I'm just about finished with the first 4 books and I have read A Thousand Sons and there are some books I have heard are not fun to read. So fare i have Battle for the Abyss, and both of the Dark Angel books. so what else is bad? I dont want some one telling me about a book that is like by some and not liked by others i mean books that are a universal "Stay away from this book" book

I doubt you'll find many of those in the HH series - even the ones you mention have people that liked them (me, for instance).

its all about personal taste..

battle for the abyss is not great but non the less a nice book to read, because the world eater and the thousand son are well written.

and it leads to a upcoming event in de horus heresy, so a little back ground before the sequel will hit the ??bookshelf??.

the dark angel books are a bit the same, i enjoyed fallen angels and i will enjoy the third dark angel book. ( if the continue the same upgoing quality.)

my $ 0,05.-

my advice read it all :cuss

I actually enjoyed Battle of Abyss too, especially for the descriptions of loyalist World eaters and the Thousand Son. I was not doubting any moment that the ending will be as it was -

all good guys will die at the end in one way or another - even the Space wolf

- but the way the author brough us to this imminent ending was enjoyable.

I still haven't finished Battle for the Abyss, I just can't get into it. I'm currently having the same problem with Mechanicum. The Dark Angels books were interesting, but some moments were very odd. I don't like the idea of many of the knights of the Order being mere teens or even pre-teens as seems to be suggested in the book. It was a cheap way to cop out the possibility of Luther becoming a full marine. However, the questionable loyalty of Johnson is a very interesting thing indeed! :cuss

Oh yeah - I concur that Mechanicum was kind of boring. At the same time, Legion was an excellent piece to read.

You can get away without reading Nemesis, Battle for the Abyss, Mechanicum and the short story collection without upsetting the apple cart, so to speak, as they are interesting filler.

Horus Rising, False Gods, Legion, Fulgrim, the Dark Angel books, Flight of the Eisenstein, A Thousand Sons and Galaxy in Flames are must reads though, even if some are better than others, as they detail what the various legions were like before/up to the start of the Heresy.

You could probably get away without reading the 1st Dark Angel book (Descent?) in terms of Heresy events, but it is a nice introduction to the Dark Angels.

FWIW, Legion is my favourite book, Abyss is the least, but my favourite story is the Last Church.

Zahariel and friends were about 14 Caliban years, not Terran years. They were built like 18-20 year olds.

I would suggest that you read 'em all.... :D

I got in to 40K at the end of the era of the second edition.... just before third edition came out. There was a famine for background fluff. Very few of the old novels, rule books etc were availabe as preparations came about for the third edition and the new plastic figures. I managed to get the old RTB rule book and a alot of the second ed books on abay and greta soul sent me the old novels Inquisitor/chaos child/Harlequin, , Deathwing and spacemarine for free!

So coming from that background I love each and every bit of background fluff, aprticularly about te heresy...

Every book in the series is good or great as far as I am concerned. Some have been maligned more than others by hobbyists. But even the worst one, or one that has little connection with the legions (like Nemesis) will have sections where legends of old are seen, and act..such as Rogal Dorn in Nemesis...

It really is fantastic to see the old warriors of legend come to life with their own foibles and in general the way the heresy is unfolding absolutely great... Loving every book and e-book. My only gripe is that I am a book lover and would have loved to have the e-books also in print!

I've read them all. I've enjoyed them all.

There are some weaker ones, but they're still good.

So I'd say: Read them all!

+1 to this!

Do what you would do with any other book - if you are 50 - 100 pages in and you aren't enjoying it, throw it on the pile and move on to the next one :HQ:

I will also add to read them all.Abyss is the weakest but i still enjoyed it and agree the world eaters and thousand sons were done well.I will also second valk's assessment the last church is one of the best short stories i've read in 40k lore. After deshea is equal but im baised on that one so i should be ignored on that score :woot:

Definitely read them all. Yes the DA books are considered (even by me) to be not as good as the rest but thats maybe because they were the first books in the HH series to delve into something other than what happened during the Heresy, if i remember correctly.

People werent prepared to go from the battles at istvan and everything that mattered to how the Dark Angels came to be.

I really like DA books. Even the first one. Sure, it's not really about Horus Heresy but Horus Rising it's not about it as well, or most of short stories in Tales of Heresy.

DoA gives pretty nice background to DA legion, Lion, Luther and Caliban. I liked it a lot.

So I'd say: Read them all!

I agree. I've read all of them (currently nemesis) and they were all enjoyable. Some more then others (Galaxy In Flames!!!!#1) some I didn't really get into until the end (Mechanicum).

i have all of them up to thousand sons, because i live in rural australia and can't always get to melbourne for a spree.

I have read all of them but have steered away from legion because I thought it wasn't as "bloody" as the others

fulgrim is my fave followed by galaxy in flames and battle of the abyss

  • 2 weeks later...

I've read everything up to Fallen Angels, and I have to say the one I liked least was Legion.

I'm nearly finished with Fallen Angels and I've actually enjoyed it so far.

It's all a matter of personal taste, really.

Well, sort of. Battle of the Abyss gives a lot of light as to what the Ultramarines and Word Bearers were doing throughout the Heresy. It also showed that the Word Bearers were not utter morons when it came to trying to wipe out an entire legion as they had looked to be in the collected visions books.

Nemesis has also hinted certain things about the loyalties of the some loyalist characters but besides that I can agree it's a 'side story' more than anything else.

the word bearers dont come of as bright or competent in the battle for the abyss either...all they were missing were a cat to stroke or mustache to twirl for full blown villiany...

I read them all because I just couldn't bear to miss something. But I really regretted paying money on the first Dark Angel book. It bored me terribly and I just couldn't care less about Johnson's past. If it was more "dicier" like Johnson having contact with Chaos etc it would have been interesting but as it stands I felt I wasn't even reading a 40K novel for the first half of the book.
Some books will inevitably be worse than others in varying degrees but I would highly recommend you read them all(don't have to buy, rent from a library or off a friend) so you know everything that happens and know the bigger picture etc etc.
