Realm of Ultramar: Culture, Society and Politics

Gather round, you Lexicania, Codiciers and Epistolaries, for another Librarium of Macragge Research Project. Take off those psychic hoods and put on your thinking caps. In this thread we will document the astronomy and geography of the Realm of Ultramar.

We will work together to compile every unique reference to the culture, society and politics of Ultramar from every source available. This top post will be where I will compile everything into relevent categories. Each entry should contain the following:

1. An exact quotation from an official GW source. Put quotes around it so we know what's "canon."

2. Cite your source. This is important. Historical research requires verifiable sources. Any official Warhammer 40,000 material is fair game, even licensed stuff. Some discrepancies will inevitably appear, but that's part of the fun! Be sure to provide a copyright date if the edition could be in doubt and a page number, if applicable. Also, specify which country your White Dwarf is from, if it post-dates the UK/US White Dwarf split (WD 192?).

Anything about the culture, society or politics of Ultramar and its constituent worlds is of interest. What are Ultramar's relations with the Imperium at large like? How are the planets individually governed, and how is the Empire of Ultramar governed as a collective? How are the societies organized with regard to class, trade, educational practices and socioeconomic factors? What notable artists, architecture, and books come from the worlds of Ultramar? All these questions and more are fair game for this project, which will basically answer the question: where do the Ultramarines come from?

We can use the same color-coding from the Timeline thread to keep track of the different eras of 40K:

1st Edition (October 1987-October 1993)

2nd Edition (October 1993-October 1998)

3rd Edition (October 1998-August 2004)

4th Edition (August 2004-July 2008)

5th Edition (July 2008-present)

Unknown / Other (Further research required)

As usual, I'll "prime the pump" with the first entry, something Captain Idaho mentioned regarding tapestries and threadwork over in the Astronomy and Geography thread that gave me the kick in the pants to start this. I'll add sub-categories as needed as the data starts rolling in.

Realm of Ultramar: Culture, Society and Politics

When describing the opulence of a particular audience Chamber it is described it having a gallery of ornaments and treasures from all over the Ultima Segentum, specifying that there were tapestries and threadwork from Ultramar. (Nemesis, p. 181)

Thought for the day: Hard work conquers everything.

Hmm... for a Politics section:

We should find quotes for Sicarius as Grand Duke Of Talassar.

The quote saying that every Ultramarines Sergeant is a Senator.

Quotes about Calgar as Lord Macragge.

Agemman as Regent Of Ultramar.

Konor and the other guy as the two Battle Kings.

Guilliman as sole Battle King Of Macragge, and as Primarch.

Relations with other Imperial organizations.

"On a few worlds, the Space Marines form a ruling class that administers the society directly; such is the case with the Ultramarines Chapter, which maintains an entire region of space called Ultramar." (Deathwatch Core Rulebook, p. 294)
