10 beautifully shaded assault marines and no answers so far? we must be spoiled!

another thing regarding the actual minis presented here: it never occurred to me before, but your shading is not always realistic, but often counter-intuitive to how one would think lighting works, e.g. the plasma marine's arm second from the right side. But it works!

Haha, ta man! :D

The truth about shading is that even if you try and shade something as realistically as you can, there will always be at least on angle you hold the marine at which means it makes no sense. I realised that when I did a NMM model years ago, and the experience stayed with me. I was painting the model as if everyone would only ever look at it from the angle I wanted them to. Not always the case though! :D

Now I just paint it as I want to. Seems to be serving well enough! :D

Been ages since I did anything for my Word Bearers, however I wanted to share how cool this book is.

I finally own the Book of Lorgar... kind of...

So I have "finished" this chap. The daemon smoke is clearly a bit rubbish, but honestly I don't like the daemon. I am tempted to cut the daemon out and just have the magical flames. So I have done a fairly perfunctory job on it.

Other than that this mini is amazing. There's nothing wrong with the detail of the daemon, I just don't like it. However the detail on the face is mind blowing. I can't recommend this miniature enough.

Excellent work Tzen, I just discovered this thread. Youve done our legion proud!

Incredible paint work across the board. Ive been searching around- is there an overview to your paint scheme? Ive been looking around your blog and such, cant seem to spot it? Ive been struggling to achieve that red tone with the modern paint line.

Ta chaps, glad you like! :D

The paint scheme is pretty straight forward, I wet blend black up to mephiston red. After that it's just edge highlighting of Evil Sunz Scarlet and Fire dragon bright. I then do a tiny dot highlights of lugganath orange here and there to help it look like it's all shiny. :D

Honestly super simple. Hope it helps :D

I see, thanks for sharing that info. I really must try to master wet blending. Mine I went Black Prime, Red Gore base, xenithal up to Evil Suns Scarlet/orange. Bit bright so Ive been washing down.

Really like the extreme highlights on yours though - it really enforces that infernal look. Have you done a Zardu Layak / Blade Slaves? Nice figs.

(PS Like that old metal dread earlier on this thread - I still have mine too, its a vaunted chapter relic).

Thanks man. I will be honest, the way I paint my Word Bearers changed a LOT from the start to current day. I never found a paint scheme I was totally happy with until a few years ago. :D

Zardu Lyak is on the list of models to paint. I have him and his minions, and I am super keen to paint them. I rushed the Gal Vorbak in my army to get them onto the battle field, thi sis a nice way of fixing that problem without having to go back to them! :D

And the old metal dreads are awesome. It's a shame I don't get to use dreads very much these days. :(

Kor Phaeron is finished, and here is a pic of his good self and Erebus representing! :D

I am not entirely sure I am that keen on their bases, or the scenic base. Nothing wrong with it, just not sure it fits my other Word Bearers.

Here is some pics of Kor Phareon on his own. I love how this guy walks into his suit of terminator armour, and the contrast between the heretical red armour and the loyalist grey is pretty damn sweet.

My own real issue with this model is the face. It looks like he has had a stroke. This may actually be intentional. His creaking body has been pumped full of so many drugs and undergone so many surgeries, that his features represent that. But it doesn't look sinister, it just looks a bit derpy. Other than that, I am pleased with these two. Loads of the detail is difficult to pick out on these models, and I think I managed to get away with it!
