Salamanders VS Orks 1750 pts

Hello everyone. This is a recounting of the inital Ork assault in our campaign. It's not a strict round-to-round description, more like a narrative. Apologies in advance for the below average quality of pics, our camera was missing that day and we had to make do with cell phone cams.

Zab's speshul forces made planetfall and were met by Salamanders' 2nd company elements led by Vulcan He'stan. The field of battle was to be the abandoned ruins of Treton IV:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/01-Thefieldisset.jpg

The two forces were quickly found facing each other:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/02-Forcesaredeployed.jpg

The Salamanders had rushed to the area to recover vital intelligence. The Eversor assassin that had information on the incoming invasion had been forced to ditch his car in the area and flee after being outnumbered by the orks. The orks objective was to get entrenched in the city's ruins to secure a foothold on the planet. Thus, capturing the communications array so that they could better direct their forces and disrupt enemy coms was vital to their plans.

The Orks moved forward, as one, trying to cover as much ground as possible:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/03-FirstturnOrkmoves.jpg

The battle-wagon moved at the flank, the boys inside eager to stomp some space marines.Every ork knows that green is best so this had to be a good fight!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/03z-Battlewagonmovesuptheflank.jpg

The Deffkoptas separated themselves from the rest of the ork horde, eager to get stuck in:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/04-Deffkoptaszoomahead.jpg

Their blazing speed caught the foe unaware and the Vindicator went down under a torrent of dakka:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/05-Deffkoptaswreckthevindicator.jpg

The Salamanders responded by blowing them out of the sky:

Salamander elements arrived from the flank to intercept the Battlewagon.Alas, its junk construction made it hard for the shots to find the target and it survived unscathed, the assault squad not sure what to shoot since it didn't look like it was supposed to be able to move anyway:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/07AssaultSquadandpredatormoveuptheflanktointercepttheBattleWagon.jpg

The sergeant moved in to take it apart with his hammer, and succeeded in immobilizing it:

Meanwhile, the ork mob at the center moved to occupy the Apollo theater:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/09-OrksmovetooccupytheApollo.jpg

Warboss Zab arrived with his bikers to support the Ork flank, dust covering their advance:

The Orks at the battlewagon disembarked, mad glee in their eyes as they were the first to get stuck in da good fight:

The Apollo became the ground of a fierce firefight, the orks taking cover at its rooftop:

The Ironclad dreadnought "Ryn" moved to engage the newly arrived bikers:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/12-TheIroncladmovestointerceptthebikerz.jpg

The Ork bikers didn't seem to like the attention they received:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/13-Dontliekdalookodisboss.jpg

Meanwhile on the opposite flank, the assault marines had got assaulted by the Orks. A bloody melee ensued, the Orks fighting with wild ferocity while the Salamanders refused to give ground under the incantations of Chaplain Incis. Chainswords roared and choppas hacked, limbs flew apart as both sides suffered heavy losses.

The buggies moved to take down the predator, one of them crashing into the trench:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/14a-Thebuggiesmovetothepredatoronegetscrashedintothetrench.jpg

The Ork bikers decide that the ironclad will be no fun and move to avoid it:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/15-Betterpartofvalorthebikerzmoveawayfromtheironclad.jpg

While Warboss Zab,renowned for his brutal cunning, zooms ahead on his own, intent to execute a cunningly brutal flank attack.

