Mephiston WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

As you can see, this is my attempt to make a model that represents just how intimidating I feel that Mephiston should be to my opponents. I have always been less than impressed by the current model and I figured that repurposing Astorath would really give me something that characterizes just how much of a terror Mephiston really is.

First things first: do you keep the pose and swap out the axe with a sword? I decided no. I based this on the fact that the shoulder pads were wrong and that the look I was going for was more intimidation than rage.

This was tricky, and i ended up taking a little of his hair with the shoulder pad.

To get the hood on him, i had to file the back of the head, and then completly file out the Mephiston head. I basically just chopped Meph at the shoulder line and then filed the bejeezus out of it. I also had to flatten it slightly. Although you cant tell from the pic, i blended this all smooth with green stuff.

I have taken the right shoulder and put it on the left with an arm from the DC sprue. I attempted to make the hand look like it was wearing a glove as well. The right shoulder wasn't my first choice, but i was running into issue with other shoulders i tried, so this is what worked.

Guess I could have done a better job on the green stuff on the left arm, going to try to see what i can do with this.

The idea of the pose is that he is just lifting off with the Wings of Sanguinius. The original concept included wings, but i struggled to make them work on this model. i might try to find a different set other than the ones that came with Astorath, as i want them more spread out, like the Sanguinor.

Good lord but this cape was a mighty struggle. I have no idea how people sculpt with this stuff. I had to wait about 2 hours for it to firm up enough that it would retain shape, and then it was huge pain to get it to dry in the shape I wanted. Still, I guess I am happy with it, it looks pretty dynamic and i think it will look ok painted.

You can see the orriginal right shoulder on the left here.

Well that is it for now, I will post again as more progress is made. Thanks!

Now that you mention it, i think you might be right... Sigh, not sure how to easily fix that, will have to think about it, I guess we will have to wait and see if others think it needs fixed or not.

Overall it's quite a nice and rather ambitious conversion, very cool. As for the arms, the plasma arm does look a little off. An easy way to get gloved hands is from a Chaos player as many of their arms have gauntlets on them, which has the cuff on the forearm, which is what I believe you are going for.

Actually the flight stand is just wedged between the cape and his butt. I am not totally sure if that is how i will leave it or not. Might decide to go with a wire holding him instead, but nothing is permanent at this stage. Suggestions?

quick question: Will stripping effect the Green stuff? haven't ever stripped a model with this much green stuff.

Yea, stripping will effect the greenstuff. If it was me I'd take it all back apart, strip it, put it back together and make another GS cape. Depends on how much effort you plan on putting into the paintjob. Myself, I paint more than I play, so appearance is more important to me, but if you don't care all that much, don't worry about it.

Hmmmm... Delima.

If you look at my photo albums, you can see I am decent painter, but I haven't progressed to the point where i will win any awards or anything. I do however enjoy the challenge of painting at the edge of my skill and as such would hate to feel like my model could have been better. That said, that cape was hell. I dont know, i will have to think about it i guess, as i deffinatly think i could do a better job on some aspects.

That looks frightfully similar in concept to my Astorath -> Mephiston conversion! :) Only difference is I used bare fists instead of weapons (supersaiyan!)

Terribly old WIP shot, he's since been finished.

I would recommend re-doing the cape to be more dynamic, instead of flat with a couple ripples. If he's supposed to be hovering/flying forward, the cape makes no sense at all for movement.

Also, figure out a way to have the model hovering instead of using a flying stand. It's inelegant and sticks out like a sore thumb. Perhaps base elements, or even have the cape touching the ground, and running wire through the cape? I used the scrollwork from Astorath (backwards) for mine.

You know, I dig the scrolls on that.

Are those Mephy's standard shoulder pads, DV8?

The right shoulderpad is Astorath's (his left shoulderpad, I just sawed it off and swapped it). The left shoulderpad is a plastic piece from the Sanguinary Guard or Death Company box (they both have it, as far as I'm aware).

WOW, I almost wish I had seen that before I started!

It looks great btw, and has deffinatly given me some ideas. I think that decides it, I will have to start over. I think the idea of adding the cape BEFORE the arms solves some issues about my current model and might make it a bit easier. I dont look forward to resculping though, the first cape was hard enough. Still, fixing the arm and making a better model is what counts, thanks for the inspiration!

Both lovely. Strengthens my conviction that Astorath was originally intended as the new Mephiston Model, as Sanguinor was the new Dante, then late in production they became additional (and unnecessary) new super characters by giving them different weapons. The bone/skull look of chaplains is well established and Mephiston was the only model with flayed body armour, not to mention the space marine with the longest hair. To find these attributes cropping up on a super chaplain model can't be coincidental. I'm therefore very pleased to see conversions, especially ones giving these models their proper weapons. I was actually just considering whether my Mephiston might benefit from a nicer backpack from the DC set.

Hm, pretty possible.

as Sanguinor was the new Dante

I find this much less convincing. Besides being gold, the models have very very little in common. Plus rumors of "X model supposed to have been the new Dante" keep flying around even when they don't make sense — like the entire Sanguinary Guard kit, which sounds practically impossible to me.
