Morticon
Thanks for the reports. I think you have a sweet list though I feel SWs would give you trouble. Also I can't help but comment on your combi-pred in your pic. Maybe I have it wrong but it seems like modeling for advantage to raise up the lascannons side sponsons like that. hahaha- nah brother, im not that much of a beardy git. I havent finished modelling it yet. I didnt have the lascannons from the pred (gave them away to a friend years back when us BA didnt use em) and have to use raider lascannons. So, its still being remodelled. It was just left there for representative purposes :tu: SW always give me grief :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210574-road-to-nationals/page/2/#findComment-2512878 Share on other sites

Wildfire
I like that you are using a biker priest. I've been saying for a while that it would be a great way to reposition their bubbles. If I ever get around to playing a game with the new BA 'dex I'll have at least one of these guys with an attack bike squad to send buffs where they're most needed. Morticon
So, even the best laid plans go to waste when dealing with the dreaded 6-sided number generator. I lost the roll for the first turn (rolled a 1). He chose the side he was on, with a little elevated terrain for his long fangs. He boxed his rhinos together, and stuck the wolves behind it. A simple, yet effective set up. http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/8944/img00108201009161943.jpg I counter by deploying like this. http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/7505/img00109201009161947.jpg My plan is to use the terrain to negate most of the fire from his long fangs and lay down some big suppressing fire as he advances and then jump in on the counter. I fully expected him to push through the center. Unfortunately for me, he starts breaking off to the left to engage my baal/Razor/bike contingent (the baal having scouted ahead to get flanking shots. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5996/img00110201009161951.jpg Luckily thanks to positioning, the only shots he gets is one living lightning, which fails to to anything. My first turn. I can now bring the full firepower of my army to bear on him. Mwuahhahahaha B) ;) http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/2429/img00111201009161954.jpg I dont move much, reposition a few things, but hang tight for the most part. The first shooting I roll is for 1 multimelta, 2 plasguns (at 24" range to a rhino). 1, 1, 1. ^_^ Luckily I pass the armour save. Then with the remaining 4 lascannons, 2 autocannon shots, 2 MM, 3 HB and 1 assault cannon I manage to immobilise one rhino. :) In the second turn he edges forward a little bit more, splitting off to try deal with each contingent - his wolves coming closer to mephy and the assaulters http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/1571/img00112201009162005.jpg Mephy fails another 2 psychic blocks (failed the first one) and he gets jaws off and targets two attack bikers (both MM). I do init checks - 5 for both. Lucky that squad was fearless. "lucky". His devs start moving this turn. In my 2nd turn I hold my ground, but send off my biker to try do some damage before he dies (coulda/shoulda played the conserve game with him though). http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/4319/img00113201009162009.jpg I reposition the bikers further along the left flank to try and take some more shots at the incoming wolves. Roll the melta, and 2 plas at 24" again - 1 and 1 for the plasmas. Thats four plasma shots rolled, and 4 ones. Sadly I lose a guy this turn. My luck turns a tiny bit when my baal manages to force a break check on his wolf squad trudging out of the immobed rhino towards me- and they break- not far enough though as he manages to stay on the board by about 1 inch. (if he had rolled 8" or more, he woulda been off). I manage to immobilise another rhino, and stun one and thats about it. Turn3 - horrible luck so far, but maybe no irreversible. http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/5696/img00114201009162022.jpg He dashes his one rhino forward, and unloads, while the broken squad move up again, the rhino squad is packing two melta, so my baal is not looking happy. The devs continue to run, not having a bead on anything yet thanks to the terrain and my movement around it. The immobed rhino sees its occupants jump out and move forward too, while the other rhino's occupants in the middle of the field just zap the lone attack biker that had tried valiantly to kill it. He blows up my baal chop chop. He gets off Jaws again- mephy not interested in blocking, and once again I lose an attack bike and a plasma gunner (5, 5). The squad breaks too. Luckily I stay on the board. Things are now looking dire, I have to now reconsolidate and focus. http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5153/img00115201009162026.jpg I make a strong shift to the left with everything. As much as I think mephy can take the wolves and the uber leader if he doesnt pass his Sang Sword test it wont happen. So, I didnt want to have to make a wings check - that way I would have more chances than one to attempt to cast