Fire Angels (2nd Company)

after a long time lost in the warp (no internet) i am back! I've recently had a bit of a clean out of stuff and in doing so found that i had enough basic marine stuff to make a full company, after a lot of umming and ahhing i decided on doing a badab chapter that i could use within the books setting and as a current timeline chapter too and for some strange reason i picked the somewhat oddly named considering theres no fire anywhere fire angels.

anyway on to some pictures.

first up we have my current captain, Captain Alexander Bromhardt. lord of noble house bromhardt and master of the pyre..

he uses corien sumatris's rules as i was originally going to do astral claws, and although im proud of how the sculpted cape and his face turned out, the rest of the model really needs to be redone imho.

next up is squad rikart, the 1st of my tactical squads and closest to completion

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/DSC00471.jpg

their loadout is based on the fluff in badab part 1, although the fist should really be a power sword (i just cant go without fists) and the combi flamer is because i didnt have enough fire in the army considering their name.

its at this point however that ive come across a snag in my plans.. and that is that im unsure on how im doing the basic colour of their armour.. atm its simply mithril silver with a liberal few washes of badab black (fitting huh!) im tempted to change this method to have a more "true metallic" style but i want other peoples opinions.. so without further ado we have sergeant rikart vs test model vanguard vet..

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/DSC00478.jpg

the metallic particles on the vanguard vet are a bit sparkly but hes a test model and i dont think i shook my paint well enough.. but you can see enough of what i mean (i hope) so opinions are needed as well as uk sources of decal paper.. im not liking the idea of 20 chapter symbols per squad and a load of free hand gothic 2's all over the shop..

Personally, I like the way you have been painting them. They really have that 'knight in shining armour' thing going for them right now, which is gnarly. These guys are looking great, especially the lenses of the helms...my only note of critisism is that your gun barrels are undrilled, which really makes these guys looked unfinished. Other than that, keep it up brother!

the barrels is due to a broken pin vice and will eventually be sorted.. for now i update with the less partically looking test piece of my fire angels scheme.. the picture kindve kills some of the gradient in the armour.. but then what can you do with one lamp and no filters  everything else will essentially be done in the same was as on squad rikart.. guess it pays to figure out all this silver painting lark before grey knights come along and distract me from whatever im doing at the time (models not codex from what ive seen... matt ward needs to go the way of the squats imho before 40k becomes too stupid to play)

oh and just because..

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/DSC00456.jpg

theres 1 dev squad, 1 assault squad, 2 vindicators and a few arms here and there missing.. but thats what will eventually all be firey and angeltastic.

Your color scheme looks good to me. Even just one coat and a washing looks fantastic. The second scheme has more depth though, did you start with Boltgun and work your way up washing liberally? I don't know how I feel about Matt Ward though, he did a horrible job on Orcs&Gobbos but then does a great job on High Elves then makes Codex SM mediocre then makes Blood Angels a powerhouse. He's just all over the place. I'm cringing when I see rumours of Grey Knights and what hes bastardizing in my favorite chapter.

the more complex painting scheme is mix of chaos black and boltgun through a spraygun, then boltgun, then mithril at higher angles on the model to get the somewhat zenethial lighting thing going.. then a really watered down wash/glaze of chaos black and vallejo smoke.

the other one is just base coat mithril 2 heavy washes of badab and then a few highlights.

my disliking of wards codex's isnt about power, i actually prefer the marine dex to the blood angels one as it feels a bit more sensibly written (apart from the fluff) sure there are things that should change but 40k is apparently now wards new toy and hes gonna play with it till he breaks it.

the bangle dex to me just feels like you HAVE to use certain styles of list or else its subpar.. and as a majorily codex chapter i dont think it paints them that way at all.. its more shiny uber awesome wonderous stuff and maniacs in armour than any of the codex elements.. even the assault marines as troops thing is iffy imho.. rules for making an 8th company should be included to not use tac marines.. but the codex just seems poorly executed to me.. i actually prefered the pdf and the ability to have at least some control over the death co.. rage is a lame rule that means you might as well have sum1 else play those units for you.

seeing as the only mentioned fire angel character thats alive and well is Captain Tarnus Vale, id tend to disagree.. they do use the term praetor for him as well but his title is still captain.

consul master uriens is mentioned within their fluff (1 quote near the top) but he could quite easily be a diplomatic serf to the chapter or something similar there isnt anything to state that the rank of captain is refered to as consul, in fact there is clear evidence against this.. if anything using the term praetor would be acceptable, but this could easily just be an honourific for vale and not a chapter wide thing.

