Ultramarine Honor Guard "3D"

Well to be honest It was going to be a space wolf to begin with, I got as far as doing the head then after doing the armour for a bit I kind of lost interest. I was planning on getting a couple of models for some ideas and reference but it was right before the new release and there was basically nothing in the local shop.

Who knows I might revisit it when I'm done. It would go a lot faster now that I have laid all the ground work.

So we are nearing the end I have finally started on the chainsword!

Its still quite basic no weathering or anything really just some basic colours and a little detail work.

I'm afraid at the moment it doesn't animate, It would probably need some slight changes if it was going to have the blades move round. I might do it after I finish this or if I fell the need for a break :P

Anyway Updates!, I have started the actual texture work!

A question from a 3d artist lacking a bit of texture know-how; how do you go about making that awesome metal texture? I assume it's alot of photoshop work, or do you use a base texture to start from?

Well yes its basically a lots of layers in photoshop but it's really not that complicated to be honest, just lots of layer blends.

I get most of the images I use from http://www.cgtextures.com/index.php

Its free and they have loads of metal and rust and other similar things. One trick is to just drop a whole massive metal texture over it then get another image that is all rusty and just the magic wand to selct some of it then use that selection to delete bits from the first metal texture.

Reading that back it sounds a bit confusing. If you want I will do a little tutorial on it showing the basic trick that I used for the whole thing.

No, what you say makes sense. In my previous models, the textures have been 100% photoshop; no base images at all. I'll take a look, see what I have that can be re-textured easily; try your method of things.

Can't believe I didn't think of it, to be honest. Cheers :)

So only a small update, I merged the weapons in to see how they would sit with the rest of the armour. I also smoothed it this time.

Still need to fix up the hands and I think now that I need to do something with the edge of the thigh armour, Its very plane it probably needs some detail texture in there of some kind.

Enjoy!

I'm speechless. Last time I checked this thread I was very impressed, now I'm slack-jawed in amazment. I cannot find a single thing to say is wrong with this. My particular favourite part just now though... the plasma pistol. Just how I'd imagine one looking after firing of a few bolts

Can't wait to see what you do next

  • 8 months later...

So after a massive break in which life and all kinds of things got in the way I have finally decided its time to finish it so that I can move on. To this end I am reworking the textures because I was never really happy with the armour. This is the newest in progress shot. Its all still there but most of it doesn't have textures on it. Some bits will have the same ones, namely the gold bits but the rest will end up being redone to have more detail to them.

I think looking back that they where to blurry and blobby not much more than just a dirty blue colour.

As always all comments and suggestions are welcome, I really am going to finish it this time :teehee:

My only niggle is mostly one from a fluff perspective. The Honor Guard are part of the 1st company and so therefore should have white detailing, not gold like 'Eavy Metal's minis. Basically, the head and the shoulder trims should be white, with some other white emblems thrown in here and there.

Great work on the model itself I must add!

Thanks for the kind words, I think now I am going to repose him anyway, I don't think I will ever get a background done so ill probably just make some form of dark room kind of render to just show him off.

I had a look at the mod, it looks cool its the original dawn of war right? I would say I would join but to be honest Ive tried to work on mods before and ended up lose interest, its hard when its your day job as well :)

@Scathainn, ah I assume Ive seen the ones they painted up to go with Calgar, are they not correct? Its a shame really I would like to be accurate but Ive designed a lot of it be gold now it might look unbalanced if I change it to white.. I will maybe give making the helmet white a go. It could look OK if its a bit dirty and worn.

Ive just about managed to get get most of the main armour work done, just the colour map for now so no bumpy details or nice highlights and stuff but its getting there.

As far as the shoulder pad goes, those models are older than the gold for second company convention. And they're the bosses of their chapter, they can do whatever they want. I love the render, and wish I could stay focused long enough to re-figure out 3d modeling, you're an inspiration dude.
