Here are the four lads I've been working on recently. Also belonging to Tactical Squad Vorolanus, we have the sergeant, flamer, auspex dude and poor headless nick, who's waiting for his funky crested helmet from Chapterhouse to show up.

The Sergeant! I accidentally made the reflective spot in his eyes way too big, but then I decided that I kinda liked the look so I kept it. Pretty happy with how the decals on his banner and loin cloth came out. Currently about 85% finished.

Credit for the banner idea definitely needs to go to roooooot and his awesome ultramarines WIP log. I loved the look of the decals on the banner so much I had to do my own. I still think his looks better but that's okay.

Flamer dude! Again pretty pleased with the decals. I think I have them down now. Currently about 85% finished.

Auspex guy! This shows off how I'm doing my bolters now. I decided that the black wasn't working for me, so I went with the foundation battlegrey as the base colour, and highlighted up to codex grey. I really like the new look.

All of tactical squad Vorolanus! Note the heresy armour guy in the back who's waiting to be undercoated and started.

Finally in this post; talking of heresy armour, here is my assembled vet sergeant who'll be going into my command squad.

Thanks for reading and the comments so far. :)

Aw, thanks for the shoutout! I've been meaning to mention how much I love what you've been posting.

I've been wondering what to use the omega pattern strips on that FW decal sheet on. I swear I have no intention of using one like you did on that sergeant, nonewhatsoever... :o

Awesome, although I quite like big crest helms for my marines (can never seem to get the scale right myself...). But immensley enjoying your blog, very nice work on the paint

It's also good to see someone who agrees with me on the whole black boltgun thing too! I never like to use "pure black" or "pure white" as you can't highlight/lowlight them. My receipe's a bit different though, I use a 1:4 mix of Rotting Flesh/Chaos Black and work my way up. Either method, however, looks miles better in my honest opinion.

I don't know if it's good form or not to blog-whore on this forum, so apologies in advance if it's not!

This post on my blog pretty much covers in exhaustive (and hopefully entertaining) detail on how I do transfers. Probably like other transfer tutorials already out there, but figured I might as well share.

See! New developments! Holy cow!

So I was totally going to have my first tactical squad all finished to show you lovely people, but then a dreadnought arrived and I was forced at gunpoint to paint that instead. Dick move, dreadnought. Dick move.

Interesting story: he arrived from TradeMe (which is NZ's ebay) absolutely reeking of stale marijuana. Wasn't overly impressed with the seller, especially since it also had the worst streaky undercoating I'd ever seen. I was tempted to give it a good dunk, but patience isn't always a strong skill of mine and so I painted him up. I think he's looking okay, but eventually I'm definitely going to detol bathe him and start over. You can't really see from these pics but a lot of the streaking can still be seen under the blue. :tu:

Lesson learned, but I don't regret taking the time to paint him up. I learned some good battle damage methods in the process and I think he looks decent enough in the meantime.

Heresy dude from the tactical squad! One of the two missing guys. The other dude...

New head also for the Company champion. Background posing girl strictly optional.

And there's a new bike. I got him for a birthday present. Guess that means I'm buying some more eventually.

I like... all of it :D

EDIT: Except the sergeant's plasma pistol is raised, which is typically only done when the weapon is being reloaded. It's plasma, so maybe it's different. Just a note for the future... :tu:

Picky much? ^_^

He just shot a Chaos raptor out of the sky. :D

....seriously?

Also awesome work man. The Dread looks good to me, although like you said maybe the streakiness is only visible in person.

Ancient Venetius, Guardian of my mighty stash, awaken!

ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: FIRST TACTICAL SQUAD FINISHED.

I won't flood too many pics since most of the boys from Squad Vorolanus Manorian (after reading the Codex squad names, heh) are already up here. Here are some of the more interesting bits that I haven't shown yet from the squad.

Shoulder detail that I'm reasonably happy with!

I decided it would be cool if the dreadnaught Ultracius was the predecessor of Sergeant Manorian and still watches over Squad II whenever he gets the chance in battle. Crusty old ex sergeant keeping an eye on his protégé type thing.

Yes I'm well aware of the horrible mold lines and will endeavour in future to get the damn things off better! Mentioning them at this stage of the proceedings is an exercise in pointing out the bleeding obvious. -_-

....seriously?

[straightface] I never joke when I'm doing business. [/straightface]

;)

"Sergeant, go attack that titan!"

"Say whaaaaa?"

Also, I think we should make the whole background girl thing not be an option. You know, make it look like we're cool and stuff.

OhgogImsoalone..

Assault smurfs in spaaaaaaaaaaace!

Only five of them though. Some day there will be more. But for now I'm a bit poor. (Heh, that rhymes)

Sergeant dude!

Pretty much finished. I need to tidy up some highlighting (especially on the pistol in the second photo, left hand marine) and add some highlighting that I missed (same pic, right hand marine) and finish up detailing the decor on the Sergeant's shield but they're 95% done.

Nice I really like them. how did you do the typography?

With these! And also like this.

:P

With the 'Ultramar' one around the Sergeant's jump pack exhaust, I simply re-drybrushed a bit of tinbits over the bottom of the transfer once it was all dry and safely sealed.

Really like your lenses, they are outstanding. Not too keen on those Chapter-house heads meself, but other than that, I think these look great!

Concerning the mould-lines, the easiest way is to just drag the knife-blade along the mould-line, with the blade at a 45 degree angle, sharp bit facing away from the direction of movement. It's pretty simple, but it does require a certain amount of diligence in locating and eradicating said mould-lines...

I gotta say I am not a big Ultramarine fan (a little bland in coloring and theme for my taste plus a minor bit of the usual anti UM bias) but your work is relly good and quite entertaining to follow. When I read other blogs is usually just STEP 1 APPLY TRANSFER. not step 1: apply the transfer but should you rip it SOMETHING TERRIBLE [iNSERT HORRIBLE EVENT HERE] WILL HAPPEN. Its quite an entertaining read. Plus those transfer tricks will be so helpful...I cant freehand worth a damn so I will be using a bunch of custom water transfers and was seriously trying to find out how people did it so well...cause as you stated the GW how to is a web of lies.

Cheers mate. I'm quietly proud about my ability to do eyes now. It really just comes down to following the GW technique and doing them first so any mistakes can be easily fixed. Yeah, mold lines are the bane of my existence. I'm blaming the heavy pain medication I was on while putting the first lot of marines together... it's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Haha thanks! It's really encouraging to get feedback on my blog. Nice to know I'm entertaining people as well as being informative™

I really like those CHS pads! Also as a whole I love them, the gritty feel is just what I like, though I think you missed a couple mold lines but its still good.

You know what.... I think you might be right about those mold lines... :)
