Ultramarine Honor Guard "3D"

Ok so I have gone through and revised some elements of the leg:

 

1. I have removed the strange shaped panel on the left hand side of the upper leg armour in favour of a panel line using a normal map.

 

2. I beefed up the lower shin armour and moved the knee pad up to compensate.

 

3. I have done some more work on the armour. I think this is close to how I want it to look but I'm still not 100% happy with it. cant really pin down why there is just something about it I don't like.

 

Comments, Ideas, musings all welcome.

So, update!

 

I have finished all the basic armour colour. There is still the details like scratches and a little damage to go on. I also haven't really done anything with the gold bits apart from make them goldish. At the moment I have just mirrored the same texture over so its the same symbols on each side as well.

 

There will also be normal maps to come as its all very flat at the moment.

 

I have been playing with the helmet colour, any thoughts. Also need some help for Ideas about what I should do with the knees/Knee pad and shoulder Icons. I was thinking about a 3d decoration for one of them not sure what yet though.

out of personal tastes, cause he's an honour guard, i'd make his chapter icon on his shoulder pop out like the metal UM pads, and maybe do the same for the symbols on his knees.

i know that stuff on the vanguard/sternguard models tends to be made 3D.

additionally, some grenades, and a CCW; either a knife with an ornate handle, or, a pistol with a fancy holster with an eagle wing instead of a skull like the SM commander box comes with, would fill out minor details on his armour.

and referencing the vanguard again, you could put tiny trim studs on things like the gauntlets and kneepads and stuff too, and a little 3D skull on the back oh his hands.

Thanks for the Ideas. I think you are right about adding some studs to pieces. I also think I will give a 3d shoulder logo a go as well.

 

For now I have just been playing with the shoulder trim to try and get an Idea of how much pattern to add to it.

WOW just WOW, that is SOOOOO cool! your work so far is amazing keep it up! if i could make some suggestions i'd offer that you give him a terminator honors on his right shoulder pad, and maybe a power weapon and a pistol or another close combat weapon of some time like a short blade or shield. Also i don't know how familiar with 40k you are but purity seals are sort of on tons and tons of space marines so maybe some purity seals on the shoulder pads, cheast eagle. and/or the outside of the calfs or any combination of those places or maybe some i can't think of cause Honor Guard would have earned alot of battle honors. i've added a picture of the ultramarines chapter master and his honor guard to show you what i was talking about with the weapons and purity seals and theres some other details they have modeled on there

Thanks for the Ideas, Does anyone have a good image of the symbol for Terminator Honors? I'm suspecting that its quite complex.

 

I'm planning on adding all the purity seals at the end. Mostly because they will need to drape over bits of it and I need to pose it first. They are relatively fast to do though so there will lots of them trust me!

 

I'm also planning on weapons at some point. I will probably get going on them soon, I thinking probably a power Axe, you don't see a lot of them.

 

I think you are probably right about something on the outside of the shin guard though. Maybe an eagle of some kind.

 

Unfortunately his back is bit lacking at the moment. I do have a backpack done but a lot of the small technical bits haven't got any kind of texturing or detail so its a bit bland. Basically just a blue box. I will see about getting a shot if it soon though.

 

For now I have done a first pass on making the U symbol 3D.

Hold on, ill take a pic of the honors shoulder pad for you, give me 5 minutes to upload it ^_^

 

Edit: Here you go, its in mid dry brush so if you need a clearer image I'll change the pic when it's been painted up properly.

Thanks for the Image Mr.Millar I will give it a go, I think its time to properly finish the skull off. It needs a load of details sculpted into it but at least I can use it all over the place once its done!

 

Brother Mordeus, Its made in Maya and the texture work is done in Photoshop, used Crazy bump to make the Normal maps from the photoshop textures, Its basically just an image conversion tool for Normal maps. I will also be doing some work in Mudbox. I would love to see a game with this in but unfortunately having worked on a few I can tell you that the 3D art element is the easiest part to do at least from my limited programming knowledge :)

Beautiful work on the shoulderpad! The raised icon looks great, as does the weathering. I remember reading somewhere that Crux Terminator honours are all different for each suit of armour, with the officers having more detailed and decorated ones. Not only do they differ from chapter to chapter, but from marine to marine too. So you can add a few of your own designs, to make it more unique ^_^

Just a quick update, I have changed the shoulder pad trim so that its less noisy. I also added a gold material to some of the other gold elements to try and give an idea of what they may look like. The back pack and Crux Terminator honours for the weekend hopefully.

 

Brother Ducarte, I will indeed be able to pose it fully. I will also do some kind of scene for the background and probably some combat effects as well. At the moment I'm thinking about a pose with an axe in the right hand at a slight rest with him firing a plasma pistol into the distance wile starting on some rubble with the camera looking slightly up. A nice heroic pose. I'm open to ideas for setting and poses some of the minis here have amazing poses!

It looks like the armor in the groin area is pretty flat. Any way to round it off a bit more. Aside from purity seals, I'd like to see some prayers or art work inscribed on his shoulder pads.

So I haven't had much time to work on it of late, I have started to play with some of the smaller elements and the other shoulder as well as some detail work. I think I'm going to pose it next before I continue to far with all the finishing details.

 

If people have suggestions on pose now is the time?

Awesome art work. Just 3 things I noticed.

1. The left foot looks like his shoe is on the wrong foot.

2. The gauntlets are too small. They need to be seriously beefed up.

3. The Groin aarea need to be more like a cod piece with more expansion joints so the guy can atually walk.

 

Love the weathering and battle damage. And the gold is awesome. Wish I could paint gold like that.

I can certainly give you a copy but to be honest it not really for animations, It comes in at 160,000 polys unsmoothed and its not even finished :D

 

So An update, I'm now in the process of tidying it all up so that I can pose it. I reworked the chest armour and details a bit as well adding some other details to help make it less cymetrical.