it. http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/310/img00116201009162028.jpg My small assault squad jumps out of the raz with the intention of shooting the Rhino and doing "something" and then charging the remnants of the melta team. I blow up the rhino, eliminating that plan. But I do manage to take a few guys out thanks to some shooting. In his turn 4, he repositions some things and mephy again fails to block both jaws. His first is aimed at my priest- You guessed it - 5. Priest on bike dies. His second aimed at Mephy - You guessed it - 6. Mephy dies. :( My opponent apologises for my crap luck. Its really really odd. He then charges my RAS squad. (His devs get off one ML volley, but fail to do anything to my smoked rhino). My RAS manages to stay alive, but only to the PW guy - he doesnt break either. In my turn came the surprise move. (Surprise to him anyway). http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/7981/img00117201009162100.jpg My pred turboes up and blocks off the entrance way to my main force, my jumpers also jump over and away from that squad and joni my tacs in engaging the two squads of wolves. My bikes move in to support the last RAS. My shooting takes a decent amount of casualties from the wolves, and then clever movement in charging allows me to engage both squads! I wind up taking out most of his men and taking very little in return. He does manage to survive but has lost most of his men. My bikes do a decent job and help break the other wolf squad too, and the RAS member survives! He chases after them ensuring they stay broken another turn. http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/5029/img00118201009162100.jpg In his turn his cavalry now have to take the long way around. They do make it into combat, but only just, so the wolf lord is way out. His retreating 3 wolves shoot a melta into the face of poor RAS man - he goes to ground - SIX!! Yay. First lucky dice of the game. His other big wolf squad with the other rune priest take care of the pred- wrecking it. His wolves dont deal too much death, and I whittle away at the remaining 2 wolf squads (having previously taken out the Rune Priest. I must say, that at this time Im keeping track of the turns and also round about how much damage I am dealing. Thanks to combat movement, and pile ins, Im still able to avoid combat with the wolf uber lord!!! In my turn (5th) bikers zap off forward to engage the immobed rhino (he immobed on terrain). http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/4853/img00119201009162115.jpg (I forget about the razor in my frantic rush) We fight combat again, and once again I win! I wipe out his one squad, and break the other- the thunderwolves staying put of course. http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/6164/img00120201009162119.jpg Me knowing its bottom of 5th I immediately pick up a dice and roll. TWO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a TWOOOOOOOOOOOOO !! We tally up the KP and I have 6 and he has 5 !! I manage to pull a win from a crazy, crazy unlucky and one sided game! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210574-road-to-nationals/page/2/#findComment-2514324 Share on other sites
Brother-Captain Devlonir
Oh my god! best move EVER with blocking his way through with the Baal! That move made me ;) in it's simple brilliance! Am I saying too much when I claim that causing his wolves the extra movement is what caused him to not get full potential off them when he finally got into combat? Also, great conservative plays at the start.. let the slow Wolves come to you! Demoulius
grats on pulling a win out of that insane game m8, i had a game yesterday where my opponent was on the receiving end of the bad luck and it basicly sucks all the joy out of it for both parties :) won it in the end (rather handsomly) but games can take change turns when the luck of the dice is involved.... Morticon
speaking of the baal, did you ever try the flamstorm cannon out Mort? Not yet matey - or rather, not since the first tourney. It was in my first Regionals tournie list but I took it out because I didnt like the way it played or what it offered. R0N1N
Ron1n - i hear one of the better players up in jozey is rocking a fearsome triple BA vindy/meph list. You ready :D Well, I'd like to think I am, my list is pretty solid and I've had a very good run with it up to now... Triple vindy, heh? well, they're just good for their 1st shot, and that's a big maybe, for they need to see something 1st before they die ;) ... after that he'll have to find another way to try and shoot B) I've played Meph for a while now, and seen his vulnerabilities. I'd like to think that he's not that scary anymore... the metagame up here is pretty crazy, and most marine players that's not running BA have sterngaurd in pods... I've seen a good number of them, and Mepth dies horribly to that. other AP 1&2 shots is plentifull so I would not have Meph as the point of your army's assault... Then again, that's just me. I take each game as I get them and have a strategy around each type of game I need to play, irrespective of the army I face. I fight every battle by these words I read in a book once, said by a crazy Dwarf after slaying 30 Orc's ... "There's no such thing as having the odds against you...Some challenges are just bigger than others, that's all there is to it..." Morticon
