wish i could do models at work, used to be able to, when my boss was incompetent, new boss means rules are enforeced though :-(

Brother Argos, where did you get your clay shapers from... having a nightmare finding any in newcastle, ive been in model shops and art/craft shops and the local 'everything you could ever need for Uni' shops... nowhere has any (plenty beer though, so not all bad :) )

I would like to point out that I do my modelling/painting at lunchtime ... Not when I am supposed to be working

In answer to CJJ's question, I treat my tools with respect and apart from accidents my tools don't break or wear out.

@ Brother Caedrius : My Steel Legion was such a painful process ... some of my best work, but I bit off way more than I could chew and it put me off painting/modelling for a couple of years. I do still occasionally use the Pro-create stuff for specific tasks.

It took me several hours to plow through, but...was some of the most inspiring modelling I have seen!

I understand completely how you feel with regards to the project. But you shouldn't let the exasperation and stress get to you.

I have learnt to walk away....

Previously I failed a Dark Angels project...I bought a full battle company + support vehicles and such stuff and tried to paint all. It was just too much! 106 models + tanks, I struggled to commit, I don't think I finished a single model, always finding something to finish off or something new to start.

I felt reminded of an illustration project I undertook and have so far failed to complete. Too much dedication getting in the way of real life.

But enough of getting sidetracked, I just thought you should know that after considering leaving the hobby and selling my previous collection, your blogs have inspired me to start again and to reconsider my approach to the hobby - to limit what i undertake and to complete before I start something else - to not throw away new ideas and inspiration, or give in to temptation, but to log, conserve and explore a wonderfully creative and inspirational hobby.

So thank you for not only supplying us with somewhere to express and explore our love for this hobby, but also for supplying endless sources of inspiration.

I actually would like to see you rediscover your love for the Steel Legion and re-explore it when you have the time and energy.

:P

Thank you .. it could be regarded as a high point for my modelling. It was also the first time I had tried blogging everything I was doing, including ideas, feelings and thoughts . It is always therefore pleasing that people comment about drawing inspiration from my work, as often my feelings and ideas are at the forefront of my blogs.

That must have been painful! ... not a single model?

Wow ... I am honestly flabbergasted. It kind of makes writing this blog worthwhile in some-ways to hear that. Oddly its why I pay for the B&C too .. to encourage and help people to play/paint/talk about this hobby, it feels strange to hear it confirmed ... to be successful in some way. Normally I don't get that kind of feedback.

I do hope you stay in the hobby .. and choose interesting projects and complete them. One thing I did learn recently is its ok when you finish a small project to put it down, keep it safe somewhere and do something different ... BUT keep everything you do and return to it later. Its slower than people who paint complete armies in one go, but it lets you enjoy what your doing and stay in the hobby.

I actually would like to see you rediscover your love for the Steel Legion and re-explore it when you have the time and energy.

As mentioned above ... its all kept safely and stored in a number of boxes, ready for the next time that urge takes me.

Thanks for the feedback ^_^ ... it is appreciated!

In fact, it's probably the same for many people.. We all appreciate the work you and the others do.

It's different for me, as I don't model or paint, but B&C kept me involved in the hobby when I had some personal issues.. So you can feel vindicated on that front, though I can't attribute it to your stellar efforts with paint and tool.

I got another couple of hours on the Missile Launcher figure last night ... so we have pretty pictures today.

He is still work in progress as I need to make the missile launcher white, paint the servo arm, paint the base and finally put the decals on. From the front and back: -

and from the sides: -

I noticed his rear foot had risen by the end of the photo's so he looks a little offset in the picture above, I haven't glued him to the base yet, but obviously will once the base is painted.

For some reason I am resisting painting the missile launcher tube white ... it someone feels more natural in black, however I think I need to do it to make him fit with the rest of the squad.

Clan or Chapter symbol on the tube? It'd add white without having to paint the whole thing white and the iconography offers an obvious link to the rest of the squad...

Litanies? Or as they're IH, Mechanicus formulae of some kind?

Banding would look a bit zebra-crossing in those colours, chevrons maybe? Meh...maybe kill markings or a specialist badge from the RT era? A white skull used to be used to mark multiple kills (5) and yellow stripes for individual kills according to the little red booklet 'Space Marine Painting Guide'. A starburst could be used to indicate vehicle kills too.

