DV8's Project Log

Minor update. I managed to squeeze in a few hours of priming before the snow and got all my terrain primed. Also painted the surface of my table. Letting it all dry overnight before I (hopefully) begin airbrushing tonight.

I'm really looking forward to seeing that complete board now. And greatcrusade08, in America and a lot of countries that aren't Britain, the drive on the opposite sides of the road from us.

Fair enough then, it's hard to tell over the inernet when you can't hear people's tone of voice or see their body language etc. Either way, this is an awesome topic and I absolutely love your Sanguinary Guard, and that gaming table is essentially the play area of my dreams...

Quick update. Mephiston is as good as he's gonna get for the time frame/deadline I'm imposing on myself, so it's time to slap some paint on him.

WIP shots taken from work. I'm gonna work on him during my lunch break and post more shots later.

As a pseudo-related tangential thought, the iPhone 4 takes some pretty amazing quality photos... :to: (I say this, of course, not because it's a phone, but because it's an iPhone...the older versions had terrible cameras)

PS GC08, it may be the wrong side of the road, but at that hour, it'll sure wake everybody the hell up ;)

EDIT:

Just figured I'd do a recap in this post. I started this log way back when with a whole list of projects. Some have been scrapped (biker army, Warriors of Chaos Trolls army (the parts of which were swapped for new Dark Eldar models) and many others completed. As it stands, all that I have left is:

Wolfwing

Through lack of motivation and just pure laziness on my part, I haven't done as much as I'd like on these guys. I get the 27th and 28th off though so I'm going to see about powering through as much as I can those two days.

Nipple Wing

My Sanguinary Guard army is taking FAR longer than anticipated, but that's mainly because I'm shooting for a quality far higher than I had originally intended to put in. As it is, I'm in the process of touching up and in some cases repainting the wings that attach to their jump packs. Damn you white wings!

Gaming Table

I airbrushed the basecoats onto all my buildings last night (so now I have a pile of Trollblood Blue buildings), and will continue to airbrush most evenings of the following few weeks, so expect many updates on them soon once I have some pretty stuff to show. The table will be painted in an identical pattern to my Space Wolves display board that is featured a few pages back.

Just another update. Some more work done on Mephiston during my lunch:

PS I dislike the sculpt of the scrolls. It's rough and grainy and not at all smooth. It's an annoying texture to blend on.

@Pulse - What else am I supposed to do during my lunch break? I'm not exactly the social type so all I do is sit at my desk anyways. Might as well be productive. ^_^

Just taking a break from airbrushing to post up some shots of what I'm working on at this exact moment.

Here I am! :D

How do you find that compressor? Is it loud? It doesn't have an actual tank right? Do you notice any pulsations with the air pressure when using it? Reason why I asked is I was thinking about buying the exact one off ebay awhile ago, from a seller in Ontario so probably in your neck of the woods. Ended up getting another one from Canadian Tire which is more of a hardware compressor.

D as always I love your stuff even if it is loyalist. You continue to be an inspiration.

What is the bottle of Future Floor finish for?

Had question about air brushing also, but moved them to general PCA questions forum.

Now, back to your regualrly schedule masterpieces..

Reason why I asked is I was thinking about buying the exact one off ebay awhile ago, from a seller in Ontario so probably in your neck of the woods. The compressor is very quiet. In fact, my airbrush spraying even just air is louder than the compressor itself, and when I'm actually at work, with the music and the airbrush going I don't even hear the compressor.

There are no real pulsations due to air pressure because the filter and pressure regulator keeps the air flow relatively steady. If I do a long, extended burst (say when basecoating large surfaces), I'll notice a SLIGHT drop in air flow, but not majorly noticeable to cause any alarm.

The one I was using before this was identical, save for a big black air tank affixed to the bottom of the compressor. Both compressors are designed to compress air up until it hits an optimal PSI, and then the compressor auto shuts off. When the PSI drops below a certain level, the compressor turns on and ramps up the PSI back to optimum levels, and then shuts off again. The problem with having a big black air tank is that when I started airbrushing, it would never quite hit that optimal PSI level. Thus I found with the air tank that the compressor would run for 15, 20 minutes on end before each auto-shut off, and it would kick in again the moment the tank PSI dropped even minor levels. What ended up happening was that I would go for an hour or two and the compressor would simply over-heat and burn out. I'd then have to wait for a day or so to let the compressor cool off before I could go back to work. It was a major nuisance.