Didnt get pics of the templar game as it was just a systematic steamrolling of his list. Morticon
So, Level and I played a 3 objective mission. If memory serves I won the roll off and opted to go second. Now the thing with Level, is that he knows my list well and often deploys into reserve fully when I go first - and usually does quite well with it. So, theres always a big toss up in objective games for first or second (obviously you wanna go second most of the time). My deployment was actually flawed from the start, and Im glad its something I realised now, rather than later. I had positioned my rhino to take the far back objective while the rest of my force dealt with the on-coming hunter spam. The mistake was that I left 255 points worth of bodies at the backline. My raz should have been there proving long range support, while the tacs providing warm bodies in the front. I scouted my baal into a great position, totally covered by the terrain. Anyway, level moved forward and shot what he could where he could. http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9892/img00125201009181136.jpg In my turn, I dashed the baal out to get a nifty side armour shot on the vindy and moved all my units into various other shooting positions with solutions on quite a few targets. http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/1672/img00126201009181136.jpg Sadly, not only did my twin linked assault cannon fail to do anything to AV11, my subsequent shots at the vindy went astray too. I did next to nothing, and the vindy was still good to go that turn. I did manage to take out one typhoon. In his 2nd turn, he moved into position and destroyed my baal with his bikers and blasted the razor and if im not mistaken immobed my razor. http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/5476/img00127201009181149.jpg My remaining biker broke, and then regrouped and superboosted off to a safe spot to use in later game. The rest of my force consolidated forward, bunched up and got ready to make a push. I must say here that this was a turning point tactically. I could either withdraw for a turn and try use my long range bikers and pred to slow down the assault or i could meet him in the middle and keep the central objective fought over while we each claimed another one. Instead of giving away ground I chose the aggressive option. I intended shooting the vindy, then charging the vindy and the rhino with the bikes. However my shooting was a bit too good and the melta nuked the vindy, leaving my bikers and the priest ready to be countered into oblivion. I lost a few more models (including powerfist and attack bike bikers to jaws ^_^ mephy wasnt in the mood to block again). This is what i looked like just before Level moved into his positioned http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/9880/img00128201009181158.jpg And then when he was about to launch his assault. http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/3236/img00129201009181212.jpg The battle was hard fought and I took a lot of casualties, luckily i was able to organise a decent counter with mephy and the 5man ras in my turn and also use my TAC to take out his bikers. I managed to break another squad too, and keep them broken in the next phase. http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9895/img00130201009181246.jpg I tried to protect mephy as much as possible from the incoming fire (ie: cover saves) using my sweeping advance rolls to position the models to give him a save. Sadly it wasnt to be and the rest of his army took out the marines protecting and then mephy. In my turn I moved my rhino to ram his and move my tacs into the fray. http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7237/img00132201009181300.jpg http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/7230/img00133201009181312.jpg It was also at this time (not end of 5th) that i zoomed out my biker to contest the only objective he was claiming. I also managed to kill one of the rhinos contesting mine, and his other rhino was out of 3". After all the crazy damage my force had taken (i had precious little left), if the game ended now, I would win !!!!! ><; Sadly it didnt. At this point I knew I had lost, it was just a matter of seeing how well I could minimise the loss. The rest of the battle was quite hard fought but in the end, he destroyed my last remaining troops and sat fairly comfortably on one objective. http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8093/img00134201009181326.jpg Rune priest cleaned up the last remaining trooper and his hunter squad hung back to take the far objective. 2nd loss to date! Morticon
