Knights of Baal project loggery

Greetings Bretheren

So I started this army a few months ago (did BA years ago as my first marine army in late 2nd early 3rd edition (my 1st ever GW moddel was a BA tac marine) and felt the calling return with the new book) but between not being able to decide which units I wanted to use, and then how I wanted to paint them progress has been very slow. But I finally have a nice collection of units I like, and have more or less settled on how to paint everyone in a way that I'm happy with so I figured a log might help keep me on track, and maybe dredge up some more ideas.

I feel I should mention that as I have a very erratic approach to painting moddels and tend to paint whatever takes my fancy at the time, I will generally have a good 10 or so guys at various stages of painting at any given time, and tend to do the final toutches when I've got most or all of the squad at that stage. As such unless explicitly stated otherwize everything on here is still WIP even if it looks more or less done

The army is based around the 4th company BA and is initially going to be JP based (with a juicy bike squad to boot) but I plan to branch out into a armour/dread based list options over time (really want 3 or 4 dreads at some point), I can post my 2 main WIP lists at some point if anyone is interested. As is I'm settled on (and mostly own) the following units for various purpose (very likeley not all in the same lists):

Captain (count as Dante or reclusiarch not shure yet)

1-2 Librarians

3-4 sang preists (mainly JP, possibly one termy & one on a bike)

Ras x10 Flamer, Melta & sgt. fist & infernus

Ras x10 Melta x2 Sgt. Hammer & Hanflamer

10-12 Vanguard (equipment i'm still unshure about but I'm thinking 1 7 man ball buster with lots of shields and one cheap 5 man for hunthing Devs etc.)

8 ish bikes (thinking MM, plasma, melta & fist & bike preist)

10x Tacticals with rhino (plasma & lascannon i think)

6-8 Devs (plasma, missiles and lascannon I think)

10 or so death company with landraider

Vindicator (possibly 2)

Baal pred (can rig it to swap weapons easily)

So then on the the models:

This is my Sanguinary guard as I'm shure you can guess, they are very close to being finished, the gold on the banner bearer needs a couple more stages and I've got about half of the wings to paint, oh and I've only finished one of the Glaives. Hopefully soon I'll be able to post them finished so I'll use a better camera etc.

Next we have the first of my Vanguard vets (I plan to have atleast 10), they were the 1st squad I've use the spray gun on and I'm very pleased with how the red turned out (looks a bit washed out in some pics but thats cause I was using my phone and no light box). I love the mix of Sanguard and Death co. parts too and decide to try and imitate some of the gold "spangleage" in the codex art when painting them. The one that looks nearly finished was done first mostly so I could work out how to do the others and needs a bit more work on the gold and some poxy details with purity seals, but I'm still pretty pleased with how he's turning out.

Once again when they are finished I'll use a decent camera and lightbox etc.

And finnaly I have the first of my Sanguinary preists, a very WIP librarian (the gold is still at the 1st stage so it looks a bit rubbish at the mo), and Captain Castigon himself:

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/015.jpg?t=1284640703

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/016.jpg?t=1284640703

The captain needs a little more greenstuff work on the cloak (Its from a chaos termie lord so I've tried to make it look a bit less "tatty"), but is mostly done, I just cant decide wether to paint him in gold armour like the sanguard or red with lots of gold trim like the vanguard (leaning towards red ATM). Very tempted to count him as Dante rules wize, tho I may just count him as a Reclusiarch so I will get more use out of him (normal captain stats just dont seem fitting for that model, and he is "Lord Adjudicator").

Thanks for the positive comments guy's I'll try to keep the progress steady ;)

Great work! :)

Quick question: Where did you get the head with the tear for your lord adjudicator?

Keep it up!

