who plays FW rules?

Recommended Posts

hi,

i'm rapidly digesting the 40k rulebook and as a longtime painter who used to play (back in the day) Epic, LOTR, WOTR and Space Hulk, I will be starting 40k. I've been painting FW stuff for years but as I'm turning to gaming I wondered who plays the rules from the various IA books?

I'm starting up a raven guard army and love the deathwind drop pods but if as a newbie will draw too many scowls i'm sure i'll have to keep it in the case. i kinda guess that if its painted up awesome (and as GW shops sell the IA books) then it would be fine to play in a GW store?

Obviously, other than a demo game i haven't taken any models in and played as my weekends are often taken up by my work and 'real life' but I will be taking time to make time this year. The floor is yours guys, let me know what your thoughts are?

GW shops (at least from what I've seen in the UK) are phasing out IA books. However GW stores don't normally mind you using FW stuff... except for specialist games (but they might not like you playing GW specialist games like EPIC either). Personally I play against and use various bit of FW stuff... Normally leave super-heavys and flyers out for normal games and a few FW units (not most) are unbalanced so they tend to get left out most of the time.

Just be sure to explain the rules for whatever you are using as many people fear the unknown and don't like surprises.

youll likely be able to play with FW stuff if you have a few friends that game. most people dont own Fw books or play apoc so some times its kinda hard to find a pick up game with a person that will allow it. mainly because they dont really know what youre using and may think it will give you an unfair advantage. also most Imperial armor books before 6 or 7 i think were made during the previous 2 edition so the rules and points make be a bonus or detriment to you if using them.

From what I've seen, it's generally a mixed bag. My friends are cool with me using a Damocles rhino, but I wouldn't expect it to fly in a game night hosted at a FLGS or a GW store. On an unrelated note, I think it's downright silly that a GW store wouldn't want you playing its specialist games. If they can make a sale off you, then why not? But as for the Forgeworld rules thing, my rule of thumb is that if the house you play in already allows someone a houserule or two, ask about some forgeworld stuff, even show them specifically what you plan to use, and I'm pretty sure it'll pass.

Also, requesting move to the Amicus Aedes forum, since this is a game rules topic, not a PCA topic

Sticking my grumpy old man hat firmly on my head for a moment.....

One of the things that has always hacked me off about GW, is the insistence that they are their rules and their figures and that they can only be played with in their way in their shops. They are not! they are yours! play with them any way you like, paint them any way you want, play with them anywhere you please. The idea that Games Workshop, who allow Forgeworld to make materials for their games would then disallow the use of those materials is utterly daft. :)

Maybe it's because I'm not a competition gamer, but I just don't get the whole play in the shop thing. Find a wargames club near you and join it. You will be able to play what you like when you like and have the added bonus of being exposed to some well written affordable rules and a wealth of modelling and painting expertise. As well as the whole of human history and beyond to pick a choose from for you entertainment. Throw off the shackles of Imperial oppression people and join the cause of freedom! :)

My gaming group (doesn't play in any GW places) does FW stuff as follows:

- In non-apoc games: by prior oppoent concent. If you going to field a unit found outside your codex this gives your oppoent the option to field something to possibly counter it. (If you wanna play with a flyer the oppoent than knows they might wanna field some AA stuff)

- Apoc - its all open provided it makes sense and fits in with the codex your using)
