Mephiston Rising

Greetings brothers and sisters, I stand before you with a somewhat worrying thought for us to ponder and discuss.

In the new Blood Angels Codex it states in Mephiston's profile that "His gene-seed, dormant these many long years , had awakened and wrought further changes, granting exceptional strength and vigour." If the Gene-seed contains the genetic data of the Primarch that changes recruits into space marines by modifying their DNA with the Primarch's own (with the addition of the extra organs, implants, etc), could this mean that Mephiston has taken a step away from being a Space Marine and become one steper closer to Primarch status?

Could the Lord of Death be some sort of... Proto-Primarch?

Your thoughts brothers?

I think he might become a type of Demon since it's stated in the codex he paid a dearly cost while overwhelmed by the Black Rage. Even once he met a Demon who seed his heart(one of them at least) with doubt about his powers. I LOVE Mephy, I would not like he becomes a Demon, but power always comes with a cost, and he might have yet to pay for them fully.

Space marines, and especially space marine librarians have proven to have the mental fortitude to resist and fight chaos within themselves under extreme circumstances.

For someone who has also resisted and fought off the black rage on top of that, something far more potent than the lures and doubt of chaos, to fall to chaos is almost laughable. I don't think Mephiston will go down the demon path, and instead become even more of a fearsome force for the enemies of the Emperor.

i think he is constantly using psi power to augment his body, making him strong and resilient. one indication for that would be his ability to draw so much power from the warp that he can use 3 powers a turn. and maybe the daemon he chatted with has an agenda for him and makes sure his constant use of warp power does not draw undue attention from other warp entities. he is nurturing ol mephy to be HIS vessel at some point, one that can sustain him for a loooong time.

just my thoughts...

It seems to me that there is a lot more evidence of barely controlled daemonic presence than anything to do with the BA primarch.

Firstly, there are these phrases: "something altogether more terrible took its place" and "soul still ill at ease".

Secondly, the BA gene seed is in a pretty sorry state - this is amply shown by the fact that things such as the black rage and red thirst even exist. There is also the fact that several of the BA successor chapters are teetering on the brink of excommunicatus, probably saved only by their distant association from the rest of the imperium.

My theory is that he was simply exposed to the full fury of the Black Rage for too long while trapped under that rubble. Usually those in it's grip are killed in battle, executed shortly after, or sedated for the next battle. This poor guy was trapped in its thrall with nothing else to do for days on end. Willpower or not, at some point his mind snapped like a dry twig and allowed a darker power a foothold on his soul. His stats ratcheted up to almost godlike levels, his psychic powers increased and he developed an entirely new persona. The possession is not complete, but I think it is held in check by a rapidly fraying thread.

He probably does not realize this is what occurred, but by then it will be too late.

Of course there is no hard evidence to any case... just a theory that happens to fit the facts.

Edit: Thanks Rybnick!

weren't james swallows stories laughable? not to mention the late addition of such an 'old' group like the sanguinary guard i also find laughable....so you never know.

I quite like this explanation as it follows pretty well what my initial thoughts about the subject were (although conveyed in a much more eloquent write-up than I am likely capable of).

Lexicanum says

When a Space Marine is overcome by the Black Rage he is reborn in a world of anger, hatred, fury and nothing else. As well as Sanguinius’s memories, the Blood Angel is touched with a small portion of his unearthly power, boosting his strength and vitality to superhuman levels.

If meph survived 7 days of black rage, and most death co dont survive that long, maybe he just got 7 days worth of power?

987000.M41 Mephiston drop kicks the Mechanicum priests for incompetence, fixes the Golden throne, and humps Ka'Bandha into submission.

An'ggrath you mean, Ka'Bhanda is still scared of little red men after what Sanguinus did at the Seige of Terra.... (besides, An'ggrath is more powerful :))

Ka'Bhanda already tried to take on the red lantern marines and the sanguinor took care of him via orbital drop... with Ka'Bhanda as the ordinance. That and last we heard he was heading straight to Baal which is going to be an awkward run in with the Tyranids since they both seem to be going to the same place to grab a snack. Y'know... which is why all of the successor chapters but the Lamentors(too busy watching the latest twilight movie) are on/heading to Baal to defend the home of the Blood Angels.

The Gene seed awakened. The gene seed having come from the Primarch Sanguinius, who in turn was the clone(ish) son of the Emperor. The Black Rage was beaten by letting the Emperor possess Mephiston. Now the power of the Emperor is growing stronger and stronger within the body of Brother Calistarius until the Golden Throne burns out, at which point the Emperor will be reborn in the body of the Blood Angels' chief librarian.

Lol, possessed by the Emperor? Even I as an over enthusiastic BA player and lover of all things Blood Angel think that's a far stretch. Although I will say in theory meph stats don't even justify his stories which are even more rediculous. I mean he didnt use that str 10 force weapon to beat some daemon prince he strangled it to death! In other words left all its limbs free so it could attack him and just strangled, INSANE! Then he pulled apart a carnifex and a hive tyrant and its whole guard all that after surviving single handedly against a tyranid hive fleet tendril! Seriously? This guy is so far beyond beserk! Calgar 'just' beat an Avatar and he is a 4+ invuln eternal warrior. The whole ultra marine first company couldn't stem the nids (Insert Meph here) Granted stats are just stats but Mephys hive tyrand stats dont even compare to his hive tyrant +++++++++ killing spree stories. Hmm after all that, maybe the Emperor is possessing him.
nid are coming... ka'bandha and his buddies are coming... that dude needa die and stay dead... we kicked ur ass already... go home, you lost... all the successor chapters are coming to aid... except for lementers... what the hell are they doing? you found a 'cure' and now you're too busy to help a brother out? even the knights of blood are coming and they are renegade!.... this battle is gonna be EPIC! imagine all the death company running around buck wild... that should be fun... and then everyone else falling to the red thirst and black rage while in battle... this might actually be the end for us(blood angels) all... either that or everyone getting black rage and after they kill everyone they just hang out for a couple days and then realize that this black rage aint soo bad and overcome it like meph... then all blood angels and its successors get stats line like meph... wouldn't that be awesome?

He just had a good day is all. Think about Micheal Jordan averaging 30points per game, but then every now and then having games where scored 40, 50 and even 60+ points. It's called "the zone", and Mephy just happens to visit it quite often.
