Introduction: Dark Millennium

In the 41st millennium, the human race is in decline. Once a conqueror and lord of the galaxy, man now struggles to ensure his own survival. The vast territories of the Imperium expand no more. They shrink, as every day hundreds of planets fall to heretics, aliens, and traitors. The High Lords of Terra proclaim crusade after crusade in the God-Emperor’s name, stretching Imperial forces to their very limit. Rebellion and desertion threaten everywhere mankind turns.

Every day, more planets are lost in the folds of the Imperium’s unimaginably vast bureaucracy, the Administratum.

Every day, millions if not billions of humans die, butchered by violent aliens, killed by sinister scions of the Dark Gods, even executed by their own leaders and soldiers.

Every day, hundreds of thousands of ships are lost in the Chaos-filled Warp as the Astronomicon, the great beacon which holds the Imperium together, falters.

Every day, the Golden Throne upon which the rotted corpse of the Immortal God-Emperor sits encounters technical difficulties, which the Mechanicum’s techpriests are unable to repair, bringing the Emperor’s twisted shell closer and closer to true death.

If the Emperor dies, his legendarily powerful mind ceases to function, and the horrible daemonic entities residing in the Warp will no longer be held back. They will pour into the galaxy, and they will burn cities and destroy planets, not stopping until all semblance of order is dissipated…

And all will come to an end.

This is the tragic, grim, and despairingly dark world of the 41st millennium, which now draws to a close. Mankind has been the owner of the stars for nearly 400 long centuries, and now, as its realms fold up around it, the Imperium enters its most brutal, violent, and cruel chapter.

These are the End Times…
