So I am in...well let's call it a pickle...

There is a doubles tournament that my friend (manager of GW STC) and I are playing in as a team, and the original date was sometime early March. Realizing that I didn't have time to finish my Dark Eldar, two months ago I signed up for the Librarium Painting Challenge and commited myself to finish my 1750 Loganwing army. I figured what the hey, it'd be great motivation and impetus to finish this army double-quick.

Well barely a day or two afterwards I found out that the tournament date had been pushed back till April 9th, due to a booking issue with the venue! I was ecstatic, and I went to work on my Dark Eldar. After painting furiously away for the past month, they're finally finished! But that also only left me with barely 3 weeks to go on my Space Wolves.

The blades of the guillotine loom ever closer and closer...

So I am now in crunch mode. I have been without internet the past week at home so I've been unable to upload my WIP pictures, so these first three are a little out of date (by a week).

March 4. The army after airbrushing the highlights and shadows. I experimented with running my washes through the airbrush as well instead of doing them by hand, to see if it would save me some time*.

Translation: This was the make or break stage. If the washes didn't work I wouldn't have a bat's chance in hell of finishing the army in time. But...

March 6. The armor on the army is completely finished, this shot showing the touch-up highlights and a final wash. I did in 3 days what would normally have taken me about 2 or 3 weeks. Kudos to Eggroll for the inspiration in technique.

The past week has just been me basecoating metallics and fur (haven't had a lot of time to paint), but with a little luck I should be able to have (more or less) everything done on the infantry except heads and bases by Friday. Wish me luck!

Lovely subtle blending on Grimaldus :tu:

When you based your Sang Guard what did you use for the rock slabs?

Just bits of cork board.

How did you do the wings on the SG mate?

Due in part to the speed with which I draw/illustrate, along with a slow-down in the pipeline for tasks for the Concept Team, I've found myself with a surplus of free time at work (re: days of boredom). So I've taken the time to keep truckin' away on my Wolfwing army, and I'm making some pretty good progress! I've just finished painting and washing all of the metallics, and from here it's just highlights (on said metallics), bone, shoulderpads, heads, and faces.

To start us off, here's a picture of my work workstation/cubicle. I wish my desk at home was this clean/uncluttered.

A top down shot of all the infantry for the army, minus Logan Grimnar (who will be painted at the very end as a "reward")

Some closeups of a few random models to show where I'm at with the models, as well as the quality of the paint job (I'm not copping out just because I have to paint fast, I swears!) Apologies for the slight fuzziness, as these were taken with my iPhone.

While there is a slight change in the colors of the shadows/tints when you compare them to my "other" Space Wolf army, the colors are quite close enough that from a distance, the difference is quite negligible! The only difference is the technique of paint application (I used predominantly an airbrush for the armor instead of a brush).

Your painting is awesome as ever, but isn't Grimaldus's armor a bit light or is it just the photo?

I really love the subtle glow of the lenses and the plasma coil.

BTW what's with the symbols in some of the photos? Is it some kind of signature?

It's supposed to be strong zenithal lighting.

Yes, it's my chinese name in the style of the more traditional Chinese Seals used back in the day. I had the opportunity to travel to China a few years back and had one made up:

Progress on my Wolfwing infantry:

I'm going to be painting for the rest of the day, so hopefully I'll be able to get lots more done on these guys. All in all I'm loving how they're shaping out, compared to how little time I've had to invest in them.

Expect another update tonight.

Phew I got a lot done today. I've finished all the purity seals, bones, teeth, etc. Basically anything bone is finished, barring scriptwork. I've also highlighted all the yellow shoulder pads, as well as finished the faces on half my infantry. If I can keep up this level of productivity, I should be able to finish these infantry by Wednesday or Thursday.

I had originally intended to experiment more with flesh tones for this army, but with the March 31st deadline looming just around the corner, I decided to stick with what I knew and kept the skin tones simple. I'll leave the experimenting for my next project (which I am very excited about...more on that later).

Hi DV8, I'm not sure that I've commented on your stuff before, having been content for the most part to sit in stunned silence.

If you wouldn't mind, could you deliver a quick summation of your choice of airbrush/compressor, perhaps a tip or two and a hearty exhortation that we should all trot down to our local DIY store and acquire said equipment?

Good to see RED in your playlist.

I finished applying the transfers to my infantry last night, although I didn't get a chance to snap any shots of them. I've pretty much finished Logan Grimnar as well save snow flock, transfers, and battle damage (which also has to be applied to the rest of the infantry).

All that's left is 2 Vindicators, 2 Drop Pods (grey armor on all four are completed via airbrush already) and 10 objective markers.

I haven't had the opportunity to invest in and/or try a higher end name-brand airbrush, so really I just picked a decent (and cheap) one off eBay. It's a Master brand airbrush I picked up for $120 along with a compressor; dual action, internal mix, gravity feed. The original compressor died on me (long story, the tank ended up being no good in combination with that specific brand of compressor) so I picked up another one from eBay for about $80. Tankless, but essentially the same. Auto-shut off, water trap, and air pressure regulator (I think there's a post and pic of it somewhere in the thread).

DIY stores will probably carry more industrial equipment; art stores are probably a safer bet for stuff more art related (that said, I'm not exactly the most hard-ware savvy so don't hold me to my word). Most of the stuff in art stores are name brand though, so expect to pay a premium. If cost is an issue and name brand is not, by all means try eBay; there are some great deals to be had if you know where to look.

Army is looking great. Keep up the momentum!

I'm actually really excited! Once finished, I will actually no longer have any armies that I currently own that require painting (there are a few units scattered here and there for my Vampires, Blood Angels, and Guard), but nothing major! So that's definitely what's keeping me motivated. It does help that finishing my Loganwing gives me an approximately 100+ strong Great Company of Space Wolves, and I get to start work on my Warhound Titan.

There's a saying amongst mini painters that once you paint your last mini you die. Better stock up on more minis! I'm looking forward to seeing that Warhound painted up. I'm curious, how much did canada customs ding you for the package?

Yea I'm really digging the skin recipe (again, kudos Eggroll) along with the orange hair (I think I just found the color recipe for the armor for my next army), although he does remind me a little of Pippy Longstocking... :S I just remembered when I painted Logan Grimnar the first time around that a few people had commented that his face, hair, and wolf pelt all blended together. So I figured I'd experiment with something new to separate his face from his pelt.

I wouldn't know, actually. The Warhound was a birthday gift from my brother, his girlfriend, and another friend (I know, I'm really lucky ;) )

Believe me though, I am far from being done with this hobby. I just don't like having a backlog of models I have to paint, particularly if it's armies. At least this way any army I start will be the only army I'll be working on.

Skull tokens are done:

Just a minor update. Hurrah assembly-lining Drop Pod doors and Vindicator Siege shields:

http://spacewithinspace.net/images/wips/lpc/assembly-line.JPG

Home stretch. All that's left is minor detailing on the 4 vehicles, weathering, and then battle damage across the army.

Mr. DV8,

What do you use to base your models? I think it is a detail overlooked by so many people, but makes your models look even more amazing.

Thanks.

V

It'll really depend on the theme/appearance I'm going for, as well as how lazy I feel or how elaborate I want to go. My Wolfwing army was built primarily with my prize(s) for winning the Golden Bolter Painting Contest last year, so they're all based using the resin "Ruins" bases from Dragonforge.

Drop Pods and Vindicators almost complete. Just minor details like lenses, headlights, scrolls/skulls, etc.
