the only thing about sanguard is im a bit worried about their frailty. Not sure if its worth investing 400 points in a units which have no invul .Thats why i like the Vanguard.

then you are not using them right, sg are a perfectly capable finishing unit, sg are not a blunt instrument, they are a dagger, made to be used with precision, if used correctly they are quite formidabe, I see 10 models with 2+ save and all having powers weapons as being much better than 1 model.....think about what that means.

Rather go with full equiped 5 man Vanguard.

Think about what you will usually face.

I would send my Vanguard against Thunderwolf Cavalry and Terminators(usually, small units). But I definitily would not send the Sanguinary Guard against it. Too many Power Weapons, and Sanguinary Guard doens't have enough strenght to kill, lets say, a Terminator unit in one round of combat.

Seriously, think about what you will face. If you are fighting lots of Power Weapons users, don't even grab Sanguinary Guard. Mech? Give them some Infernus Pistols and Power Fist. Imperial Guard Mech with Executioner? I would be VERY CAREFUL. VERY.

Super Units in my opinion either are, absolutely hard to kill(like Terminators), incredibly killers(like Chaplain+ Death Company), or excellent at both but not the best(Vanguard well equipped).

I was talking with some of the lads in my LGS about this and i have decided to drop astaroth and go with 2 5 man Vanguard squads with 4ss each and a fist and 2 claws each. I would absolutely send these guys against anyone but not the sanguard seeing as they would be cut down.

List from army list section: ( New One)

Librarian w/ Jump Pack, Shield + Lance

Honour Guard w/ Jump Packs, 3 Plasma Guns

Assault Squad w/ 2 Melta's, Fist

Assault Squad w/ 2 Melta's, Fist

Assault Squad w/ 2 Melta's, Fist

Sanguinary Priests (2), Jump Packs

Vanguard (5) w/ Jump Packs, 4 Storm Shields, Fist, Claw, Claw

Vanguard (5) w/ Jump Packs, 4 Storm Shields, Fist, Claw

Use a unit of ten Vanguard with the same weapons loadout. The points cost is the same. The benefits gained are quite tangible.

I'm not too sure why but a lot of people seem to think taking separate 5 strong units saves you points somewhere? Not saying this is you necessarily as it's been said here elsewhere and it may be reasoning from the lads at the LGS too.

It's a forced 15 point spend for the Sergeant's power weapon/discounted special weapon when you buy the unit. You don't get a freebie.

I'd also drop 3-4 storm shields and add more PWs. So, if together, you can still have 4-5 SS but apart, you can make a solid half and a suicide but more killy half to squeeze more juice out of the turn one HIs.

And just to remind the OP, as mezkh infers, combat squadding happens after the reserve roll. So, unless you're going to be deploying 5 VV on the table instead of placing them in reserve, there's little to no point in having 2 x 5.
