LPC: Angels Sanguine

As per my vow in the Librarium Painting Challenge, here’s my first WIP for an Angels Sanguine Land Raider. The Redeemer variant isn’t currently a legal choice for the BA’s but I’m hoping that will change in a few months. Regardless, I’m going to magnetize the weapon options along the way – it never hurts to have swappable options for larger model.

I’m going to spend a good amount of time adding “character” to the interior – stowed gear & maybe even a sergeant shouting orders. That’s still open for debate. Otherwise, I think it’s going to be fairly standard otherwise.

But we’ll see, sometimes these projects take on a life of their own and transform quite a bit before they’re done.

Nothing magical to it (My skills aren’t up to anything too fancy).

White undercoat, Tamiya white spray

2-3 coats thinned down Blood Red

Offset the shadows with the Baalite Red Ink Wash (still needs a lot of clean up)

Dry brush 1:1 Blood Red & Blazing Orange

Dry brush Blazing Orange

Normally I cover up all the “mistakes” with battle damage which I’ll most likely work on this evening.

I’ve suffered some computer problems so I haven’t kept up with the updates as I hoped. But, that has not stopped modeling progress. In fact, the pics below are now old and a great deal more progress has been made since then.

Here are the interior parts nigh complete:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v699/OwlandMoonGuy/Angels%20Sanguine/01-RearInterior.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v699/OwlandMoonGuy/Angels%20Sanguine/02-RightInterior.jpg

Also finished at this point:

The chassis is assembled.

The sponsons & side doors have been magnetized.

Custom decals have been made & applied

-Chapter logo, devotional script, kill counts among others

I’m hoping to have some more pics posted yet this week.

The various parts are starting to come together. Here are some shots showing the magnetized side doors & sponsons.

The red is almost where I like it as far as crisp vs. weathered is concerned. Next steps will be battle damage & accessories (purity seals & whatnot).

I’m hoping to get a majority of the remaining work done over the weekend so expect more to come shortly.

That is a really nice landraider OMG. Love the killmarkings(?) on the side door and is that a lot of text on the top panel? All looks very good. The red on the exterior though looks to be slightly more orangey than that on the interior, is that an effect of the flash? Can't wait to see it finished!

The strips of text on the roof are custom decals. I based the text of my Index Astartes article on the AS. I don’t remember it off the top of my head. I’ll post a pic of it after I get the black side done.

At this stage, the red might appear more orange. After I add the battle damage the overall look will darken a bit. Still, I tend to take these pics at odd times. I think these were taken around 2:00 AM last night and never pay too much attention to the picture quality. Not until the model is complete that is.

So I’ll blame the camera.

Thanks for the comments, -OMG

OMG it is always a treat to see what you do. I am always impressed with how fast you paint and the quality of your models. The Landraider is looking really good, I can't wait to see the finished model. Is that skull and wings freehand or some sort of decal? Looks good regardless. Good to see the Angels Sanguine once more.

nice progress so far omg :) are the kill markings taken from actuall games or just to make it look impressive?

alos, the white part will be painted black right?

Countless are the victories recorded in the annals of the Space Marines. But I’ll venture that it will serve as a future prediction as well…

And yes, the white areas will be painted black. You might find it strange that I build to black from a white undercoat but, as with other colors, I find it quicker & easier to build highlights & lowlights. As in, it’s easier to make something darker than lighter, just IMHO.

Is that skull and wings freehand or some sort of decal?

That is a custom decal, as are the kill markings and the devotional script on the roof. My freehand skills is an area I’ve been improving lately but nothing to the level of consistency I like in Chapter badges & other such insignia.

Thanks for the comments gents. -OMG

Made some more progress over the weekend. Looking at the pics, the black looks very washed out in the second picture. It's actually more like the small section you can see in the top pic.

Everything is pretty well taking shape. Just need to spend time on the details and bring this project to a close.

This is really awesome!

I especially like the text on the top. If you ever had the time you could do a tutorial on it? I had the idea to do the same/similar on two WB land raiders but I am a bit scared of decals. The decal you have on the black side of the tank, is it transparent text with black background? If so, how do you make such a thing?

Really nice. Always envy the people who do a dual color scheme. The black doesn't look that bad imho, fits the vehicle! The only thing that is kinda weird are the decals on the side doors (the skulls), especially the black one, you clearly see those are stuck on, and not painted. Perhaps go over it with some paint.

Sorry for the late replies all – my online time has been limited. Here are the answers which are hope are better late than never:

I especially like the text on the top. If you ever had the time you could do a tutorial on it?

Not too much magic there really other than creating custom decals. It then just becomes a matter of picking up some basic digital graphic skills and working with the medium accordingly. If it would help, I can post the source of the images I used on the tank. Just let me know.

the blak does look a little washed out, it might be nothing but i would give it an extra layer of black just to be on the safe side.

I went ahead and took your advice Twist – let me know what you think given the pics below.

The only thing that is kinda weird are the decals on the side doors (the skulls), especially the black one, you clearly see those are stuck on, and not painted.

I took a stab at re-blending the color around the decals. I actually don’t mind that the decal look like decals as I’m not trying to fool anyone into thinking that I did them freehand. I prefer using them because of the added fidelity & uniform look they provide. Let me know if it’s any better.

And with that, here’s the update. Just a few more things to do – treads, anti-personnel launchers, battle damage and that’s about it.

it definitely looks alot better mate!

especially as a comparison picture(the top is the current one, the bottom is what it used to look like):

as you can probably see the block of colour looks alot better with a 2nd coat than with only the 1st coat(which looks more grey and like a wash(notice the tide marks and pooling)).

on a different note, i really like what you've done with the hatch behind the multi-melta and with the multi-melta itself.

Can we see a close-up of the writing on the top?

Certainly; check back tomorrow and I’ll get the source images posted. I can’t recall what it says at the moment; some quasi-religious devotional statement that rambles a bit. I pride myself in the ability to string together a whole lot of words while not communicating anything in particular.

Thanks & agreed. You can see that the red patches on the black side need similar work. Expect there to be a marked improvement in those areas at the next update as well.
