HEART OF IRON PT 2

THE BATTLE OF GEBOLRAH.

BY "COMMANDER SKAAV"

The Imperiums defeat at the hands of the Iron Warriors had been bitter to say the least; they had the Heart of Iron, and now had begun to forge their plans. Tolkar paced the floor of the vast conference chamber impatiently, waiting for the reports to come through from the distant world of Gebolrah.

Commander Skaav sat at the conference table quaffing a strange and impure liquid, he turned towards his lord and master, and addressed him "Ignatius, do you have to pace the floor like a Ceresian Death Tygron? " The Iron Warrior lord turned and gave the Commander an evil glare, Skaav should remember not address him in that matter when in the company of lesser officers, indeed they were close comrades, and they grew up on the same world, became Scouts for the legion, and served in the same squad for countless years.

Yes, Veridius Skaav was more like a brother to him than his own had been. He barely remembered them, but on the day he turned his back on the false Emperor, he ensured they had felt his wrath. The comm link suddenly crackled into life, Tolkar deemed it a poor signal, but it would have to do for the time being.

The report came through slowly, but surely, the Imperium had hemmed in the Iron Warriors of the third Grand Company within the great citadel, the men of the fourth Grand Company had been forced to retreat behind their defences in order to carry out a bombardment on the enemy in order to scatter them. Tolkar had little interest in these matters of course, he had his own men on the surface, not participating in the fighting, and no for that was merely the diversion.

His own men had gone to that Emperor-forsaken world in order to retrieve a much more valuable prize, more valuable than that of the Heart of Iron. It would only be a matter of time before the next piece of the ever increasing puzzle would fall into place.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The battle had been long and fierce, it had now entered its fourth day, and the Guardsmen had begun to grow weary. The enemy had barricaded themselves within the walls of the citadel, they had begun bombarding the tired blood soaked Guard with every shell they could muster.

These were the men of the Death Korps of Krieg, their leader Captain Markus Andecott had been chosen specially for this mission, due to his experience against the fourth Legion. He removed the breathing mask of his helmet, an open head wound visible, and the rain diluting the fresh blood.

That last piece of shrapnel must have caused him more damage than he had first believed, but it would be his determination and belief in the God-Emperor that would keep him alive. An officer ran up to him "Captain, I've reports that the enemy is attempting to breach the walls of the citadel to the west, and the enemy artillery lines are beginning to move forwards! "

He bowed his head; this would be the defeat he had feared for so long, now there would be nothing they could do to prevent it. The Iron Warriors were too strong for them, to heavily armed, but the men of the Death Korps would never surrender, they would fight to the death.

"Inform the men... Inform the men, we fight to the bitter end, I will not see this planet fall unless the last man of Krieg falls himself! We go out fighting all the way! "

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Within the citadel, Commander Jarreck had aligned his own artillery "The enemy is on the move, in the name of Chaos be prepared to open fire! " The Iron Warriors around him roared their approval, they would take no quarter and no prisoners this would be their victory in the name of their gods, and their Primarch.

Fallen Servitors moved quickly to and from the armour transporting shell after shell, the captured basilisks and bombards firing in unison. One unfortunate creature dropped the shell it had been carrying, the response swift and bloody, as a Khorne Berserker of the legion, swung its chain weapon severing the head of the servitor from its body.

The other marines roared their approval; enough blood had been spilt this day to raise a dozen Bloodthirsters, or an entire army of Bloodletters. But no daemon would make an appearance this day, for the Chaos marines were fighting this battle on their own terms, they would have all the glory for themselves.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The field of battle had become a boggy mire of blood, stagnant water from the rain and toxic fumes, only the most fool hardy would fight in such a warzone. The Chaos marines were able to survive in this environment without helmets, but the guards were forced to replace their masks where they had removed them.

Andecott felt the edge of defeat nearing closer and closer, he fell to the ground, hitting his head, dazed he looked up, a chaos marine stood over him, power sword ready to strike, he closed his eyes ready for death, but without warning a sudden cry filled the air, a chilling terrifying cry that could turn a mans blood to ice, and a fearful mans heart stop completely.

The sound rang out across the battlefield "ULLAH! ", it repeated once more "ULLAH! " suddenly the sound of a sword thrusting through armour could be heard close to him, he opened his eyes, to see the Chaos marine slain, and there standing above him, a loyalist marine. The newcomer spoke "Captain Andecott? I'm Captain Netzka, Sons of Drachus Chapter! "

He held out his hand, the Captain grabbed it, and rose up, the marine stood at the height of about seven feet five inches tall, a standard height he assumed for most Space Marines, his armour had been painted in the most unusual colours, purple, orange and white. Obviously some form of noble house scheme.

"We picked up your distress call and came directly to your aid; my men are your men.." The Marines joined the fray with great vigour and bravery; they had been joined much to the relief of Andecott, by members of the Ordo Malleus, for he was a great supporter of their kind, and had helped many an inquisitor on their missions, with fire support or heavy weapons.

The Iron Warriors sent in their Defilers, moving in swiftly through the battle, standing firm between them and the guard, was the silent grey knight Ironclad, known to his brethren as Storm-Bringer. It let loose flurry of bolter fire, it cut down one of the walkers causing it to collapse into the mire, sinking into the mud.

The Defilers turned towards the Dreadnought, it would not have a chance of survival, yet it did bring the Marines and guard a chance to breach the walls of the citadel, their tanks bombarding the walls, from demolishers and vindicators, through to the Lascannons of the Predators and Landraiders.

After much valiant combat, the Ironclad fell to the claws of the Defilers, though they too fell to the fire power of the loyal devastator squads soon after.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chaos marines within the walls fell back, letting off a hail of bolter fire upon the Emperor's men as they moved through the wall. The enemy squad failed to notice a second breach, for though it was not large enough for a man to squeeze through, a missile could be launched. The guardsmen stationed behind it took such a course of action.

A Krak missile struck the squads champion, sending his now limp body hurtling to the floor. The Loyalist marine assault troops now flew over the wall, striking down all who attempted to escape, whilst the chapter's terminators assisted with mainstay of the battle.

Guardsmen who had now reached the inner sanctum let loos a volley of Lasgun fire, upon panicking cultists, of those who tried to escape were not as lucky as their Chaos marine brethren. They received a quick death at the hands of their loyalist marine counterparts. Any cultists captured would be handed directly to the Inquisition for question, and they have never been known to be ones for subtlety.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The news had now reached Medrengard, and the ears of Lord Tolkar, the battle had turned from a near victory to a major defeat, the arrival of the Sons of Drachus chapter had turned the tide in the favour of the Imperium.

Still, he cared not for the third or fourth Companies loss, it mattered only to him that his own men had returned successful, and the artefact he required would now become the next piece of his plan.

Once again he had pleased not only his gods, but his Primarch. The sacrifice of a few pathetic men of the third and fourth companies had been a price worth paying.

The altar for the Heart of Iron glowed in a strange form of light, at first appearance it glowed black, to a sane man this would be virtually impossible, but in the Eye of Terror, anything can happen. He placed the retrieved device next to the heart; this then was the Voice of Perturabo, the command console constructed by the Primarch himself, only he could activate the device, only he could show the galaxy his wrath.

Time is beginning to run out for the Imperium, unless the Inquisition find the information they seek from the cultists, the time of the Iron Warriors would soon be at hand.
