Vamp's Call of the Imperium thread...

Recommended Posts

Very mild progress report, no pictures yet, though that will change.

The Terminators are so very close to being painted, the bases are almost finished and there are a couple of tiny touch ups to do on the termies themselves before I get the old chaos black around them.

The Dreadnought - Panoptes - is coming along nicely, though isn't as far along as the other squads.

More photos tomorrow before the spray goes on them.

I love how this is coming along, can you tell us how you made the Vanguard Sergeant?

I already said earlier in the thread. :)

Here you go: LINK

Whoops I skipped right over that earlier! I do have a suggestion though, one of your terminators (the one with the spines); its a good conversion concept butI think the spines are too long and droopy they kind of look like random tentacles, maybe you could shorten them a little?

Latest update:

The Terminators are based and base coated - though the black spray was applied in the evening and the photo's show area's that looked black in the twilight as actually not having spray on them. I'll remedy this before my next update.

Still, here they are, (almost) ready for painting:

Brother Hecaton

I realise from the photos that I have forgotten to blend his thumb claws into his fists, I'll fix that before the next update as well.

Update time!

Update on the Vanguard - my progress has slowed considerably as I am currently working on a similar style challenge as here but on a Warhammer Fantasy Beastmen army, so I have to split my time between the two.

Still, Vanguard, hooooooooooooooooooooo! ;)

Well... the Ironclad Dreadnought I was working on is not progressing to my liking. I have a love/hate relationship with it - sometimes I like it, other times I just wonder why I bothered with the pose. As such I am getting frustrated with the model, so checked with the Admin staff here and I have been allowed to substitute another WIP Ironclad Dreadnought for it - some of you will remember this guy from when I first converted him. Well, he was basecoated black for a game way back when and then forgotten about. Well today that changed. I have done most of the green, washed him and highlighted the edges, and now have started on the hazard stripes and the sarcophagus front. See what you think so far:

Firstly; my favorite Terminator is Brother Cottus. He's the least extravagant, but I feel he's got a simple hardcore feel about him.

Secondly; whenever I look at your Vangaurd I hear action movie music and picture them moving in slow motion while stuff explodes behind them. This is awesome.

Thirdly; while I understand why you've abandoned, (temporarily?), your original Ironclad, I'm still somewhat disappointed. I felt he was coming along rather well, and was looking forward to seeing the finished product. Issues were addressed, and I believe you dealt with them well. However, I understand the lack of motivation that comes from working on a peice that you've come to dislike, and I accept that you had a deadline you wanted to adhere to.

All that said, I like your new, (old), Ironclad as well. Excellent pose and supercool siesmic hammer. Looks good so far.

It's good you abandoned the first iron clad, this one is much more readable. I can clearly see what's going on, he's got a drill and a hammer, and is not a midget.

As far as the vanguard go, some of them are pretty...good. I'm not seeing a space marine no matter how furious floating through the air in a 4 ft vertical leap. I especially don't like the one's who've apparently been tripped up by errant terrain which has been thrown at their feet. LESS is MORE, when it comes to bases and dramatic poses. Some of them are looking good, some of them look like you need to bring it back in a lot. For help, take a look at the GW assault marines, though they aren't falling over pesky crates, they are sprinting or leaping, and with proper bending are repositioning of their toes (that are touching the ground) and the right arms they could look like they are in an all out charge.

UPDATE!

It's been a while since I updated this thread, however I want to prove to you all that I have not been idle. As it was my camera batteries died and I couldn't find the charger for them. Well, now I have, the batteries are fully charged and pictures have been taken.

Firstly though...

@ Icarus - I fully intend to finish the dreadnought however not in the near future. I like Brother Cottus as well, he was the first member of the unit I put together and I am so very pleased with his pose.

@ Kid Famous - Thanks for the constructive feedback, it is greatly appreciated. I know not every likes over-the-top poses on models, but I really do. I am firmly in the MORE is MORE camp, and don't see me changing anytime soon. :D

But like I said, thank you. I am glad that you took the time to offer advice on models you dislike - not many people would, and that is why I love the B&C, as it has members like you in abundance.

@ musliisafish - of course you can, it's not like I can copyright it! :)

Now, onto the photos!

Here's a little teaser on the progress of the Vanguard - the rest will come in time, though I am working mainly on the Terminators atm.

UPDATE time! :(

Progress is steady on the Terminators and the Dreadnought - the Vanguard are coming along albeit much more slowly.

On a positive note, I used all three units in a game of Apocalypse last week and they all did well, the Terminators even managed to destroy an Ork Stompa in combat! They will be getting a suitable kill marker on their armour just as soon as I figure out what to use to represent it.

Updated pictures below:

UPDATE TIME!

After a couple of days of hard work, Brother Cottus and Brother Gyges are complete - except for painting the edges of their bases black, adding the Titan kill marker and sealing them.

See what you think:

I hope you don't totally abandon the crouching Dread holding the staff weapon, I thought it was an amazingly dramatic pose and looked forward to seeing it finished. What is the Grey stuff you are using over the green stuff? It appears to have a much crisper edged finish than GS

It gives much smoother edges, but tends to start to 'flake' apart if you get too much water on it, and is VERY sticky. I would suggest green stuff for details, but grey stuff for smooth, flowing sections or hard edges.

I'm told mixing the two together makes for a very good all round putty, though have never tried it myself.
