just thought i'd offer you another view point, i understand your point of view, but try to address the points that could come up in judgement of models etc etc.

in terms of the speeder the black bumber is definitley better.. it makes it look more complete and a little less toyish.

im unsure on the white cupola as i think this does the opposite to the bumper on the speeder, i agree that maybe more white is needed.. but not necessarily there.. perhaps the bit underneath the turret? (where the doors would normally be)

Thanks for the criticism, really. That is, after all, why anyone starts a project log right? I'm sort of half and half on the cupola. It definitely breaks the white up a little more, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't also have painted the cupola edge/base white too. I'm going to leave it for now, maybe it will grow on me.

Army Update

Right folks, this is it. The big one...

1000 Points Completed!

With the second Predator in place, decals applied to all vehicles that needed them and lovely sunshine coming through my windows, it's finally time for the 1000pt army group shots. I'm immensely proud of this army. It's not going to win any Golden Demon awards for sure, but it represents a huge milestone in my hobby career: my second fully painted army. Big thanks to everyone for their suggestions and critique along the way. For Orar!

I haven't gone through and named the strike force or any of the characters yet, but the tanks have callsigns. Let me introduce you to the army.

I like the white cupola better myself. If you're looking for more white panels have you considered the driver's visor? Or the first indented panel on the sides where you're putting you vehicle(?) number decal?

Overall though? That's a mighty fine looking 1,000 points I must say! The Librarian really does make a great centrepiece in blue and those tanks are delightful. Well done sirrah, well done! ;)

Booya :P

If you could see me, I just walked away then popped my from around the corner to whisper, "Scouts", then disappeared to another thread. :P

Another curious question I forgot to ask earlier: You use Gryphone Sepia then Devlan Mud for the joints on the marines: why this combo? Wouldn't one or the other suffice? Is it like stacking shades to make the final effect darker than either alone?

very impressive! what is your plan for the Shoulder Pad Markings? Brass Etch, Decals or Freehands?

Only point of criticism would be that the librarian lacks a bit of red colour, but that is just my taste I guess

What units are gonna be next?

I think, with the addition of the white cupolas, a good ratio of red:white is present on the model now. I don't want to overdo it. The point was to try and replicate the feel of the still mostly red infantry (white pads, chest decoration and helmets [veterans only]) which I feel I have achieved. If I get around to building a Command or Veteran-transport Rhino however, I think I might do the 'indented panels' in white though. Or invert the hatch colours, eg. red symbol on white hatch doors.

Scouts are for sure on the cards - I just love the miniatures. Whatever my girlfriend bought me for my birthday this weekend though, that's what gets painted next. On the list of suggested boxed sets was Storm Raven, Land Raider, BA Battleforce, SM Battleforce or Terminators. Cross your fingers for the SM Battleforce with it's Scout Squad...

;)

Actually, no Gryphonne Sepia is used on the joints. Did I write that? After priming with red, it goes Baal Red all over. Then Devlan Mud in just the joints, to make them darker than the rest. You're right about that part, stacking shades, but there's no Sepia.

I've attempted Brass Etch several times, but bending the tiny little symbol around the shoulder pad is a real pain. Same with decals, it's difficult getting them to sit right and besides, I'd have to print out my own custom sheet because there are no red Omega symbols anywhere.

So it will probably be freehand. Or custom sculpt and cast some icons.

Amazing job so far, but definately not finished. I need to see a whole sea of Omegas before Orar will accept these as his Sons! ;)

Edit: See. Sea. Meh!

Yeah yeah, I hear you. My free hand/sculpting abilities definitely aren't up to scratch yet though, so I'm putting it off until I have the confidence to tackle them.

Sons of Orar was going to be my loyalist project until I saw your thread. Great army, awesome job, and all that noise. I'm content not building any now, you did them a fantastic justice.

I know what you mean. It seems every time I plan out an army project, I stumble upon a cool blog of someone doing the same thing and it makes me want to come up with something else. But if you want to do Sons of Orar, you should go for it - I'd love to see how your own interpretation differs from mine.

Congrats on the army completion! A fine 1000pt force it is. Going to play it or display it?

Thanks! Definitely going to play. I've been living in the middle of nowhere (France) miles from any gaming stores for 7 months now and I'm itching for a game. Luckily I move back home to the UK next month where there are plenty. And this time, I'm equipped with a painted army

may I suggest this tutorial here for creating custom decals:

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2007/07/tut...cal-sheets.html

it takes a bit of an initial investment but it is soooooooooo worth it! i created all the decals for my marines malevolent and you will not run out of paper easily.

microsol and microset are the best investments for 2,50 each and will last you forever.

always apply clear varnish before you apply the decals and apply dullcoat once everything is dry! works wonders

hopefully this helps! professional decals would just match the incredible standard of this army!

/edit: making the tabbard/loincloth thing RED for the librarian would make the model perfectly tied to the rest of the force =)

can't wait for more! great log!

on the omega issue.. have you considered making a stencil? would make your life easier and still have that freehand look about it.

Yeah, I was considering doing this until...

Fighting Pirahna will do their Omega decals in red...that ought to solve that problem without DIY decals, eh?

Blimey, excellent find SCC. I just placed an order for four sheets

@Tagsta, @Rognvaldr; I think I'm going to leave the Librarian as he is. He's got the white helmet and shoulder pad of the Sons of Orar, he's got the Orar symbol on it, that is enough. I don't want to ruin the clean paintjob and limited palette by trying to shoehorn more red on to him. Thanks for the suggestion though, many people have mentioned it too, but it's just a personal preference at this point -- I like my Librarian to stand out from the rest of the army.

This is one of the most amazing armies I have ever seen. No joke. Your work is inspirational and quite frankly, its the reason why I stated my WIP thread. If your interested this is the link: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...p;#entry2703455. I won't be copying you exactly, so don't worry.

Edit: I figured out how to put a link in my signature, so you could click there aswell!

So it was my birthday this weekend and my girlfriend woke me up waving this at my face.

I've spent some time today playing around with all the bits and decided to start with a Scout Squad, since I have a few Sniper Scouts laying around which I wanted to butcher, along with a Land Speeder Storm and crew I can steal pieces from. Pictures tomorrow.

Race Bannon, this one is for you, dawg!

Scouts Update

I was pretty determined to give my Scouts camo cloaks because I really wanted to have a go at some desert camouflage to practice my freehand with. However, I didn't want to field Sniper scouts and besides, the Battleforce only came with non-cloak bodies. The solution was to use a mix of pieces from my bits box as well as attempt to cast or sculpt my own cloaks.

First, I made a press mold of a Sniper Scout cloak with Milliput.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5108/5570549433_9ff01d7854_z.jpg

Then I added Green Stuff. After the casting fairy had worked her magic, I got some sculpting tools out added a few creases on the inside. Here's the result.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5226/5570550969_c332632a17_z.jpg

It needs trimming around the edges and the folds need tidying up a little, but I think it's a pretty good result.

Here's one I did earlier, for testing camo techniques on. I'd love to get your opinion on it. Don't think it came out too well, a bit muddled and blotchy. If anyone has links to some camo tutorials that would be helpful, but I'll keep trying.
