " they think they you need protecting from me". A wave of fear rippled outwards from the Night Lord Primarch, the Honour Guard took a step backwards as it overwhelmed them. Konrad laughed sadistically.

Guilliman stepepd forwards his sword already unsheated, sparks flew as Aieglus met Curze's talons. The Primarchs twisted away and struck again, more sparks flew as the weapons hit one another. In mere seconds dozens of blows were exchanged, neither Primarch unable to land a blow. The Ultramarines looked on in awe as Guilliman and the Night Haunter moved with such speed and precision, the pair seemed to fight without effort.

Roboute feigned a lunge to Konrad's abdomen, as Curze brought his left Talon to block Guilliman surged forwards and threw his brother off his feet. Quicker than anyone anticipated Guilliman was ontop of Curze and had already laned a nose breaking punch.

Night Haunter laughed as he dug his Tlon into Guillimans left side, the Primarch didn't even flinch as the Talon bit his flesh. In return Guilliman began to throttle Curze, his strength suprised his brother. Konrad withdrew his Talon slowly, Roboute growled and grabbed the blood covered Talon and ripped if off. His right hand was still around his brothers neck, although the force had been weakened by Konrads grip on his forearm.

"It seems we are at some what of a stalemate brother" exclaimed Guilliman.

"Going to give in? Too weak to deliver the final blow?" hissed Curze.

"I do not wish to kill you Konrad" Roboute let go of his brother and got to his feet, offering a hand for Kurze.

The Night Haunter batted the hand away, "Mercy is for the weak" he spat.

"An attitude like that will lead people to hate you" frowned Roboute.

"Let them hate, so long as they fear." Curze smiled.

I lied somewhat, i hope you do enjoy and i hope to get back into the swing of things.

Yay, it's back on, one thing though, it seemed as though one moment corax was trying as hard as he could to stop them from fighting, and the next he just kind of shrugged and thought "What the hell" before letting them fight
Yeah Nacho i was trying to get it across that he did care but then they weren't listening and he has more important issues than stopping their 'fight'. Thanks for the comments and also i've been here a wee while too and had this idea for 4 years ;) Anyways i'll try post a teaser tonight.

Great minds think alike, eh? ;)

Honestly, I really like your version of the story. Mine was to have all of the primarchs, loyal and traitor alike, come back to life in human form and, in a second Battle of Terra, they all reunite to face a common enemy. On the brink of annihilation, the Emperor comes back to life, and he reunites the brother-primarchs and their legions, and they defeat the enemy. Lame in comparison to your plot twists and teasers. Though, I have to say, after 32 pages of teasers, I was about ready to hunt you down and run you over with a Land Raider. =P

Keep up the great writing!

Yeah, you and your Wolves? My Iron Brothers will destroy you... With Marneus Calgar leading them, they can't lose

And hurry up on the chapter, I'm running low on reading material

Lets see, the entire assemblage of the Space Wolves Chapter versus your young, short-toothed pups... Bring it on :P

I resent that! Half of my Chapter are veterans anyways- Terminators, vanguard, stern guard, honor guard. Those Wolves have no tactics... They'll be dead before I lose my first Termie squad =P

PS: Keep the chapters coming!

You do realise that Grey Hunters are described as 'battle-hardened veterans' by the Codex? But I think we should steer this debate away from this topic...

Next one, I request one involving the Wolves.

I agree with Skirax, have Russ fighting alongside Jondson, then after the battle ends, Russ and Jonson fight!

Here is a teaser; please enjoy.

"You should have killed him Roboute" those cold words echoed throughout his head. "You know he is a liability, an unstable psychopath who'll only jeopardise the Emperors vision. It is you who are the greatest of your brothers, your mind knows no limits and your skills unrivalled, perhaps even greater than your false Emperors?" the voice was smooth and soothing, as if caressing the Primarch. The ethereal voice took on a more sinister and angry tone, " Twice now the position of Warmaster which is rightfully and deservedly yours has been passed onto your much unworthy siblings. Twice your skills and loyalty has been spat on".

Guilliman stood alone on the embarkation deck, the spine chilling and insidious voice washed over him.

Very good, but one thing, and this may be smoothed over in the full version, but; the 'Daemon' (I take it) blatantly calls the Emperor a 'false' one. Maybe, they wouldn't do that, but make it so that it's subtley hinted at.

Also, look at it like this:

I make the Emperor look weak, false, so he doesn't deserve the position of Emperor. This makes Roboute think that, the Daemon calling him stronger than him, makes it seem very obvious that the Daemon is right.

Now, I make the Emperor look extremely mighty, and by saying that Roboute is stronger makes him seem incredibly strong.
