Night Haunter's Guard

Whisper

Recommended Posts

My wife approved my budget for this project, so I put in an order with thewarstore.com for 5 Sanguinary Guard boxes, 3 Tyranid Gargoyle boxes, and 2 Possessed boxes, in addition to a variety of bits needed for the project.

I also ordered 3 more Night Lords conversion kits from GW, AND I just visited my local game store (which is 45 minutes away) and bought a bunch of paints, and some fresh tools for this project.

My wife is saying that our apartment looks like it's covered in "snow drifts of bits". I've always worked on the floor (been doing it this way for 15 years) and I've claimed this corner of the apartment as my domain for this project. :(

Oh, by the way, the paints I bought were....

Necron Abyss (Base Coat)

Mechrite Red (For Wings)

Blood Red (For Wings)

Skull White (Mostly for the Lightning)

Chaos Black

Ice Blue (For putting behind the lightning)

Regal Blue (probably a heavy drybrush)

Dwarf Bronze (Trim)

Shining Gold (Trim)

Boltgun Metal (Gun barrels and other metal bits)

Bleached Bone (Skulls)

Scorched Earth (Basing Base Coat)

Graveyard Earth (Skull Base Coat and Basing Highlight)

I hope that covers everything I'll need, because I'd hate to have to drive back to the hobby shop for just 1 or 2 paints. >.<

I hope to have a test model painted up in the next couple of days to see if "my vision" will work, or turn out to be a disaster. >.>

about all those bits... :D

Btw how big of an army are you going to have? Cause from your fluff it sounds like the possesed/beserker guys should heavily outnumber the night lord gaurd elites... and yet you seem to be getting the exact opposite. Im not complianing or objecting, frankly I doubt that I will EVER see better night lord conversions. Im just curious

Not a very big fan of the whole 'using sanguine guard bitz for chaos marines'. It always seemed to me that each legion would have its own form of artificer Armour and the roman breast plate was a cool idea unique to the blood angels. I tried it once myself and scrapped the idea because I wanted my Harbringers to have a unique suit that better fitted the 8th legion.

Not a bad start so far, but they still don't scream Night Lord to me. Needs work but you're on the right path.

If I didn't need them for my Nids, Whisper, I'd give you my pots of Midnight Blue just to see these guys done up the classic way. These are awesome. I'll admit I was hesitant when you revealed the first pics, but the batwings on the jump packs completely sold them for me.

@ Astrum Vinco, I actually plan on giving away a bunch of the bits I don't use. I'll probably start doing some weekly contests on my personal blog in a month or two. Maybe I'll do one or two here if it's allowed in the rules (haven't checked yet). At this point, I have 24 shelves filled with sprues in addition to those 2 large boxes on the floor filled with individual bits, most of which were acquired in the years I worked for GW and basically spent every paycheck on stuff I might need someday. I really don't need more. lol.

And in regards to the fluff, I see this being a small elite force of Night Haunter's former personal guards who keep some demonically tainted night lords with them to use as a distraction while they fly in and go for the weak points. They don't like having too many tainted marines around them, so they use them as sparingly as possible.

@ noctus cornix, I understand, not every look will appeal to everyone. In my mind, the sculpted muscles make them look like gargoyles or classic "western" demons. The idea of them being gargoyle-like is partially what drew me to the idea of this project, so the muscles are definitely staying. :)

@ RamrodMC, Yeah, I'm a little concerned that these might turn out a bit more purple than I want, that's one of the reasons why I put together a test model last night to try out the color scheme on. *crosses fingers* If the Necron Abyss/Regal Blue combo doesn't work, I'm gonna have some trouble, because GW doesn't have a lot of other blues that I can use without making them look like Ultramarines. :(

Thank you all very much for the comments and feedback!

I start all my models with Necron abyss followed by regal and enchanted highlights. Necron abyss won't get as dark as you may like but that's what two or three successive layers of badaab black will do nicely, it's what I do.

Looking forward to seeing how these turn out. They have a distinct look that can be pulled off extremely well, or fall into the trap of looking like unfinished BA conversions. As long as you can replace any blood drops, wings, or other imperial signifier with suitably angry chaos, Night Lord-y bits I think you'll be in awesome shape.

I had a gargoyle idea that never came to light you may have motivated me to try out... damnit

This is Bob the Test Model. Bob hates his life.

Bob was put together using some spare bits last night at like 3 in the morning because my dog woke me up and she insisted on running around the apartment looking for something, I have no idea what, for the next hour and a half. Bob here does not have a legal assortment of gear, I just wanted to test filing and painting both a sword and a powerfist. I just slapped an extra blank shoulderpad on him which I decided to paint mostly red just to test out the color balance and see if it’s be too much red on the shoulders or not. I was also too tired to actually care about filing down the purity seals or imperial eagle on his chest, I figured I’d just paint over them and pretend they weren’t there. Bob just exists to test out the paint scheme after all.

For the most part, I like how Bob the Test Model turned out. He’s a touch too bright blue, but that’s because I didn’t find my old bottle of enchanted blue until literally everything else had been painted, even the lightning, so I was trying to highlight around details without hitting anything else on accident, the result is a model that’s probably a little brighter blue than he would be if I’d done the highlighting earlier. *shrugs* Whatever. You’ll notice that there are some spots of messy painting, particularly around his belly, again, I didn’t care since he was just here to test out the overall feel of the paint scheme.

All in all, I think that this color scheme (if a slightly darker blue) will work just fine. What do you guys think?

Edit: I'm not entirely sold on the helm being painted like a skull, I'm not sure if I want to keep that look, or go with Blue helms on the final ones. Hmmm....

After thinking about it, I went ahead and Photoshopped Bob's head in the photo to see what it would look like Blue instead of painted skull-like, and I think I like the blue look better.

What do you think?

The trick with the skull faceplates is to paint a skull on the front plate instead of painting the front plate white. It adds a whole different dynamic to the mini, like so... (not trying to hijack your thread, just showing an example, good sir)

Another thought would be taking skull shaped helms (or cut a skull face off, shave down a SM helm, and glue the skull face to the helm). I mean, these guys were the Haunters guard, they'd have some seriously scary looking helms, I'd think. I really do love what you're doing with these guys, and the idea behind it is awesome, keep rockin' this project, man!

I’ve decided to change my Night Lords army into the Bat Knights of Ultramar!

They’ll be the Elite Assault force of the Ultramarines! My thought is that they’ll be Ultramarines tainted by Chaos, but still allowed to serve beside their Battle Brothers, because they’re just too cool not to keep around!
