How to paint chipped armor?

I'm looking for something like this:

So is it just basicly painting a dark color and a small lighther color just under the dark color ?

from the looks of it, he started with scorned brown, applying it to all the areas he wanted chipped and then highlighted it with a very light mix of grey and white.

You can also paint the light blob, then partially overpaint with the dark.

Generally I paint armour on light models with chips in charadon granite, and highlight the chip either dramatically to the most pronounced colour for new chips or to a more muted tone for older chips.