Sadly Chris I think I will just need to get on an paint it white ... that reminds I still have to test my new idea for the IH bolters (spray white instead of black as basecoat).

I have my painting and sculpting kit with me today, so I may do some work :)

I often get asked in PM and topics about the magnets I used ... to hopefully make it clear here is an advisory I gave to someone recently.

The 1mm magnets are sufficient to hold a weapon in the hands of a space marine even when upside down. I would need to "flick" the marine to get to fly off.

The 2mm magnets I use in the wrist will hold the weapon and fist on easily and if careful I can lift the figure by the weapon and it stays on. Once again in normal usage a good flick and it will fly off.

For holding large weapons on vehicles I use 3mm magnets and they are strong enough to support the weapon without drooping and to lift the vehicle by the weapon if careful. However I have an extra trick I use to make things even better ... there are different thickness's (depths) of magnet as well as diameters. On things like vehicles where the magnet will be embedded in a fairly chunky depth of vehicle body, I use deeper magnets. The thicker the magnet the stronger the magnet, so in some vehicles I have 2 or 3mm magnets which are up to 8mm deep. They can create crazy strengths of magnetic field which will hold weapons VERY tightly.

Obviously we are working with plastics here ... if using metals you will need to test things yourself!

Its been a weekend for daughters and family, but I did work on the Missile Launcher some more :(

First off I was asked to show the Puppetwar heads on a marine body to show "fit" ... I think they fit pretty well to be honest .. what do you think?

ihsm58.jpg

Moving on to the Missile Launcher, I finished the base off in a night of effort and rusty walls. I tried lots of different techniques with the bullet holes but I think I finally nailed it. You should also notice the tread on the bottom of the space marine boot made from plasticard and the rear of the wall where the impact marks of the bullets on the other side show through.

Obviously there is still more to do ...

  • Servo Arm
  • Rust weathering on the marine
  • Decals on Shoulderpads, Purity Seals and Missile Launcher.
  • Tidy up

I will be doing most if not all of that tonight while I watch Star Wars II with my daughter Amelia (the 10yr old).

ihsm57.jpg

One thing I was thinking of for the next squad will be "making" the room they are in and ensuring all the flooring styles "fit better" rather than just being grouped by the "rusty floor" theme. I think it would also make for a wicked diorama with a squad of marines under fire in a space hulk.

Well, the Missile Marine looks very nice indeed. The rusty wall is really effective, the only suggestion I can make is are the bullet marks supposed to represent an ongoing firefight or a ancient struggle? If it's current, they could perhaps be a little "fresher" - at the moment they are sort of blending into the rust a bit.

The puppetwar head looks quite chunky too, jam packed full of bionics for the aspiring Iron Father!

/OT To be honest... biggest criticism would be the film. Unless of course, you mean the actual second Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back. For there are no others. :Elite:

He took a long while and quite a bit of fiddling, but finally the heavy weapons marine is complete ...

ihsm59.jpg

The rust effects took a while to work out, but in the end a small amount of downward stroke got the feeling I wanted into the rust on the wall, it bugged me for ages, but I had repeated a similar technique to how I had done the flooring and it just felt wrong. All it took was some simple soft brushwork to add a small feeling of downward movement (gravity), the change is hardly noticeable now it feels right.

ihsm60.jpg

It was from the right hand side of the figure I was most worried about balance ... there were a couple of times when the damned marine would just not sit right on the base but in the end it worked!

There is shading on the white tube ... but no amount of coaxing gets decent white shading out of my camera (always an excuse to upgrade), I tried Vallejo's pale wash and it worked nicely, it is specially built for pale colours/white. I just wish I could actually show you!

ihsm62.jpg

You might also notice I have "upped" my photo technique a little ... for ease of production I have setup a mini-studio next to me and have a wifi-card in my camera to send straight to my computer. This means I can leave it all setup and just pop a figure in for its shot! ... More on all this later though ^_^

He took way longer than I wanted and slowed me down a bit, but the result seems worth it to me ... I hope you like him?