The new compressor's auto on-off feature kicks in quite often, turning on for short bursts of 5 seconds to bring the PSI back up and turn turning off again for another 5 or so seconds. I've done a few sessions of 4-5 hours of airbrushing now without any major issues, and not even coming close to the heat levels my old compressor would reach.

I'm very happy with the compressor, but I'm still learning all the fiddly details of my airbrush (which, sad to say, is good for basecoats and maybe some broad highlights/shadows at best). At some point I need to invest in a better airbrush with finer tips for better detail work.

What is the bottle of Future Floor finish for?

Had question about air brushing also, but moved them to general PCA questions forum.

Way back when (I'm talking 5 or 6 years ago) I used to be a dirty cheater when it came to painting armies, and I'd cut corners in an attempt to get decent results at a very fast speed. So what I would do is make my own "washes" by mixing diluted paint with Future Floor Wax. Future breaks the surface tension so that when I apply my home-made wash, it would run into the crevices and stay there with no pooling issues. It allowed me to wash entire models in seconds without really caring about neatness and was a quick way to allow me to finish easy armies.

Was the result good? Not particularily, but what did I know back then? I've come a long way since, and I haven't touched the bottle since. God that makes me sound like an alcoholic....

I hate Astorath's face. No pupils to speak of, and don't even get me started on the hair. Aish. Probably reworked both for the better part of half an hour before I just said "fug it...no more!"

2 questions. The feet. Should the "bones" be left red or painted bone? I'm leaning more towards red, but I dunno. Also, back of the cape. Suggestions for freehand?

Actually, I think it was intended to be a Chaplain's Death mask, that would also explain the cables on the side of the jaw.

Even though, nice work DV8, the cloak might be a bit rough and a tad damaged on the edges. Still, nice work. ;)

That actually explains a lot...I'd thought about painting his face as a Death Mask, to fit in with the rest of my army (Dante + Sanguinary Guard, all with Death Masks).

Yea I'm not particularly pleased with the cowl and cape. The damage is intentional, but the roughness is just my poor sculpting skills and an apparent inability to sand to save my life.

Just wanted to add a generic comment DV8....... Stunning! Been perusing all your work, of particular interest to me as a Space Wolf player since Rogue Trader. However all your work is a joy to behold, not wishing to just blow smoke up your orafice, but your work is truly amazing, so much detail. Keep up the good work.

Apologies but alas no updates worthy of show. I've been working some crazy hours at work recently (9 to 8 Monday through Friday) because our project is being pushed through the pipeline for release, so I have no energy or motivation to paint after I come home. At best I'll squeeze in an hour or two of Fallout 3 or Left 4 Dead 2 (I just HAVE to shoot something after an 11 hour work day) before I pass out.

I'm slowly adding some Vanguard Veterans to my Blood Angels, and I'm painting up some tutorial figures for Octavulg, so I'll see about posting those up when I have something to show. That reminds me, I also need to photograph my Blood Angels...

Took pictures of my Sanguinary Guard army. As a side note, metallics are damn near impossible to photograph properly. And if I never paint white wings again, it'll be too soon.

And my WIP Vanguard Veteran squad. The armor color will end up being the same as the Sanguinary Priest. It's not pink! Shush...

Its awesome to see this army nearly complete as it inspired me to paint up a Sanguinary guard army for myself (after stealing some ideas for the priests ect.. :ermm:), I like the little details like the individual names on scroll work which are very impressive. but I did notice from the pic's that some of the blood drops and vials on the armour have been left golden, don't know if that's intentional or not, just seems slightly unfinished after obviously putting in alot of effort in to them.

also feeling your pain on photographing metallics :D , the shine seems to wash out the contrast completely on my pic's.

Keep up the inspiring work! ( cant wait to see the warhound )