*edited for spelling*

have made up a new version of captain bromhardt, am more pleased with how this one looks overall.. its less a jumble of parts as i had a clear idea how i wanted him to look this time round. so without further ado..

the cloak isnt my best but i thought it was worth showing the back of it anyway as i rarely actually bother.. im considering using kor'sarros rules for him as i liked the furious charge bonus that sumatris gave.. otherwise itll be relic blade and shield, with some kind of minion carrying his shield or potentially tacking it onto his empty hand..

so what do people think? c&c as per usual with my stuff is always appreciated.

Nice to see that someone finally brought new life to the old Fire Angels Chapter! And the fact that you changed white into metal just makes it look better in my eyes! I love marines painted metal! (weird, but I do) The metal looks really good, the red detailing too. And the conversions are brilliant! Good work. That is some army you got there! You wouldn´t by any chance hail from Denmark eh?

due to various reasons i havent posted much in this in a few days, however progress has been made.. ive reworked my army list and have been playing about with a small unit of scouts in a storm.. so far with pretty decent results..

anyway small update, ive been working on some fire angel related terminator goodness..

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/DSC00492.jpg

this is to be the sarge of the squad (will eventually consist of him, 2 other hammer termies and 2 sets of claws) they roll around with mr bromhardt in a redeemer which i will soon be throwing some paint at.. hes still a bit wip sculpt wise.. need to add some rivets, purity seals and do some cleaning up on him before hes ready for any paint..

c&c as per usual is welcomed especially unto the torso and what else can be done with it.

thanks for the nice comments all, im not as confident using plasticard as i am with greenstuff/miliput, but thought id give it a go

where abouts do you think i should put the tubing? the little shield in the middle of his chest is going to have a small fire angels cross on it rather than a crux.

done a bit more building work for the army.. only one more termie to go until the list is fully assembled and then its paint ho!

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/DSC00499.jpg

ive decided to leave the additional armour to just the sarge for now.. mainly because i have tournamenty type things i need to prepare for and getting the army done is kindve a priority over artistic flourishes at this point in time.. (we're leaving them mainly for the templars)

other than the termies ive also made a storm.. converted the various scouts to actually look like my scout squad and did a hack job conversion of a heavy flamer for the gun which has turned out looking pretty nifty..

  • 2 weeks later...

small update.. decided to make a terminator version of bromhardt to ride around in the redeemer (can be seen in the background) will be using the anphelion project (?) rules for him.. ie before he became chapter master man.. apparently its the only way i could find to get a relic blade in termie armour without spending a gajillion points on his chapter master form.

head is being painted separately so that it doesnt get sprayed metallic with the airbrush.

c&c welcome as per usual.. hopefully ill have something a bit more constructive to show tomorrow/later today.

well i added some paint to the angry man, been playing about with some of the vallejo metallics, have to admit i quite like them. especially the silver, its very shiny.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/DSC00515.jpg

so here he is as he stands atm

i'm afraid i dont, its from an old conversion i did for my deathwing army.. its essentially on of the sacred banners done in free hand. it no longer exists anymore =/

:)

That's a pity... well, nice freehand skills (from what I can make out).

Hot damn! I hope you don't mind me using your conversion idea for my Death Spectres Captain. This is exactly how I picture him. :D

That ok?

  • 1 month later...

Yeesh its been a long time since i updated this.. not exactly the huge update that should really be occuring for such a long time left in the dust.

but thats what i get for wanting to improve the standard of the army and finding new ways to strip models.. but now im getting off track.

first up we have my test piece for a higher standard of fire angel, i think im going to do a little more to the girder and add a few clumps of static grass to his base before calling him finished, but overall im much happier with how he looks than before.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/Image009.jpg

then we have the sergeant for his squad.. still all sorts of wip and missing his gun (unsure on combi plasma or melta at this stage) but its the reason hes a little messy on the torso.. but if i show him as well i dont look so lazy.. i hope.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/Image010.jpg

anyway hopefully despite the mediocre quality of the pictures you can appreciate the shiny men. and as per all my wip stuff c&c is more than welcome.