I played against my buddy Al (apparently he's just joined BnC - so dunno his handle yet) and the BT. Al was responsible for my first and arguably most one sided loss to date with his killer templar list. You can find the report here -> Al kicks my ass. Just as a reminder his list: Marshal- LCs, JP, Orb, Honours, Frag Champ - Accept any Challenge. 9 Initiates - Fist, Melta Rhino - smoke, armour 9 Initiates - Fist, Melta Rhino - smoke, armour 5 Initiates - Las/Plas, 1 Neophyte 5 Initiates - Las/Plas, 1 Neophyte 2 Tornado 2 Tornado Pred - LasSponsons. Sadly, I dont have a full batrep for this. I took two pics and then got so into the game i forgot about it all. It was really fast fast playin. If im not mistaken, initial set up aside, the game lasted about an hour. BA move into position -> http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/9190/img00136201009181451.jpg and start doing damage -> http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/6522/img00137201009181452.jpg As mentioned, i got very fortunate with my rolling and everything worked out how it should. The rhinos were either destroyed or prevented from moving, the pred ws stopped from firing (side armour shots from Baal thanks to the scout move). From that point it was just moving, shooting and counter charging. Vengeance was miiiii~ne !! Morticon
The next game was the 5objective dawn of war mission. It was against an incredible biker list - something im VERY worried about for nationals. It is fielded by the guy that beat me into 2nd place in the Veterans tournament. Master - relic blade, artificer armour, bike 4 Bikes - 2 PG, 1 MM attack bike 4 Bikes - 2 PG, 1 MM attack bike 4 Bikes - 2 MG, 1 MM attack bike 4 Bikes - 2 FL, 1 HB attack bike 3 Vindies - dozers 2 Typhoons 1 Typhoon 1 Typhoon I won the roll off and chose to go 2nd. He deployed 2 units of bikers and his leader . I deployed mephiston - 18" away. Sadly, he knew about his effective charge range, so would soon compensate. Everything of his turbo boosted in their first turn. I set up for my usual Rhino search light trick and set up my bikers, both preds and the Razorback to shoot at his one biker squad. Of all that shooting he passed every single save (about 9 or 10) http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/6436/img00139201009191305.jpg In his next turn he started putting on the hurt, but still moving away from mephiston, so a lot of his biker movement was turbo boosting away rather than shooting. He stunned my baal and killed a MM biker, thats it I think. In my second turn I boosted my rhino forward and then moved my bikers out to tackle the vindy and then if I got a 5 or a 6 on the fleet with mephy I could engage a squad of bikes. Sadly i rolled a two. This was problem stakes now - mephy was surrounded by the bikers meaning hed have to kill them to get rid of my cover, but he had so much AP2 about that if he did, i would have been nailed. I split my priest off to move with my jumpers, something i hardly ever do, and then boosted my bikers off to the right flank- since most of the action was happening on the left. In his 3rd he moved all his guys into position but was a bit cautious n getting too close to my army. This caution would result in him paying dearly. He killed the bikers and took off three wounds of mephy, but sadly he was juuuuust out from 2 rapid fire plasma shots and 2 melta shots - 4 ap2 shots that would have done the damage. Mephy was now free to do some mean work. I disembarked from the rhino too, moved my assaulters out and my bikers ready to shoot. I took out most of the bikers from the HB squad, http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/1713/img00140201009191342.jpg and then managed to engage three different targets. http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/6447/img00141201009191342.jpg My preds and razors kept taking out the speeders. By this time his fate was sealed. I used mephies preferred enemy to reroll misses and make sure i didnt kill too many bikers in my turn. It worked, he tried to auto-break and run away but mephies high init meant I was safe there for another turn. After his bikers were all wiped out, my troopers moved on to the remaining army. My opponent called it in the 5th turn with him being unable to contest more objectives than i was holding. A solid victory !!! 9 played - 2 lost. Morticon
Post Practice Thoughts: Its not likely that I'm gonna get another chance to practice until the tournament, so I am going to have to go in with what I know and what I've learned. I've set myself a few guidelines. 1. Stay together. 2. As meaty as the bikes are in dishing out the death, dont be too anxious to throw away the only priest - hes a key unit. 3. Watch out for deployment in objective games and deploy the TACs forward and the RAZ at the rear- i need the bodies. 4. Be patient and dont be overly aggressive. The armies Im most worried about are the current regional champions IG The most important of which contains: 2 vendettas 2 lasteams mystics 2 Hydras 2 Russes 2 Chimeras 1 Medusa with hull breacher upgrade Marbo lascannons in all the regular squads Master of the fleet. Its really ugly. And then the current (and 2time) national champion with Daemons. His list is said to have changed but he usually plays something like.. 3x6 Fiends 2x5 or 6 plagues 1x10 Daemonettes 1x 8 blood letters 1x3 Nurglings 3 Chariots 4 screamers ? (the flying melta like guys). Then of course theres Level's wolves. Overall it should be good good good. Just hope I can take out those hardcore daemons.
