Non Deathwing ranks

O,K we all know only a select few know the whole truth about the legions/chapters history so my question is what's the highest rank a marine can reach if it's found out that learning the truth would impede him in some way. An example would be a 300 year old tac marine.

IIRC it is the librarians who look into the deepest parts of the prospective Deathwing members soul to see if he can withstand the terrible truth.

So what happens when a marine is weighed measured and found wanting?

He's taken off to chamber 42 to be 'dealt with' :tu: .

Seriously it's a good question. There is obviously a Librarian-enforced glass ceiling on promotion/advancement within the DA. But still there is no dishonour at all in being a 300 year old Tac marine – he's still a member of the First Chapter of Astartes (or the greater Unforgiven) isn't he? It's not like he's some menial loader in an IG Artillery regiment  . And he could make it to be a Veteran anyway.

...and if he honours both himself and his Chapter before becoming seriously maimed he might get made into a Dreadnought. An honour indeed.

Don't forget that not all DA aspire to the Deathwing/Inner Circles anyway. He could advance with the Astartes ranks of the Mechanicum for instance if he's a Techmarine – or similary through the Apothecarium as an Apothecary.

You're forgetting that as soon as a space marine advances into the first company (Deathwing) he is also inducted into the Inner Circle. Librarians, Chaplains and Company Masters are all members of the Deathwing (Which has at least one apothecary by the way) and, as each Dark Angel advances within the Inner Circle they are given more knowledge regarding the chapters secret. Therefore one cannot simply choose "not to advance" in the Deathwing/Inner Circle as it is a matter of eventuality not choice if you are proven worthy of being inducted. I also quote from the last sentence of "The Deathwing" entry in the codex, pg 16 "every Dark Angel aspires to join the Deathwing, to lead the assault against the enemies of The Lion and The Emperor". Also, Techmarines cannot become part of the Inner Circle anyway due to conflicting oaths of service. I think that covers everything.