Its just one of the deathmask heads from the Sanguard box with the halo trimmed off (its the one with lots of "spokes" as I figured it'd be easiest to cut). Then I greenstuffed the hair on, I start with lots of little "sausages" so it looks like dreadlocks and then work them out with a suitable tool (I used the blade of a hobby knife) making lots of little indents flowing in roughly the same direction. Its easier to do than you'd think but like most things involving green stuff it wont really make sense untill you do it.

Nice models here mate! It's nice to see another 4th Company player around :cuss one question... How'd you do your gold?? It's nice :P

Forgefather

Thank you nice to see the 4th is strong with you too... (see what I did there  )

As for the gold; after alot of experimenting with some pleasing but ultimateley unsatisfactory results I finnaly hit on this recipie. You certainly wouldent need to follow every step here to get something very simmilar, so please edit to taste.

Stage 1: (Idealy starting with a white undercoat) paint the moddel up with straight shining gold (or just paint a solid line of shining gold if you are just doing trim like on the vanguard). This will take 2 or 3 layers to get a good even coat pretty much no matter what you do so you will actually be making your life easier using thinner layers, the white undercoat makes this easier too I find, as it is alot clearer where the colour isent solid. Plus the white undercoat helps keep the gold bright which will help to stop it dulling out too much over the next few stages.

Stage 1.5: I do a halfarsed version of stage 3 here, but its probbably a bit unecessary as it will get covered over by several layers.

Stage 2: Apply a nice even coat of ogryn flesh over all the gold areas trying to avoid patchyness on the large bits like shoulderpads or chestplates. This will leave the moddel looking almost bronze and will begin to shade the rescesses for you. If you are just doing banding/trim like with the vanguard then dont worry so much about getting it to settle in the rescesses (as you may not have any so to speak) so treat it more like a staining agent (and endeavor not to go over your lines). Blotches arnt too bad either as most of the surface will be covered with edge highlight.

Stage 3: Apply burnished gold to the raised surfaces like shoulderpads, legs etc. but try to imagine how the light would catch the moddel and avoid the areas that would be in shaddow e.g. the inside of a leg will often be in shaddow so leave this as it is in stage 1, wheras the outside of a leg will probbably want to have a nice strip running up its length. I do this using a slightly wet (with paint) drybrush, and "work it in" so to speak kindof like if you were polishing shoes with a brush (gently!) so you can build up the colour gradually and leave a bit of a gradient. This layer is mostly to add a bit of colour graduation to your "basecoat" so dont worry if you arnt that neat about it (its also good practice for later stages when you do want to be a bit neater. Think about it like you are doing a deliberateley bad job of drybrushing, the strange way some metalic paints separate (especially burnished gold) actually helps here (tho it does also make it a bit pain to drybrush properly with).

Stage 4: Add some Mithrill silver edge highlights to the edges where you want the final edge highlight to look brightest.

Stage 5: Apply a nice even coat of devlan mud in the same manner as stage 2. Try to take even more care than before as this layer will show up blotches on the finished moddel quite strongly. (for reference my banner bearer is currently at this stage)

Stage 6: Do a propper drybrush with burnished gold taking the same consideration about light shaddow etc. as stages 1.5 and 3. The previous aplications of burnished gold should make this both easier and quicker to do, and I think add a little more depth to the final colour.

Stage 7: (If you are a very neat drybrusher you may not need to bother with this) Drop devlan mud into the rescessed areas such as between the abbs, or the plate details on the legs etc. like you were blacklining (which you esentially are). I find the drybrush often gets into the dark bits if you arnt very carefull (or patient).

Stage 8: Apply an egde/extreme highlight with burnished gold as one normally would. The Mithrill silver should help add a bit of depth to this. Best to do 2 or 3 thin passes as this help you graduate the colour, you only want completeley solid burnished gold on the most prominent parts. Everyones tastes in edge highlights varies but I like mine to cover just about all the raised edges, I just make them brighter on the most raised parts.

Anyway I think I've got all that in the right order, and hope that might be of some use to someone. I may have some pics floating around at home of the 1st few stages but I'm stuck at work at the moment so I will have to look later.