A salamanders squad awaits the warboss:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/18-Asquadmovestomeetthewarboss.jpg

By this time, the melee has taken its bloody toll on the other side, both sides suffering heavy losses:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/17-Thebloodymeleetakesitstoll.jpg

The cumbersome Ironclad moves to shoot the speeding warboss and the bikers seize the opportunity to return for a backstab attack:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/19-TheIroncladchasesafterthewarbossandthebikerzreturnforacowardlybackstab.jpg

The Grot riggers toiled to repair the battle wagon while the fight was going on and it moved again, crushing a rhino under its Deff Rolla:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/20-Thebattlewagonrepairsitselfandramsarhinowreckingit.jpg

Vulkan decides it is time to act and disembarks to engage the bikers near the objective:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/21-Vulkanandhisguardmoveouttomeetthebikerz.jpg

While the Ork Mob moves to support their faster allies:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/23-Theorkmovemovestosupportthebikers.jpg

Chaplain Incis and the Assault Sergeant emerge victorious through the hellish melee and cut down the last of the Orks:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/24-Thefightisreachingitsconclusion.jpg

And they proceed to clear the array of its grot infestation:

The Warboss hits the Salamanders' flank:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/26-Thewarbosslaunchesitssneakattack.jpg

But after a tiresome melee, he is left gravely wounded facing off against the sergeant:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/27-Afterafiercebattlethewoundedwarbossfacesoffagainstthesergeant.jpg

The grots are quickly dispatched and victory seems within Incis' grasp:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/28-BegoneVermin.jpg

But the Orks on the Apollo return and Chaplain Incis makes his last stand on the array:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/29-Laststandagaisttheorkswhoreturntodefendthearray.jpg

Meanwhile, Vulkan and his squad cleanse and purify the Orks near the center.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v44/GreaterDragon/Battle%20Report%2017-05-2011/30-Vulkanburnstheorksatthecenterandclearsthemup.jpg

Further pict recording is unavailable.

It is rumoured that chaplain Incis is missing, and that the ork loota's sustained firepower loosened the Salamanders' iron grip on their objective.

Result: Victory for the Orks!

Probably some kind of boarding action bat rep. It takes a while to play a game and put the battle report together. :pinch:

Played IA:9 boarding actions against Orks with my Grey Knights.

They are deadly in a close board, with lots of terrain.

My Pallies got charged by Killa Kan and I lost half before I managed to get hammer hand and Might of Titan off.

The boyz also formed a firing line and ripped apart my men. I had to destroy objectives (AV11 with a 4++ at range) and didn;t have the men to fight off Orks and kill objectives.

Boarding Action from IA:9 is great. I am compiling the battle report now.

The format is going to be old style White Dwarf.

@spu00sed

How did you place the sabotage objectives? I couldnt find anything and I ended up placing the objectives before deployment zones were selected. 4 Objectives and 2 of them were inside the Attacker's deployment zone.... Short expectation battle for my Blood Ravens...

The Ork player deployed the objectives before deploying. We had 5 objectives. 4 of them were in or near one table quater. He then won the roll for quarters and took that zone.

I managed my 4+ and deployed in the zone next to them, rather than across. Though this did lead to me deploying 11.5" from his killa kanz.

I found that AV11 objectives were hard to shift at range.

How did your ravens destroy objectives and hold off the enemy for 6 turns?

Actually it was my Death Guard that was attacking and trying to destroy the objectives The objectives were spread all around the table but two were at the same quarter (which i think will not happen again) so when i won roll to play first i placed my army at the quarter which had the two objectives and i destroyed them by turn two (and imagine i was taking my time). After that it was a battle for a draw but thanks to my chaos dreadnought which held the assault terminator squad for almost the whole game and reducing them to one, i had the upper hand and i managed to destroy the third objective and win.

I destroyed and the three objectives by charging them. One with daemon prince, one with chaos terminators and the other with a plague marines squad. Did not try to shoot them much really, i prefered to shoot the ravens.

If your friend had not win the roll for quarters he would have been in serious trouble. That was quite a gamble.

Yeah, next time we will let the defender place the objectives after deployment zones. Having a bunch of objectives next to you and playing first is a tad much for sabotage. I actually lost an objective before I had the chance to move a single model.

All these technicalities aside, it was a great game which really drove our campaign forward storywise.

I 100% recommend Badab War boarding action. Its great fun! (If only the catastrophic damage table actually did something...)
