Maybe I have come late to the party but I have just bought and read IA9 and IA10 and am all excited about building a C:SM army based around everyone's favourite good guys gone bad the Astral Claws.

( also it gives me a reason to use the bolt armed marines I bought before deciding on a BT force - plus if I dig out the IG figures I bought some time ago I could field the Tyrant's Legion - guess my meglomaniac tendencies make me an ideal recruit for the Tyrant of Badab ! :HQ: ).

Wondering if there is anyone else out there playing this most infamous of chapters - if so why not say hi ??

Just bought Lufgt Huron, the SM Master of the Armoury (Legion Centurion), Mordian Iron Guard Sergeant (Auxilia Prefect) and a Catachan Battleforce (to be any Auxilia in 6+ saves) this very weekend.

I'll be working on the IG elements of the Legion until FW release all the Astral Claws bling for me to also be able to play the standard SM Codex (I FW bling all my armies).

I too have just recently bought both books plus Huron and plan to build up a force. I haven't started to paint yet as i was thinking of waiting till Grey Knights come out which should give us some good White dwarf metallic tutorials. Was stuck on whether to make them pre badab war or set during the conflict. So many options plus characters!
I shall certainly be doing some at some point (no Huron tho, I'm a low-level kinda guy) tho I'm still undecided whether to go for Tyrant's Legion or vanilla marine let alone what units to include, although I'm tempted by the idea of a 15 man cohort squad with 3 plasma guns transported in a Crusader or Redeemer so I may go with the former (using Wargames Factory Shock Troopers for the cannon fodder if they are still available). What's everyone's thoughts regarding markings? Currently I'm tempted to go with demi-legion number on the kneepad, with codex squad markings in white with the squad number in the company colour. I ment to reply sooner than this but real life got in the way.

Vodunius - the colour plates in AI9 show Tyrants Legion marines without squad numbers or company colour, with the Tyrants Claw symbol shown on their shoulder pads and leg armour.

The Astral Claws marines display squad symbols - e.g the pointing arrow for tactical squads - and company number displayed on knee or leg armour. No squad numbers , although some wear the Maelstrom Warders symbol in various places - knees, legs etc.

( If you already have IA9 sorry for repeating info you might already know ).

But they are your marines so I would go with the demi-cohort markings - its a good idea.

Another good idea is your 15 marines , 3 plasma gun in a Redeemer - I think I will borrow this if you dont mind and unleasing hell asap ! ^_^

Yeah I've got IA9, but I think the Astral Claws may have been one of the 'pin the tail on the donkey' chapters - the tactical marine has a III on his kneepad and is identified as 3rd company, yet the power armour veteran has a IV on his kneepad and is identified as 1st Company.

I didn't spot that - well I dont think anyone is going to wrong with their version of the squad/company markings.

I'm really into the idea of the tyrants legion and plan one day to build up an army of them. But I plan to do in a way that means I will gather an idependant Space Marine force and a Guard force that can be combined into the tyrants legion. But I'm plannig on doing Grey knights first so it will be a while.

I have started an Astral Claw army. So far i have 5 Assault Marines done, 2 scouts and I am starting in on my first Tactical squad. I have 5 Tacs assembled and my captain (for when i decide not to use Huron, like in lower point games) also put together. I am going to start a thread on it soon...im just lazy with taking pictures.

My final list im hoping to have

Huron

Chaplain with jump pack

5 thunder hammer termies

Dreadnought with drop pod

2 tac squads with drop pods

5 man scout squad with land speeder storm

10 man assault squad

3 landspeeders

7 bikes plus an attack bike

I also have a land raider and predator sitting around but haven't decided if I want to make them Astral Claws or put them in my Sons of Dorn, same goes for my Thunderhawk, only the interior is painted, so at this stage it would be easy for me to switch it.

I have started a Tyrant's Legion force at the moment, I am working through the my first cohort (around 15) marines and my Retaliator squad. I have gone for silver and blue shoulder pads as per IA9 using silver trims and the Tyrant's Claw. I am reserving the gold trims and Astral Claws Heraldry for Officers and veterans units. The only markings additional markings (once batches are done) will be the Maestrom Warders symbol.

I am expecting my first bit of armour today (Medusa Siege Tank) and bits for Arch-Centurion Cornac Commodus.

I've just started an Astral Claws force, it's pre-Badab war era. The fluff about them being a distinguished chapter and being very successful before they fell, really is interesting and makes a strong identity for an army.

Love the FW Huron model, but not too keen on the bare head, so might swap that out when I get him.

Here's how far I've got with my 1st tank. Although I realise it's not exactly the same scheme as the one shown in IA, I think it looks quite good so far for a WIP.

That is a nice looking Land Raider.

I've actually started an Astral Claws army. One day they will form part of the Tyrants legion army I mentioned earlier. The great thing is, the majority of the army is made up from old modles from my collection. All I have to buy is to Rhinos and the bitz to make Vathex.

What ideas have people got for a fluffy (pre Badab War) Astral Claws force?

So far I'm looking at Assault Squads on foot, while they can't take the combat sheilds of the Retaliator squads, they'll make it a bit more fluffy. I'll be starting off with a squad of 10 on foot, charging out of a LR Crusader. Eventually, i'll expand to include a Vanguard squad (on foot but with shields) and I'd love them to be in a Caestus Assault Ram.

What about weapons types? Lots of flamers, few meltas, etc?

I may look into some bikes, keeping with a assault based army is about right I think.

Well incase anybody is interested, here is my force so far. I've only started on the basic colours on the marines today and my painting skills are limited, however it gives a feel of what I'm going for...
