My Flesh Tearers DC c+c

Bat33.1

Recommended Posts

Hi I've recently started to paint again after a very long break - twenty years plus ;)

So as you can guess I need a bit of guidance and gentle criticism if possible of my current project. I was going to build a SW army but once I read more into the fluff of the BA I was hooked so I decided to sideline the little doggies for now and work on a BA succesor chapter and the Flesh Tearers sounded ideal - mad raving loonies who are all going to die sooner rather than later so I guess it don't matter if I can't game for toffee cos it fits withthe fluff, result!

I posted my DC Rhino elsewhere but here it is again - it's fully magnatized so can run with a dozer blade or be switched to a Razorback

Now here are my fresh of the paint station DC

Any guidance and c+c would be helpful I know there is some debate about FT DC colours but I've gone with the BA colours as the current codex suggests and toned down the glitz with stock assult marine legs and torso's mixed in with some of the new DC boxed set plus Forgeworld axes.

I used Vallejo german grey as the base for my black and washed it with 2-3 coats of badab black to get it suitably dark - I'm not a fan of pure black for figures as I find it harder to get any definition in the figure. Anyway here goes with my first thread...

Very nice models. The painting is clean and neat. They look great, IMHO. :) I might add battle damage to the rhino, but then again maybe not. The unit looks great "as is". Can't wait to see more...

 Wow thanks for the kind comments...

I've been back painting around 6 months now and I'm constantly amazed how far the standard has moved from last time I was seriously into figure painting. One of the big advantages for me now is the online communities like B+C with hints, tips, and step by step guides which has helped me to improve a great deal - along with lots of practice and patience. So I'd like to post my thanks to all the people that take the time to put these guides up online :tu:

The black on the figures is not a pure black more a very dark grey and its not as blue as it appears in some of the pictures but Vallejo german grey does have a slight blue tint to it. I used two washes of badab black on each figure, one wasn't enough but I think more definition could be had by thinning the secong coat, then a very light codex grey drybrush to bring out the edges. I need to experiment with a black ink wash over the german grey to see how that works. The details are painted with more layers and thinned paint building from gore red to a very light and thin blazing orange in selected areas. I find it difficult to be neat enough on figures using the edge highlighting style on power armour and I find it a very, very slow process for me. To improve my technique I bought some of the cheap three part space marines to experiment on with a less precise technique that still give an acceptable finish using more washes and light drybrushing to create the highlights. I'm reasonably happy with the finish of the black on the armour but I'm sure I will pick up more ideas and refine the technique as I go along. As for the pose of the guy with the powerfist he turned out very well but a lot of the credit for the dynamic poses has to go to SamaNagol and his Flesh Tearers blog on here as his posing and modelling was excellent and very inspirational when it came to modelling my own Flesh Tearers.

I'm not sure about battle damage on the Rhino and figures as I find it can start to overpower the clean lines and it gets a bit too fussy for me.So I prefer to stop just at the point where I'm going to add that last little bit of extra scratches and marks. I may go down the route of adding a bit more wear to the FT line units as I build and paint those on the basis that the DC have just had a fresh repaint ready to join Sanguinius but the line units will have seen more regular action. I think it is in Red Fury where it's mentioned that the Flesh Tearers have much more wear and tear on vehicles to the point of looking almost worn out and way less 'bling' on their power armour than BA. As for the shoulder pads they work well, I had been a bit concerned when I spotted some postings saying they were much smaller than the current plastic ones and I was still waiting for mine to be delivered but I don't think there is a noticable difference once they are on the figures.

Nice nice painting, far better than me :P

Only suggestion I'd make is that drybrushing on black sometimes ends up with a grainy texture, or it could be the sealer you are using. Just highlighting armor areas may be the way to go. My DC ended up looking less than ideal, more of a grey-on-black rather than a nice smooth black with highlights.

That and banners are always a good touch.

But yes, the standard over the years has changed so much it is insane. Go back and look at the RT era codexes or issues of white dwarf, and then compare them to now :(
