Do you think it can be used on individual troops, or only for larger scale models like vehicles? My only thoughts for a point of change are the black areas on the baal that you most recently posted. It looks like there is a subtle check in the black, but at least from the pictures I think it might be too subtle. Again this could just be the photos. Along the same line though, the black areas could also use some different weathering techniques I think. I think can see where you have underlined to mark the bottom of the chip, but perhaps because of the lack of contrast between that and your rust underlayer I can't actually see the damaged parts. I've spent the past few weeks just cleaning and converting my marines, my Contempter Dreads, my Dreadnought Drop Pod, and gotten some more progress on my vehicles. Alas, my vehicles (including the Dreads and Drop Pod) are in the car, so I'll have to show them another time. Yes, it is the same pose as Justicar Weiss, because it's just too badass not to use on a gaming model to show off! I have made adjustments in the sculpt, including a more "natural" positioning of the legs and anatomically correct wrists! For whatever reason this conversion was far easier to build, and I'll be making more robust purity seals, tabards, and maybe even a cloak? Who knows. While my 1850 army only has 4 squads, I'm building and painting the entire collection at once, which means 6 squads in 5 Razorbacks/Rhinos. Notice that they're all wielding the beefy two-handed swords from the Grey Knights kit. Pretty annoying to convert; there is a pin running thru at least one leg to keep them on the bases, and there is a pin in each arm running from the shoulder straight through to the hand (and in some cases down the guard and haft of the swords!) http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/wips/lamenters/oct17_6_specialweapons.JPG These are the most "stock" infantry in my army. 3 Flamers, 3 Meltaguns. One each will go in a paired razorback (so 1 Flamer and 1 Meltagun in the Heavy Bolter Razorbacks, 1 Flamer and 1 Meltagun in the Las-Plas Razorbacks, 1 Flamer and 1 Meltagun in the Twin-Las Razorbacks.) While I love the way the Flamer is held, for whatever reason it doesn't fit properly with the left hand, and you actually have to carve away a bit of the handle to get the weapon to sit properly. Oh, and guns don't sit properly on the right hand because of the Iron Armor gauntlets. It's mainly just poor photos. All the photos of my Lamenters so far have been with my iPhone camera with awful lighting. I'll try and get some better shots once models start getting completed. The right arm is especially good looking with that armor plate on it. Would you be willing to post a tutorial on getting the arms in that most epic pose if you do another marine like it. I'd love to have a guy like that in my army. If you aren't planning on doing another for yourself I'd be interested in commissioning one from you if you are willing. DV8 Posted October 18, 2011 Author Share Posted October 18, 2011 The basic principle of hairspray is that it dissolves and can be scrubbed/washed away with water. Which works great because as the hairspray dissolves, it pulls flakes of paint with it, allowing for amazingly realistic battle damage/weathering/chipping effects for very little in effort. Exhibit A, I battle damaged all 12 of my tanks in 2 days. In this case, I wanted a brownish-red, so I primed Krylon Camo Brown, and a zenithal highlight with Krylon Rust Red Primer. You can replace these colors with whatever you want showing through (greys, blacks, oranges, browns, silvers, the sky is the limit), and it doesn't have to be applied by primer. You can hand-paint or airbrush these layers on. It's really just applying whatever color you want underneath. This you then seal in with GW Purity Seal, to prevent any damage from occurring to the layers underneath when chipping away, and to give the hairspray a little bit of tooth to adhere to. Once the varnish dries, coat the models liberally (they will look wet, dry glossy) with 2-3 coats of hairspray, allowing for 10-15 minutes dry time between each layer. With the hairspray coats applied, you can then go back in and work on top to add your main colors (in this case, yellow). I used an airbrush because it's faster and I can get my initial zenithal highlights without putting too much paint on the model. It is recommended you use an airbrush for this stage because hand paint creates thicker layers of paint, and uses more water (which may react with the hairspray and dissolve it before you can achieve the chipping effect.) More or less paint at this stage will affect the actual chipping technique, more on that next. Once your colors have been applied, you then go back with clean water and start working away at your model. Find a place you want to chip, and coat it with water, allowing 20-30 seconds for it to seep down to the hairspray layer. You can then add more water and work away with a stiff brush, a toothpick, sculpting tool, even a blade, to chip and flake away the paint. The more paint you have, the longer it will take for the water to dissolve the hairspray and the harder it will be to get the chipping effect to start showing through. Additionally, the more hairspray you use, the bigger and more "defined" your chunks will be. Less hairspray gives you a scratchier effect. Once you're happy with how the chips look, varnish the model once again (so that when you paint over, you won't accidentally reactivate the hairspray) and you can go back and paint on top (in this case, I add washes of Baal Red and Gryphonne Sepia to the yellow, and I paint all the details/freehand. If you aren't planning on doing another for yourself I'd be interested in commissioning one from you if you are willing. PM me if you would be interested in that. I don't think I'll be re-doing that conversion any time soon. Insofar as character conversions are concerned, I'd like to maintain a uniqueness in the models I make, and with this one exception (where I repeated it twice, where Weiss ended up being too fragile for game play and anatomically incorrect, this new Librarian is fixing all prior errors) I don't make a habit of redoing the same model over and over again. That and I'd like to know that there's no other model to match my Librarian (that is, he is unique) I'm sure you'll understand. Meh. Yea I love the knightly look of the Grey Knights, I figure I'm never going to play that particular codex, that I might as well get some of that imagery into my Lamenters. Just wait till I cover these guys in checks and hearts; there won't be any doubt in your mind these are the progeny of Sanguinius. I understand not wanting anyone else to have an exact copy of something I modeled, I kind of feel the same way. Perhaps I could commission you to make me a character for my army sometime. Thank you for the tips on using hairspray for weathering your troops. It sounds much easier than using masking fluid. I'll have to give it a try on my next squad. If I had an airbrush to play around with, that's the way I'd weather all my marines. And probably every army. I'm sure I'd take it overboard and weather something stupid, like Empire greatswords. Heh. I'd also like to second a tutorial on the freehand. Also, nice use of the transfer on your Contemptor's chassis, the weathering and chipping makes it pop nicely. Thanks for the tips about the hairspray technique, I was thinking you were using the salt chipping method which is why I wasn't convinced it would work on troops but this method makes a lot more sense for achieving the fine chips needed for an individual marine. I think I am going to have to give it a go, are there any kinds of hairspray that won't work with this ?(I know nothing about hairspray).
