DV8's Project Log

This will be an image intensive post so bear with me.

Summation: on March 4, 2011, with much panic and apprehension did I begin to undertake my vow for the Librarium Painting Challenge. Gripped by zealous fervor and the desire to uphold the reputation and honor of myself and the Vlka Fenryka did I surge forth, brushes and paint flying to and fro as I attacked my models with gusto, a curse and an oath on my lips.

On March 30, 2011 did I complete my vows. May Russ and the AllFather be pleased!

And FINALLY, I pulled out every painted Space Wolf I have completed to date, totalling (if my math is correct) 119 infantry and 13 vehicles:

Really impressed with the speed + quality of this work DV8. Excellent work thus far.

Thanks. I am noticing that is typically my modus operandi: brief periods of intense painting and productivity separated by long periods of rest and relaxation (re: I'm lazy and in need of much motivation).

I mean good lord man. You make me want to grab paint and brush and run to the painting table and kick over the table, paints and minis at the same time!

Great looking army.

And wait a minute don't you also have a blue/grey SW army???

Russ would be proud. Good job.

I've only ever owned 2 Space Wolves armies to date.

My original Space Wolf army (from almost 10 years ago):

And the one pictured above. I'd painted a blue-grey Logan Grimnar as a commission, but that was a one-off model.

EDIT: my mistake. Looking carefully the mural on the Rhino is signed 2k1! I can't believe I've improved that much since then! And it's only been 10 years...

I... I just... wow... That is whit I call pure dedication to the hobby. To have done so much (and such high quality) in so little time is... awesome (in the British English sense of the word). Congratulations on completing your vow anyhow :tu:

Just a quick question though, the Wolf Scout with meltagun, how did you convert him (I'm assuming it's a conversion)?

Thanks! I was surprised I was able to complete it on time, much less a day early! I was freakin' out at the start of March. :)

I don't remember much about how I converted the Meltagun scout. IIRC I probably used a pair of scout arms that were supposed to hold a Bolter, and just replaced it with a Meltagun. There may have been green stuff and sculpting involved...

Ok, it's just that I've seen it quite a few times and I know you can't get the arms with the meltagun attached in the box... anyway, I'll find a way to do it :tu:

And I think we're all surprised with how quickly you painted that bucket-load of models ;)

When did you decide to stop building the army? what point did you reach that is, or have you decided?

I haven't stopped building the army. At present I can put together 2 separate 1750 pt armies, plus a little extra, and I fully intend to expand as I see fit (either I need models to field, or I see something cool that I want to paint). Benefit to having a large collection to draw from is that I can repurpose units to build totally different lists.

Speed is never an issue. It's getting the right quality that's the tricky part. :D

I must say that is an excellent army that you have there, maybe someday mine will be half as nice.

Just practice man. I've been at this for almost 15 years now, so I've got a lot of experience under my belt. Besides, you should have seen my first dozen or so armies. Absolutely terrible :S

Yet you pulled it off amazingly well and with a very high standard. I'm still amazed.

Your models look amazing. I have just began doing some of my first painting, and I cannot see how you use a airbrush for such detail oriented painting. I am ready to get airbrushing TODAY after seeing your work.

It'll really depend on the theme/appearance I'm going for, as well as how lazy I feel or how elaborate I want to go. My Wolfwing army was built primarily with my prize(s) for winning the Golden Bolter Painting Contest last year, so they're all based using the resin "Ruins" bases from Dragonforge.

DV8

That's cool. I also found some cool bases from Micro Art Studio. I guess I will just have to get creative. Or start playing in tournaments to get so cool prizes.

Wow, more than a dozen armies; that's almost an army a year. Where do you put all the models, or did you sell most of them?

Curious, what made you decide to give all your dudes yellow and black pack pads instead of the classic pack markings, ie: red/ black for hunters, black/ white for long fangs, etc?

I would think it's for coherency as it gives a single colour carried across all the figures in the army. Wolves can look a little like a gaudy travelling circus with all the colour variations in pack markings.

Congrats on finishing them early and once again to a very high standard. Looking good :)

My original Space Wolf army had the classic geometric shapes for colors. Looking back I think it looks atrocious, and the uniformity of the yellow across the field is much more aesthetically balanced and pleasing to me.

Congrats on the early finish, the whole hoard of them look awesome. Got any plans for a new project yet?

I need to finish up a display board for my Dark Eldar (doubles tournament next weekend), and then it's my Warhound Titan. I'm also building and painting a one-off Grey Knight for fun. Some of you may recognize the pose.

In so far as armies are concerned, the new Tomb Kings are being released in a few months time, so I'll hopefully be adding some undead cavalry to my Vampire Counts. I'm also planning to build a pre-heresy Thousand Sons army based around the Grey Knight codex (makes it unique/different around here, and it fits perfectly as a nemesis army to my Space Wolves). But that's also a few months down the road, as I have to save up funds (and I'm hoping to make some headway on my gaming table now that I have the time).
