Art Scale Terminator

Recommended Posts

I can hear you all saying "Oh look, another WIP thread from Pig of Sparta.... " and it's ok, I know I really do have too many just now, but I wanted to share this with everyone as I'm quite excited about this project.

Inspired by Lamenter's latest projects (check his website master of the forge out if you haven't already, it's fantastic!) with 'art scaling' Space Marine Terminators I couldn't resist giving something like this a try. Now my sculpting-fu is still rather weak, so I took the easy option for part of this and spoke to Lamenter about sculpting me a set of legs, but the rest of this is all me......

So, so far what have I done? Well, I went and bought a Colour Shaper as I've heard and seen very good things about them with regards to sculpting. Then I ordered a Terminator torso to use as an armature for my work. So armed with these materials and some green stuff and plasticard this is what I've achieved so far:

As I said above, my scuplting is still not anything to get excited about, so some (read: most) of the scuplting work needs tidying up once the greenstuff cures, but I really noticed the difference that using a colour shaper makes, the results are so much smoother than a regular sculpting tool. I still need more practice, but that's what projects like this are all about ;).

So what's next? well I need to even up the 'bib' on the chest plate as I noticed it's a bit wonky after taking these photos. Then I need to build the shoulder joints so I can mount arms on the torso. I think I might make the neck guard a little chunkier as well. I'm also debating whether or not to add an additional layer of plating to the chest... suffice to say there is more to come :)

cheers

Thanks for the replies guys....

@ Legio Draconis: I know.... I can't seem to help myself I keep getting all these crazy ideas! ;)

@ Natanael: I can tell you how to do the torso if you like, unfortunately I didn't take any photos prior to the ones I posted last night:

> Clean up you components as normal.

> Cut/file down any decoration on the front of the chest plate.

> Cut/file down the arm mounts until they are level with the small 'panel' on the sides of the torso.

> Glue a small length of plasticard across the chest plate. This is actually tricker than it sounds as the plasticard will try to spring back into it's flat shape even if you curl it arround something first. You'll need to hold it in place. It doesn't need to exactly match the plastic chest plate underneath as you can cut and then file it down smooth once the glue has set.

>Glue small squares onto the sides of the torso. Again these don't need to be exactly shaped as you can trim then file them down as with the chest plate. You want there to be a gap of about 1.5mm-1mm between the plasticard and the torso beneath it. This will be filled in with green stuff.

> Once the glue's all dry, file down all the plasticard so that it's level with the plastic torso underneath it. Then it's time to break out the green stuff and start filling in the gaps.

That's about it for now. This morning I gave all the green stuff on mine a gentle sand down to smooth it off. I also added another couple of plates to the chest:

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Art%20Scale%20Space%20Marine%20Terminator/Torso3.jpghttp://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Art%20Scale%20Space%20Marine%20Terminator/Torso4.jpg

These new plates will be tidyied up once the glues properly dried. I've decided that I am going to bring the 'neck guard' up a little to match the additional bulk of the chest, so that's next....

thanks

James

Thanks, mate. I figured it was something like what you described but it is really good do have it "on paper". As for the use of plasticard I think I'll use GS a lot more, since I am much more comfortable with that. I never get how to cut plasticard in a good and straight manner anyway ;)

No problem... glad to have helped:). My method for cutting plasticard just now mainly consists of measuring by eye and carefully cutting, followed by willing/cursing/manhandling the pieces into place :)

looking good so far.. i will say however, that for gap filling/ hard edges you'd be better off using miliput than green stuff. it has a less rubbery consistency and with a bit of water will work as a gap filler really really well.

otherwise keep up the good work.

@ Lamenter: I've always belived in crediting my inspirations, so I couldn't not have a link to your page :). Thanks for the comments, if it looks good to you then I'm definately on the right track....

The plasticard I'm using is .75mm thick according to the store I bought it from on e-Bay, hope that helps

@ Lorenzen: Thanks:). I've not used milliput in a very very long time, but I'll bear that in mind. This is a one off mini really, but as I hope to keep trying my hand at sculpting I think it'll be worth a try.

Still more details to be added as I'm not 100% who he actually is yet ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've bulked out the waist with a little plasticard but I kinda like the smaller shoulderpads so I'm keeping them.... absolutely nothing to do with the fact that they're glued on to the mini already at all :).

I dont think the waist needed bulking out, I think the entire torso needs to be dropped down a little bit, like say the height of the "skinny waist" show in the previous picture.

Kind of like this. please excuse the crappy quick cut and paste but you get the idea.

Ask and you shall receive:

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Art%20Scale%20Space%20Marine%20Terminator/ScaleShot.jpg

Mystery giant terminator comforts one of Gulliman's finest on his size isses.

I've also added a few more details to him, but I can't help but feel his left leg looks a little bit plain... I'm thinking maybe a brass crux terminatus on the knee pad might balance this a little but any thoughts will be appreciated :(

Cheers