Still wanna know what colour you used...

Sorry dude missed that one.

Its just plain old blood red with a baal red wash (2 coats) and blazing orange highlights. The blood red was applied with a GW spraygun in 2 relativeley thin layers, and then I did the wash by hand this time but will have to try doing the wash with the spraygun at some point, shoud allow me to plough through the regular assault marines when I start them properly, I'll try and get some pics at various stages as I do them to make it a bit clearer :) . I want to use alot of death company parts on them so I need to pick up a couple of boxes at somepoint before I really start.

Still working on finishing the Sanguard at the mo so here's some almost finished terminators I did a while ago.

Thanks a lot man for the response.

Funny though, I realize it was your camera that made it look like you're used an entirely different method of Red, hence the Red Dragon question earlier. You've given me a good idea though, I've been assembling my VGV's for months now (God they look sweet) and was flirting with the idea of giving them a more antique looking armour paint-job. But I am still tossing up between going for the vintage look or just making them as bright as possible. I think both ideas go well with the fluff but am a little hesitant to pull the trigger. Guess I'm going to have to do some experimenting on some spare assault marine's first so I don't ruin my 40k version of the Sistine Chapel.

So I painted a tactical marine as a test today (trying to paint basic guy's relatively quickly). Probbably about 1 evenings work tho I split it over 2 days. Still needs his base doing and a chapter symbol but otherwie pretty much done. More to come...

Great use of the DC bits without overdoing it! It looks awesome! Not just a red painted DC member, but a true Blood Angel who added craftmanship to his personal armor.

I've been building my tactical marines the same and I am not convinced that using gold on the DC shoulder pad details will indeed not look overdone, but will look just right! Thanks for showing this.

I had the same dilemma when I was deciding how to paint him till I thought sod it I'll never know for shure till I've done it. Was worried he might come out looking too much like a vet with the gold but the end result pleased me. (just means I have to put lots of gold on the vets which I'm doing anyway).

Once again very nice, BUT the gun barrel needs drilling

Yes it does, and I do have the drill floating around somewhere I just havent gotten round to it yet. I will most likeley drill barrels all together when I do their bases, tho naturally Its better to have done this when I first put them together (touch of black paint inside the barrel isent hard to add afterwards tho).

  • 3 weeks later...

ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!........................So after a month or so's hard research I have concluded that Civilisation 5 is really really really bad for productivity.

Anyway whilst slow there has still been progress and now my internet is working again I shall share (One of my friends managed somehow to break the phone cable outside our house bringing the bins in!!!)

I had a bit of a change in heart with the captain and I now think I'm just going to call him Dante and then make a new Captain Castigon based on seth as my army is fast becomming two different lists. One all with JP's (and maybe a bike squad) lead by Dante with alot of elite units. The other is tactical/rhino assault squad based with lots of vehicle support like preds thats going to be based around the 4th company line units.

So heres Dante stage by stage to wherehe is now:

Straight Shining gold onto white

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/137.jpg?t=1286983815

Ogryn flesh wash and mythrill silver highlight

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/138.jpg?t=1286983857

Devlan Mud wash

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/139.jpg?t=1286983889

Crap pic here as the light was fading badly, but this is after a burnished gold drybrush (his cape also got a coat of blood red)

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/140.jpg?t=1286983941

And here he is as he is now with the wing bits primed with adeptus battlegrey ready to be painted up:

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/141.jpg?t=1286983987

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/chairman_woo/Blood%20angels%204th/HQ/143.jpg?t=1286984045

As you can see I went for Gold in the end, he ended up looking a little Spartan Hoplite which I like. And I have changed out the mace/maul for a axe head now I'm calling him Dante himself, kindof think it looks better anyway now its on there.

In other news I picked up my very own Mr. Mephistophelese Lord of Cheese moddel yesterday... comming along nicely
